There was a time when I did not consider myself the academic type, and probably would not have believed it had I been told then that I would someday be applying to graduate school. In fact my first encounter with college was simply because 'it was the next step' in life and not because I saw any particular value for it for my own life. It wasn't until later that I felt the draw towards higher education again.
My journey towards nursing began when my first child was delivered by a certified nurse midwife and a registered nurse in a birthing center. As a young woman, I knew little about the role of a midwife and merely happened into this clinic by chance. This was a happenstance for which I am most grateful. Never in my experience with healthcare had I felt so respected, heard and truly informed as I had in this setting. I was impressed by the level of skill and knowledge my practitioners exhibited. My ideas on the role of a nurse were challenged. These women were not

Having a goal that was important to me changed everything for me academically. No longer were tests and papers just motions to go through, but steps toward a personal dream. My love of nursing continues to push me to challenge myself both professionally and academically to be the most prepared nurse I can be for my patients.

In today’s healthcare system, nursing is a challenging field as a result of rapid technological advances and changes in healthcare policies. As a dedicated nursing professional, with a great passion for learning, I strive to stay on top of these changes. I am determined to increase my knowledge to be an instrumental part of providing quality healthcare. The demands of nursing are high; however the rewards are even higher. Nursing requires both a supreme understanding of the science of health, and a caring bedside manner befitting only those who seek a position of such a personal involvement in the well-being of a patient. Academically, I will put forth all of
In 2003 during the last semester of nursing school, my life was devastated as my ex-husband was arrested as a serial rapist. This was overbearing and I thought this as being impossible to recover from. A breaking point came as I approached a red light deciding whether to deliberately run my minivan into oncoming traffic with my two young children to end our lives. Only days later, I once again felt that I was at the lowest point in my life as the reality of this event truly hit during a medical-surgical examination.
It is said that the environment of our upbringing plays a salient role in determining the ambitions we pursue, the moral values we cherish and ultimately, the lasting contributions we make to society. I firmly believe that my formative experiences laid down the foundation for passion for nursing and constitute one of the salient reasons why I am determined to pursue this profession. For me nursing, is more than a mere vocation, it is a moral commitment, the manifestation of my natural talents and the actualization of the deep-seated aspirations that I have nourished since childhood. My mother was an accomplished nurse and always set a remarkable example for me to follow by displaying virtues of compassion, moral courage and dedication to the public good. My life experiences compelled me to emulate her example by cultivating the virtues of compassion and genuine sensitivity to patients. My formative experiences and core values led me to enter this career in the capacity of a Certified Nursing Assistant where I was distinguished for not only my competence as a nurse assistant, but also for my remarkable sensitivity to the needs of the patients. I intend to continue to actualize my natural talents by pursuing a career in Nursing.
My initial interest in nursing began from my experience with my grandmother. It was in the fall of 2007 when my grandmother was sent to the hospital due to hypernatremia. My dad would pick me up every afternoon from school to visit my grandmother. I was given the responsibility to look after my grandma for nearly two weeks that includes in feeding her, assisting her, and other light duties. What fascinate me during my visits in the hospital were the nurses who assisted and took care of my grandma. They treated my grandma with dignity, kindness, compassion, courtesy, respect, understanding, and love. Their commitment, professionalism, dedication, determination and skills inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field. From that point, I realized that nursing is a field that enables people impact other people’s lives and make a difference. At 9 years old, being a nurse was a childhood dream and now I am at the point of turning my dream into reality. I want to study and pursue my dream registered nursing at Ryerson University that offers a nursing degree program that focuses on developing student’s critical thinking skills, ability to analyze reflectively and apply theory through community health focused practice making Ryerson one of the best nursing schools in Canada.
Witnessing the patience, strength, and compassionate attributions that nurses convey within their care was remarkable. Having the opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of another human being was a very overwhelming and humbling experience for me. Therefore, these encounters set the foundation towards my pursuit of a nursing career.
My interest in nursing sparked when I was twelve years old. My grandfather suffered from terminal cancer in which I had the privilege to care for him on a few occasions. This precious opportunity ultimately led me to pursue a career in nursing. I graduated from a Diploma based nursing program seven years ago and am currently enrolled in my final semester of Bachelors of Science Nursing degree. Working as a registered nurse has opened up many opportunities, but has not satisfied my thirst for furthering my education.
When I was fourteen years old, my great-grandmother had an ischemic stroke and struggled with Broca’s Aphasia until she passed away seven months later. What she left me with, however, was a gift greater than anything of monetary value: passion for the healthcare field. For months prior to her death, I watched her devote her life to redeeming her expressive language. I was inspired tremendously by her gallantry and decided that I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. However, when I was applying to colleges, I chose nursing because it was what my parents suggested I pursue as a career. After coming to college with the anticipation of graduating with a degree in nursing, I was disappointed when, after two years of school, I realized

The opportunity to challenge myself in UCLA’s School of nursing, in addition to my own personal experiences and traits, supply me with a fierce determination to succeed in my academics, in my nursing career, and in fulfilling my aspirations as a whole.
Shelly Field suggests nurse midwifery is the perfect job for someone who displays “compassion and constantly desires to help others.” (Field, 1997, p. 52) Another article states, “people become midwives because of the real impact we can have on our patients and their child birth experiences.” (Haynes, 1998, p. 490) This paper explores the incredible opportunities that are available to a student pursuing the career of nurse midwifery.
To become an intellectual and competent nurse, I believe that I should strive to be well-rounded in a variety of aspects. My experiences as a former outpatient, a nursing assistant trainee, and being part of a patient’s family make up the foundation of my personal nursing philosophy. Furthermore, I am aware that self-care, empathy, culture, communication, advocacy and education are some of the most significant factors that all individuals should be informed of before choosing a career path in the health care setting. I will also take account of the knowledge I have obtained from class lectures and personal experiences and apply what I have learned into my nursing practice.
I had known of my passion for the nursing industry from a young age, choosing Florence Nightingale as a character for my Year 2 play. As I grew older, I turned to my aunts, two of which are specialist midwives, for guidance. They provided me with knowledge on situations midwives face, such as the hardships surrounding stillborn babies and other possible birth complications. While in America, I had the opportunity to visit a university, where discussions on various careers were taking place - including midwifery. The midwives discussed their jobs within the hospital, including connections with the patients, the work environment and the working hours.
Becoming a midwife is a long-term goal that I have maintained since early childhood. I am aware that my choice of becoming a Nurse-Midwife will throw many challenges and rigorous demands which I am ready to face because I want to help individuals who cannot help themselves, as well as, bridge service gaps to reduce health
My interest and fascination in nursing dates back to when I was in the hospital for my grandparents. Despite the fact that I was there as a supportive family member, I found myself watching the nurses in action, assisting both the patient and my family. This was the first time I realized that I wanted to be a nurse, the person who was so dedicated in caring for my grandparents. Ever since that moment in the hospital, I knew nursing would be the career meant for me.
