Screen time in high quantities can have negative health consequences for children, but are still used because of their positive effects. Most children today have access to devices such as television, smartphones, computers, and tablets. These devices can be used in a variety of ways, with both positive and negative outcomes. For example, preschool aged children may use a device to learn letters, numbers, or colors. School aged children may use a computer to conduct research, or watch an educational show. A child may also sit in front of the television for many hours, reducing physical activity, and become obese. I believe it is important for the parent or caregiver of the child to monitor the amount of screen time, as well as the content to optimize the benefits these devices can offer.
Technology has been part of our daily live more frequently than before. Screen time has been more popularly used on kids and adolescents. On a daily bases many kids seem to spend more time inside on their tablets, instead of having to spend time with other kids. This is a problem that is becoming more popular over the years,on whether kids need to spend that much time on technology or not. Parents either seem to have strict technology usage, or they either don’t. There has always been a huge controversy with experts, who either think that screen time is beneficial or could cause problems later on in life. According to some research this is another reason to reduce screen time. Joan Ganz Cooney Center, a non-profit research and production institute, suggested that little ones spend less than half the time in front of screens watching educational material between the ages of 2 and 10. We can only assume that statistic will deplete in time. Family income cannot be helped but is also a determining factor. According to the center lower income families had their children doing better with watching educational screen activities then higher income families. Statistics show that screen time negatively affects children’s learning abilities and development. “The effects of so much screen time can include speech delays, aggressive behavior and obesity.” (Lavey) Since parents play a role in how much television their kids can watch, they can minimize the chances of their brains not developing correctly. “The first 2 years of life are considered a critical time for brain development. TV and other electronic media can get in the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and others, which encourages learning and healthy physical and social development.” (Kids Health) Children do

Dunckley states, “…interactive screen-time is more likely to cause sleep, mood, and cognitive issues, because it’s more likely to cause hyper arousal and compulsive use.” She lists six reasons how electronics alter our moods.
This previous research, such as that of Dr. Arc Sigman as well as Jerome and Dorothy Singer, is conclusive that parents and educators must be careful with children and their time spent in front of screens. Dr. Sigman studies the issue from a biological standpoint, discussing the mental and physical effects of technology on children (Sigman, 2012).
There have been a multitude of studies in recent years on the subject of screen time and the effects it can have on children of all ages. Previously, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that children from 0-2 years of age not be exposed to any screen time at all (American Academy of Pediatrics, [AAP], 2016). This included television, video games, smart phones, tablets, movies and computers. The AAP has recently changed its recommendation, though, stating that “Some media can have educational value for children starting at around 18 months of age, but it 's critically important that this be high-quality programming, such as the content offered by Sesame Workshop and PBS.” (AAP, 2016). There are around seventy-five million children in the United States as of 2016. The population of children and the estimated amount of time they spend looking at a screen is a tremendous one. On average children thirteen to eighteen years old spend around nine hours looking at a screen. Children that ages range from eight to twelve years old spend around six hours looking at a screen (Shapiro 1). This journal article talks about how screen media use can affect children and their development. There are different types of screen media and as time goes more and more screen media is being introduced and at younger ages.
For as long as media has been in our society, parents have been concerned about the impact it may have on their children. The first example of this was in the 1920’s and 30’s as the popularity of movie viewing increased and “questions were raised and charges were made about the possible harmful effects on children” (7). Following movies, radio was then studied to make sure it was not having a negative effect on U.S. children. As new technology continues to be introduced into our society, the same concerns similar concerns are always voiced. Since the introduction of television into American homes in the late 1940’s and early 50’s, researchers have focused their efforts to find any correlation between screen time and its impact on children.

Children are growing up with all this technology interfering with the children's childhood and health. Parents should limit screen time for their children two hours a day. Technology is over powering our world today. Parents shouldn't introduce technology to their children's life quite yet wait until the children are at least three or four years of age. The use of digital device during a young age can interfere with the child's health. If the children are exposed to digital devices when they are young they will have mental and health problems.
