NBA Cares: Cyril Sablich
NBA Cares foundation was started in October in 2005, with David Stern the former NBA commissioner. It was made for the teams and the players to help those in need. Since October 2005 when NBA Cares was launched the league and teams have raised more than $270 million for charity, provided more than 3.5 million hours of hands on service, and built more than 995 places where kids and families can live, learn to play in communities all around the world.
Most players have charities like Russell Westbrook, Pau Gasol, Kevin Love, Chris Paul, Shane Battier, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, Stephen Curry, LeBron James. Those are just some of the great basketball players that help out with their communities and their
The (0-3) Los Angeles Lakers are back in downtown Los Angeles, at the Staples Center, to battle the (1-2) Denver Nuggets. The Lakers are facing the unenviable task of changing the narrative and after three straight losses, attempting to remove the stench that is emanating from their defense.
We’re deep into the dog days of summer, and the NBA offseason is officially cooling down. The NBA Draft has come and gone, big free agents have drawn their battle lines and people are almost done having a heart attack about Timofey Mozgov getting $16 million per season from the Los Angeles Lakers. With nothing but the always-exhilarating Summer League games ahead of us, here are the biggest winners and losers of the NBA offseason.
“We Got Next”. This phrase is most commonly used around the asphalt when vying to play the next game of pick up basketball. Founded on April 24, 1996, the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association. The Women’s National Basketball Association is the most prevalently known professional basketball league in the United States for women, most commonly referred to as its’ acronym WNBA. It was finally the ladies’ turn as they made their statement that they would be playing the next game. The first season for the Women’s National Basketball Association began in 1997. Sheryl Swoopes, one of the league’s first sixteen players, was the first player signed by the WNBA on October 23, 1996. She signed with the Houston Comets, one of the eight teams in the
Miami, FLA. - The three-time NBA champions the Miami Heat tipped of their 30th season with a 96-90 victory over the Atlanta Hawks in a preseason game on October 1.
Swish! You hear that a lot if your a Golden State Warriors fan. The Warriors have won 5 NBA titles and are fourth in the most titles won. First being the Boston Celtics with 17.
The Pistons just fired Stan van Gundy for two rookies as head coach jake plamondon and Isaiah Lynn. It's they're first time coaching in the NBA ever. They are trying to turn the Pistons around into a championship contender. In they're press conference earlier they stated "we are looking for constant improvement and it all starts with trades, budgets, and free agents."
As the summer winds down and the NBA season is upon us, the Golden State Warriors are planning for their fight to claim another championship ring. Last season, the Warriors won the most games in a single season in NBA history (73), but fell just short of winning back-to-back championships. Having recruited superstar Kevin Durant, who joined the team this summer, seems to have made Golden State even more frightening than it already was. However, past experiences have shown us that a cluster of superstars on one team doesn’t necessarily mean an automatic ring.
The last we saw of any live NBA basketball action, was an incredible Game 7 of the NBA Finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers edging out the "greatest regular season team ever" the Golden State Warriors. LeBron James showed he was still the best player in the league when he brought back the Cavs ( with help from Kyrie Irving) from a 3-1 deficit. King James put on a masterful performance in the last three games, going for 41 points in Game 5 and 6, and then dropping a triple-double in Game 7 to clinch the championship. He won the trophy for Cleveland aka Believeland, the first chip there in any sport in 52 years. It was a fairy tale ending for the Cavaliers. As for Golden State, it was a very disappointing final, coughing up a 3-1 lead to lose
The 1992-1993 season rolled around, with Jordan and the Chicago Bulls looking to make history yet again. Early in the year the Bulls started off slow and looked as if they did not have a chance for the title. (Christopher 97) By the end of the season they were learning to win again “winning the Central Division with a 57-25 record, third best in the league” (Christopher 97). Once again the Bulls made it to the Championship Game leaving every person in shock that they made it once again. The Bulls were up against the Phoenix Sun and pushed the series to game six where the Chicago Bulls were in the position to three-peat. The end of the game was near when the Bulls were down by two, 99-98, when Suns guard threw up an air ball with 14 seconds left. (Christopher 100).
Being the “team of the decade” is a huge title to have. It sounds like it would be hard to obtain that title, but we see multiple different teams dominating the NBA during certain decades. The question “why?” is a good question to ask; it can all be traced back to certain star players that would dominate the league so much that they made certain teams a “power house” team. I believe that teams of the decade are not a real thing, but player of the decade is a better term to give someone and more deserving.
The level of talent and competition is a huge difference between basketball in America and basketball overseas. America’s best league, the NBA, has the best talent in the entire world and it is not even close. Just take a look at what happened this past summer in the Olympics. It is hard to even create an argument of where the better talent is, America or overseas because every time there is an international tournament the United States wins, with a few exceptions. The other countries were not even close to competing with the United States. The players that are on those countries teams participate in both NBA and European leagues but, more European than NBA. I know this date goes way back, because the NBA has more superstars and better overall
To achieve a goal a team has to work together. I was mad when Liam had to move away from Carter, his best friend, and cousin. I was sad when I moved out my old house that my parents brought me home to when I was born. This has changed me because I used to be jealous of people when they had something I wanted but I have changed. One of many ways this changed me is that I have learned to never give up.
Evaluate international markets and choose 11 candidate cities that would benefit the NBA expansion best.
I Andre Winters have always wanted to play in the NBA. I have bought all of the NBA 2k games they have, but this one has never done this to me. On January, 5th 2016 the newest game out in stores had just came out. I am determined to get it no matter what I have to do.
Professional sports in which athletes receive compensation for their athletic talent and abilities, is often only associated with the entertainment industry. One can watch a sporting event on TV or pay to go to the arena or stadium to watch the competition live. Outside of watching and participating in a sport, professional leagues are businesses, concerned about making a profit from their fan base. It is seldom that one would associate a professional athletic club with philanthropy. According to Webster’s College Dictionary, the definition of philanthropy is an “altruistic concern for human beings especially as manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons or to institutions advancing human welfare” (Webster’s). In a business concerned with its bottom line, donating money for a humanitarian cause would seem like a seldom seem practice. The Barcelona Football Club, however, has proven throughout the years that giving back to the community is what helps them adhere to their team motto “mes que un club” or Catalan for “more than a club”.
