To ensure a successful expansion, we recommend the following implementation plan: 1. Have an IBA forthcoming date set for 2014. • Evaluate international markets and choose 11 candidate cities that would benefit the NBA expansion best. • Insure traveling plans, scheduling, and game facilities are appropriate. • Develop an effective marketing plan for the international basketball fan. • Expand the current NBA development league to European countries by 2010. 2. Expand the 29 teams in the NBA to 40. Adding 11 teams and separating into two conferences. • Keep the conferences divided into East and West like they currently are. • Add The 10 European Expansion Teams to the new IBA’s Eastern Conference. • Move five of the teams that are currently in the NBA’s Eastern Conference to the Western Conference. The result would be 2 Conferences, an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference, each containing 20 teams, 10 teams in the East would be located outside the United States. Our suggested implementation plan will undoubtedly increase the NBA’s long-term profits. We view international expansion as an opportunity cost that will eventually benefit the NBA. Expansion of NBA franchises overseas instead of within the boundaries of the United States is much more expensive, but the potential profitability and marketability of the selected franchise cities overseas outweighs increased costs of overseas expansion implementation. Introduction It
In the early spring of 1969 a group of Boston community leaders had an idea about creating a city-wide basketball program to both introduce the
If the PPL were to adopt the NFL draft protocol the PPL would need to protect themselves from antitrust laws. The first thing would be to establish a CBA and constitution that stated all the eligibility rules. The PPL should operate as a single entity league because it is such a new league. We must establish certain protocols that will help us determine the eligibility of our players. I think it is in the best interest of our league to create a minimum age requirement such as the NBA. We will establish that age at twenty. It does not matter how many years the athlete plays in college or when they decide to declare for the draft as long as they are twenty years of age they are eligible for the draft. This will allow us to be protected from lawsuits
In 2010 there was a study conducted by Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce to determine what the economic impact of the Memphis Grizzlies and the FedEx Forum was on the economy of the greater Memphis area. A professional sports team such as the Memphis Grizzlies is going to aid the community in increasing the revenue of the local economy. Games or concerts at the arena will draw in individuals from outside of the area who will buy such things as food, luxuries, or hotel rooms, which directly impact the local economy. This is why it can be beneficial for a large community such as Memphis to be able to host a professional sports team. In order to determine the benefits and economic impact, the community and organization need to be able to determine
“Profit growth is measured by the percentage increase in net profits over time. In general, higher profitability and a higher rate of profit growth will increase the value of an enterprise and thus the returns garnered by its owners, the shareholders.” (Hill, Global Business Today.) This is the main reason that it is important that the Women’s National Basketball Association is successful. Started by the NBA, the WNBA has been lucky to start out with a partner that is already stable in it’s industry. The WNBA was not able to support itself when it started out, similar to most leagues. The NBA spent more than $10 million per year during the mid-2000s to keep the WNBA financially solvent. Without the NBA, the WNBA would’ve folded. It was estimated that teams were losing around $1.5 million to $2 million a
With more teams in the league, that means more players. As you add more players and more teams to the league, the talent of the extra players eventually decreases. If there were only 15 teams instead of 30, you would get rid of many less talented players and have only the best. Also, with more spots in the NHL, there are not enough talented players to fill all of the spots. This means the most talented players are sought after
Requiem for the Big East Assignment The documentary “Requiem for the Big East” shows the history of a conference that rose from a wasteland to national prominence, only to face a decline. This essay delves into the history of the league, analyzing the early struggles of the Northeast college basketball to the meteoric rise of the Big East and eventual fall. Before the Big East, the Northeast college basketball landscape was a wasteland. Teams lacked national recognition and television exposure. Star players existed but without extensive television and conference prestige, individual players struggled to gain recognition.
Some feel that the playoff system would not be fair to students and alumni. They would not be able to make travel plans in advance because each team would play in a different city during the holiday season in december and january and they will not be able to predict where where the games will
This will create a more fair and honest process for both the players and owners in the long run
My proposal to fix the NBA Draft lottery would be to remove the lottery aspect entirely, and instead allow teams to bid on draft slots using wins. This would first require calculating the average number of wins across all teams that miss the playoffs and split the teams into two groups: above average and below average. Teams that are below the average would bid in once process on the first X number of picks (X represents the number of below average teams), while the above average teams would bid in a second process on whichever of the first fourteen picks remain. The rest of the picks would be allocated as they currently are, to the playoff teams in order of how they did in the regular season. When the below average teams bid, they would be
A lot of people state that since there are so many teams, there is no way to play each team. This is wrong for the following reason. Every team doesn’t have to make the playoffs. Only one of every conference (and one from the FBS Independents with six teams in them). Every team has a conference (besides the FBS Independents) which means every team has a chance to compete in their conference championship game. This would mean that every team in each conference (including an FBS Independents championship) would have an equal opportunity to make the playoffs (NCAA
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has transformed over the many of years as an organization and a brand, into a multibillion-dollar business that draws thousands and thousands of fans to each and every game. Many contributing factors have made the NBA what it is today, but the main cause of this gain in interest is the ultimate rivalry between two remarkable players, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Larry “the Legend” Bird. The battling rivalry amongst these individuals is comparable to the feud of Coca Cola and Pepsi, or, Star Wars and Star Trek. During the era of modern television, and the still and ever present racial bigotry, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird helped redefine the game of basketball and popularity of the NBA with their
Including more than four teams is what the college football world wants. It would make so much more sense to do it that way. For example, this season, the Memphis Tigers are ranked 13th in the nation. With a four team playoff, it doesn’t give Memphis a chance to prove their worth. If the committee was to accept a bigger playoff, perhaps a 16 team playoff, teams like Memphis will get a chance to win a National Championship. Teams like the previously mentioned Utah Utes will get a title shot if they expand.
Forget trying to make it resemble a regular game - it doesn't work. The entire format has got to change. Instead of the current atrocity being put forth, they should make into a street ball style 3-on-3 tournament. The top 4 fan voted players from each conference get to choose their teammates from the pool available in their conference. To keep the games short, the first team to 11 points wins and advances
If while you were watching the NBA and ever asked yourself how the sport and all it is about became what it is today, here are a few things that could help answer those questions.
We are going to start with a bit of History, when the NBA League started marketing was a heavy and important part, due to the fact that there needed to be followers in order for the association to continue “living”. The 1960’s were a known for their purity and realism, followed by the
