One of the main principles ingrained within me is to accept all people, no matter their appearance, social stance, or circumstances. I was raised with the core value of extending yourself on behalf of someone else. As a young child, this led me to befriend the class outcast; in high school I devoted many hours to volunteering within the special needs population; and as an undergrad student I found myself listening to and guiding many of my peers. The gratification I felt after giving to others only encouraged me to do more. Life is filled with great challenges and many people are in need of someone to support them as they struggle. I realized I want to be that person. Naturally, I know how to help others; thus, I am aiming to build …show more content…
The nature of this profession causes many complex ethnic issues to arise. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW)'s Code of Ethics guides Social Workers how to respond in such scenarios. I understand the ethnical decisions I will make as a social worker, are to reflect the core values and standards described by NASW Code of Ethics. It is important to have a foundation of ethnical beliefs set in place before constructing a life-altering decision for a client. I recognize my own ideals have sovereignty over my personal life, but in the field of social work it is important I uphold the values complied by NASW. Furthermore, several of my personal values are intertwined with the values of NASW. I firmly believe in many of the concepts described by NASW, such as treating each individual with dignity, personal integrity, the right to confidentiality, and the importance of interpersonal …show more content…
Wayne's M.S.W. graduate students undertake the task of improving, spreading, analyzing, and utilizing the information learned through courses and field work to better the lives of disadvantaged individuals, families, and communities. Through hands-on experience within vulnerable, oppressed, and poor societies, they develop social welfare policy for urban communities. By committing to an intense graduate program, I expect to broaden my skill set and expand my ability to assist those in need. My leadership skills have found me, time and time again, standing up for the rights of the underprivileged groups. I am creative and can often think of out-of-the-book solutions to social problems. I hope to use my education as a means to strengthen my abilities in interpersonal areas to improve the lives of individuals within the urban
Through experiencing social injustices, and making myself more culturally aware of inequality amongst social classes, I believe I have cultivated the leadership skills necessary for success. My willingness to reach out to the environment beyond me has exposed me to a career path that excites me and is my true passion. I plan to take action to improve the lives of the defenseless and those who are politically and socially disadvantaged. Through utilizing what I have learned by dedicating my time to service I know that I will truly make an impact on the lives of the helpless. During my years attending university I plan to continue a rigorous course load focused on a career path that truly intrigues me. I also plan on continuing to dedicate my free time to service and philanthropy. Overall, I have dedicated my high school career to becoming a leader in and out of the classroom. I hope that by attending University of Texas-Austin I will be able to utilize the resources provided to become a leader prepared to make worldwide change, continue on a path of academic achievement, and create a successful future not only for myself, but for those in generations to come as
All this and more will help me reach my goal of one day being able to relate to a wide variety people, being able to work with and guide anyone, and everyone, through relationships developed between a leader and his followers. I wish to be that leader that makes a change in the world to help relieve the pressure that people around the world feel every day, the pressure to work with people that they hate, that they despise, by eliminating that distaste.
The third value is dignity and worth of a person. This is one value that has been stressed in my social work classes. In my social work practice class, we recently read a novel titled The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Dignity and worth of a person, was one value that I witnessed while reading this novel. The characters were from another country and had beliefs that were not considered “ideal” to society, and there were times that they were not given the best resources and care because of these beliefs. Dignity and self worth is a huge value to have when dealing with clients who may not have the same views and beliefs as you. It is important to be ethical and respectful when dealing with clients no matter what religion, socioeconomic status, gender, or race they are.
1. Identify the most significant boundary issue(s) or “circumstances where social workers encounter actual or potential conflicts between their social, sexual, religious or business relationships” (Reamer, 2003) exhibited by the worker in this case. Justify your answer with specific evidence from the case AND the NASW Code of Ethics.
The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment is a guideline designed to help Early Childhood educators and other professionals who work in infant/toddler programs, preschools, child care centers, family child care homes, kindergarten, and primary classrooms in issues that involve young children and their families.
As future DNP’s, we will be faced with patients who wish to end their life due to a terminal illness. We have to remember our ethical principles, and we have to be advocates for our patients. Our patients should not be judged for how they want their end of life care to be. Our patient’s safety should not be jeopardized. As future primary care providers, we might take care of patients who clearly states in their advance directives, that if they reach a terminal stage in their disease, they do not want to live anymore. We would have to communicate with our patients and let them know where PAS is legalized. I stand by my statement that PAS is ethical. Healthcare providers are not performing an action that is against the patient’s will.
My personal values are very similar to the NASW Code of Ethics’ values. Some of the main values of the NASW Code of Ethics are service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. These values are all important to me, as I always strive to be thoughtful of others’ feelings and opinions, work hard, and understand what is going on around me. To me, a very important part of the NASW Code of Ethics is Privacy and Confidentiality. As someone who has had a social worker, and has had multiple therapists and psychiatrists, confidentiality was very essential to me as a client. If not for confidentiality, I would not have been able to fully express how I was feeling. Another value that I believe to be critical is respect. Respect is one of my three main values for many reasons, especially when thinking about social work. My goal, as a friend and future social worker, is to
Another ethical principles from the core values that I feel is strongly needed is social justice. I feel that is where Social Workers can make the most difference. Challenging the injustice vulnerable population face would help them get access to more resources. Challenging those injustice would also bring much needed awareness on issues vulnerable population faces daily. Social Justice is important because it would give policymakers the push they need to make changes regarding those defenseless
In the National Association for Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics, there are many standards a social worker should uphold in order to promote a healthy and helpful relationship with the client. One such aptitude is Cultural Competence and Social Diversity, which is in section 1.05 of the NASW code of ethics (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). There are three sections associated with this competency “Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths in all cultures”. It is assumed that “social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients’ cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients”. As a
Moreover, this case should be analyzed based on the information provided by the NASW Code of Ethics. The ethical principle included in the NASW Code of Ethics (2008) states that “social worker’s primary goal is to help people in need and to address social problems…Social workers seek to resolve conflicts between clients’ interests and the broader society’s interests in a socially responsible manner” (p.5). Suzanne’s social worker would only have to seek for Suzanne’s well-being because if Suzanne and Cindy get separated, they can lose contact, which would affect Suzanne 's emotions.
The mission of social work is to empower and enhance the quality of life by helping all people to meet the basic human needs, especially with those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. The mission of social work is deep rooted in a set of core values that have acted as the foundation for social work. The core social work values are service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW Code of Ethics). As social workers, we must apply the core values in our everyday profession and practice. The NASW Code of Ethics provides clear understanding of principles and values social workers should hold and exemplify. Our primary goal as social workers is to help those
Social worker professions are guided by the professional body of Australia Association of Social Work code of ethics and practice standards (AASW, 2010). Thus, social workers should first have an understanding of their ethical code for practice when entering into a organisation. As the AASW (2010) states “social worker will uphold the ethical values and responsibilities of this code, even though employers’ policies or official may not be compatible with its provisions (AASW, 2010, p.33). Social worker should analysis organisation policies and procedures as these are the rules and responsibilities which the workers must compile too (McDonald, Craik, Hawkins & William, 2012) In addition, a social worker should must make sure the policy and polices compatible with the AASW code of ethics, as previous stated
Personal values, beliefs, and perspectives that are compatible with the agency’s mission and compatible with the NASW Code of Ethics.
Ethics also plays a huge part in making a decision that yields a more positive outcome. Ethical Codes provides a framework and guidance for maintaining obligations to different stakeholders (Follari, 81).NAEYC and NEA both created a code of ethics. The national education association (NEA) code of ethics has two main principles: commitment to the student and commitment to the profession. NAEYC also developed a code of ethics with the intent to “give practitioners a research-based framework for making sound decisions in their work, especially when faced with ethical dilemmas” (Follari , 72). NAEYC code set a framework of professional responsibilities in four sections that address professional relationships that include: children, families, colleagues, and community and society; and in which each section is divided into ideal and principles. (NAECY 2011, pg 2)
My five core values are honesty, respect, perseverance, kindness, and passion. For me, honesty and respect are the most important ones, because I strongly believe in the Golden Rule. It is only through honesty that trust can be built upon. Mutual respect is about being nonjudgmental about the differences between another individual and I. Though I may not agree with another person’s beliefs or life choices, I still refrain from making criticisms on the thoughts or actions of another, and I want to be treated the same way. It is especially important to show respect to those with a medial job, because some people often forget that they are still active contributors to the well-being of the society. In addition, I believe that nobody is entitled to his or her success. Perseverance keeps me working diligently toward my goals. Sometimes the tasks are dull, but I will not easily give up if they bring benefits to me at the end. A simple act of kindness does not require much effort, but it can make someone else’s life
