There are several personal attributes that contribute to my resistance to seek advice from knowledgeable persons. I am of the ISFJ type and one of our qualities is that we are quiet. My shyness often gets in the way of me seeking advisement. I am also worried that if I ask someone for help or advice that I will be bothering them. Asking for advice makes me feel weak. I feel that I should be able to do everything on my own and that if I have to ask for advice then it will seen as a sign of weakness or as a failure. My qualities of being realistic, practical, cooperative, thoughtful, and kind cause leaders to seek me out for advisement. After reading the assigned textbooks and completing the workshop, in order to be a better advisor I need to
How do I make use of counselling skills and knowledge in helping interactions and/or in helping work?
I feel that I nodded my head way too much. I think that I should have used other forms of
When I was working with a student he will have the right concept, but he will hesitate in which answer choice to pick. In order to help him overcome this I told him to not overthink it and to trust his guts. At first I thought this was a very basic way to approach the situation, but when the next test he approached me and told me how he took my advice and incorporated it whenever he was in doubt. I was later informed that he began helping other scholars in different ways, and many people were soon gaining confidence and it became very noticeable. This is the time were one simple concept/advice impacted various people in a beneficial
I can become overly interested in helping, persuading, and leading others feeling strongly that I know what is best for them. I analyze issues and offer advice whether welcomed or not. When I overdo red I run the risk of overstepping boundaries and sounding like a “know it all”. I unintentionally leave other people with a feeling that I have been forceful or intrusive. Knowing that I naturally fall into the area of being an assertive helper I should strive to keep those tendencies balanced.
The aim of this assignment is to compare and contrast two theories or theorists of counselling from psychodynamic, humanistic or cognitive behavioural traditions and also to assess their strengths and weaknesses. This essay will focus on exploring the contrasting ideas and approaches of Carl Rogers who is a key figure associated with the person-centered approach and Fritz Perls who developed Gestalt therapy. Although they are both regarded as humanistic counsellors, they share a very different approach when working with clients. I have chosen to analyse these two theorists because of their contrasting styles, in particular my curiosity was sparked after viewing both Perls and Rogers sessions with Gloria. I found it fascinating how such different styles could still be successful in therapy. In particular fritz perls style really grabbed my attention as at first, I was really put off by his seemingly rude demeanour. However, after reading information on gestalt therapy and the ideas behind it I started to understand how it works.
In this essay, the characteristics of a counsellor and a friend will be expanded upon in order to gain a greater knowledge for deciphering the two.
¬When considering what my own personal philosophy of counseling would be, it was eye opening to consider who I was a person and how much I have grown. The self analysis was new to me because I never thought about how I do that on a day to day basis. Reviewing the questions I found that a lot of my focus surrounded family, my significant other, and close friends. Constantly living in a diverse population and having that as my surrounding also made its mark in my answers. I also noted that both past and present influences, but primarily the present, play a large role in my own perspective. By following the prompt, I was made to understand that my thought process makes me think of what is occurring in the present and how I can alter these
Use your work from P3 and analyse (consider in detail) it e.g. what are your strengths in counselling skills, why you think they are your strengths and where do you use them. What are your weaknesses, why do you think they are your weaknesses and what can you do to turn them into strengths.
One reason why I believe you should take advise from others is because you can learn from others mistakes.
I want to be a peer advisor so that I can help Exploring and Transfers students to focus on fixing their faults as students, so they may reach their full potential, just as my peer advisor, Kia Seagall, did for me. I was disappoint after I have gotten a C+ on my first paper. I put my pride aside, and asked Kai to look at my paper. After reading less than a page, she told me to read my paper aloud. I was reading, when she said, “that’s not what it says. You wrote defiantly instead definitely.” Instead of reading what was on the page, my mouth was saying what my mind wanted it to say. Every time I would skip over my mistake, Kia would point it.
Saying no means breaking habits, addictions, friendships, stopping things you find pleasurable. Saying no also means you have to give up on those friendships as they may be toxic. Breaking habits which may cause aggression, because you were so used to it and just suddenly stopping may make you
The counselling video provided a useful tool to self-reflect and become responsive to my interactions with cliental. Having the ability to replay an identical interview multiple times I have been able to build an in-depth analysis of my own strengths and weaknesses of my counselling skills. (At 6:34 minute mark, issue exploration begins).
Direct advice suggests that the counsellor/therapist is going to tell the client what to do to resolve their problem, giving them the answer directly. It suggests that the person giving the advice understands exactly the client’s problem, understands their world view and is fully qualified to solve the issue. However, helping clients to develop actions suggests that the therapist will stand alongside the client, investigating possible solutions and options. The therapist can then help to empower the client to take these actions forward and develop a future strategy. The client remains in control of the decision making process regarding what action will be
It is quite remarkable to see the skills I have learnt put into action with individuals I encounter in my every day dealings. By implementing the basic counselling skills learnt, it has aided me in being a better person and also laid the foundations for my future career. Many skills were used in a variety of situations in the past quarter of a year, however, only a brief description of a few will be discussed below. It is simpler to learn a core skill from a textbook however it is more complex to apply that skill in practise; every individual is different and so are each of their issues. It is important as a student to familiarise ourselves with the key skills needed to become a successful skilled helper. In the beginning we are taught
These are some of the cautions that were revealed through this assessment for me: The advice characteristics shows a desire to seek considerable amounts of advice. This was a known for me and it was born out of a need to do things right without error, and trying to make sure that I do not fail. I have learned that when trying to succeed and accomplish goals, there will be times of failure. This is the way that people learn and improve. If you are in a position, where you can get feedback to help you realize your mistakes. Feedback is also important in that regard to incorporate counsel, so that proper corrections can be made. The concern with a person that operate with the need of a high level of advice is the individual will delay making decisions. This is ok for some situations, but sometimes a decision with have to be made right away. I realize with this being one of my methods of operation, I will have to practice making decisions on the fly, in order to become more comfortable making decisions without being advised. I will learn to use this as a strength, by staying up on what current in my field, therefore I will be confident in my own decisions. The second caution that was revealed from the assessment is the process creativity, which said that I prefer to stick to standard rules and practices, when implementing solutions to problems rather than shifting processes to achieve solutions. This is accurate, but the other side is I do like to follow a plan that is already
