She wrote this poem in order to perform in front of high school and elementary school students to try and stop bullying. This menace has terrorized the small community of Nooksack for years and this year her new targets seem to be Braden Hetrick and the stunning Cy Encinias. They've finally come forward with their truly horrific stories of being "roasted" and targeted by Newhouse.

(attention grabbing strategy) How would you feel if you were laying in a hospital bed knowing that you were almost killed for your sexual identity? What would it be like if you would rather kill yourself than knowing you have to go to school tomorrow? This is exactly what happened to Jamie Nabozny. (background information) He was an ordinary child growing up in a small Wisconsin town of Ashland. Everything was fine until his life took a violent turn when his classmates figured out that he was gay. Then, people started teasing him to a point when it was simply unbearable. As a result, he even tried to overdose on drugs, feeling that death was the only escape. (thesis) Bullying is a very serious matter that can lead to misery (craft), depression and even death. Merriman Webster’s Dictionary defines a bully as “one habitually cruel to others who are weaker.” One could venture to say that bullies have been around as long as there have been stronger and weaker people in the world. Miller (2012) points out that oftentimes bullies are people who are aware of the variation in others because they themselves have experienced the world in some way that is different from the general norm. He goes on to mention that bullying could be considered a form of microaggression and assumes many different shapes. Lastly, he identifies a series of different types of bullying that bullies can perpetuate which include: verbal, physical, material, relational, hate-motivated, and cyber (Miller 2012).

A teacher refers a student to the counselor who has displayed behavior out of the norm for that particular student. The student has had excessive absences in the past three weeks, failed to complete quality work, and has participated in inappropriate behavior. Teachers and even the campus administrator have contacted the student’s parents to see if there is something going on at home that may be the causing these behaviors. The parents said that their son has been having migraines so they have allowed him to stay home from school. They also stated they had taken him to the doctor, but that the doctor did not find any health issues or reasons for the migraines. The student, a 15 year old boy, expresses his frustration to the school counselor. The boy explains he has been getting bullied by other boys at school and that he is the target of humiliation during the lunch hour and also during passing periods. The student shares how the boys make fun of the way he dresses and the fact that he has never had a girlfriend. The student explains that the bullying has been taking place for at least five months and that his teachers never do anything about it. The bullying has become so severe that the boy despises school and would rather die than have to come endure the pain that the other boys inflict upon him. His emotions have caused him to feel unmotivated resulting in poor performance in the classroom and misbehavior
Every day, someone somewhere is a victim of harassment and humiliation. Bullying has become such a growing epidemic in today’s society that it has become a pervasive health concern. There are more and more students being victimized and strained by other peers each day. Almost one in every four students reports being bullied throughout their school year. (National center for Education, 2015) Although bullying doesn’t just occur at school, bullying can also arise at home or work. Bullied characterizes a chronic abuse of power when the intimidator uses physical, verbal, social or emotional hostility to deliberately and continually hurt another person. Only sixty-four percent of children who were bullied did not report it; only thirty-six reported the bullying. (Petrosina, Guckenburg, DeVoe, and Hanson, 2010) Most students refuse to seek for support for the sake of their safety and for the fear of the aggressor as reporting could only escalate the circumstances. Constantly being victimized can eventually lead to serious health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and obesity. Students who experience bullying are at increased risk for poor school adjustment; sleep difficulties, anxiety, and depression. (Center for Disease Control, 2015) Not only is the victim at risk, but the aggressor as well because normally the aggressor lacks in one of those areas and to feel better about them they have to show no weakness, but also dominance to attack the weak minded. Bullying wasn’t

These past discussions have been great, so I hope that I can continue this week with the topic of BULLYING and SCHOOL VIOLENCE. As a parent of two young boys, I am 100% invested in keeping my kids safe at school and have been actively involved with their anti bullying campaign at their school. I hope that by being involved in such a program that I am setting an example that bullying is not okay and that if you are being bullying to not be afraid to tell your parents what is happening at school.
