Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among people of all ages, but mostly school-age children. Society has been aware of bullying since around 1693, but it was not viewed as a real problem until the 1970s. “While overall incidents of school violence, such as assault and theft, have declined in the last decade, bullying is on the rise.” (qtd in Tyre) The percentage of middle and high school students that have been victimized by bullying went up from 14 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2009. Bullying is a worldwide issue. Bullying can be expressed when it doesn’t seem like it’s being expressed. A bully is a person of greed, and doesn't care about who or what he is hurting. A good example of this is in the children's book “The Lorax” by Dr. Suess. You wouldn’t think that there is bullying here, but there is. When the Once-ler was cutting down all of the Lorax’s trees, this was considered bullying. The Lorax asked the Once-ler time after time to stop cutting down trees and he said no, this is a type of greed, the Once-ler was doing things that would better himself and not caring about others. The Once-ler was hurting the community. There is also an example in the book “The Kaffir Boy” the little boy, Clyde, was picking on the other little boy about his skin color and how he looks.

What is bullying? According to Merrium-Webster dictionary bullying is abuse and mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful. A bully doesn’t stop after mistreating someone one time, they constantly do it until someone stops them. A bully is usually bigger and taller than the kid they are picking on. As a matter of fact, We need to stop the bigger kids from picking on the little kids because no one deserves to be bullied. The only reason why the bigger kids pick on the smaller kids is because they don’t have a good home life and that’s how they get attention, because at home they don’t have anyone to give them attention.

The time has come when the common old time thug making a place for themselves has ended and now the devastating effects of the new bully come to life. New bullies don’t just stop with words and maybe a playground fight, now we have severe physical trauma and even death as a result of the negative responses to this type of treatment. Amazingly enough the amount of physical bullying has increased as with the increase of school bullying:

Bullying has been a serious issue in educational systems for decades. Bullying is bound to happen anywhere at any time but occurs mostly within school limits. Kathleen Winkler defines bulling in her book, Bullying, as “...any kind of ongoing physical or verbal mistreatment, done with the intent to harm, where there is an imbalance of power between bully and victim” (Winkler 14). Bullying has an extremely important impact on one’s everyday life and can affect their life negatively getting to the point where they can no longer take the blow. To try and prevent bullying from taking place in schools, one needs to know how bullying effects a person, what the role of each person involved in the situation is, and have knowledge of specific methods on how to prevent it. Bullying in schools is a serious problem and a handful of school do their part to prevent it; others, not as much, which means there is room for improvements.

Bullying is an undesirable, antagonistic conduct among not only school aged children but also adults. People who are bullied may have serious and long-term problems. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) This results in approximately 160,000 individuals stay home from school or work each day because they are afraid or feel threatened by bullies. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) Approximately 4,400 lives are lost each year due to bullying. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) A nationwide survey was done throughout public schools and private schools in 2014 to find out how many students actually considered suicide due to bullying. Bullying in schools has become a big problem worldwide. Especially for students in Madison High School who are being targeted and bullied day in and day out. Bullying can have negative consequences to the students who are getting bullied. Bullying is a repeated behavior that involves aggression towards other students that minimizes the victim’s power and lower their self-esteem. Bullying can be a type of physical, verbal, sexual assault in an education setting. It is important for parents as well as school educators to be aware of the signs of school bulling and learn how to stop it in an appropriate way.
