(attention grabbing strategy) How would you feel if you were laying in a hospital bed knowing that you were almost killed for your sexual identity? What would it be like if you would rather kill yourself than knowing you have to go to school tomorrow? This is exactly what happened to Jamie Nabozny. (background information) He was an ordinary child growing up in a small Wisconsin town of Ashland. I knew nothing about the book except its amazing title and distinct description. I have read many bullying stories, but this one seemed to stand out more compared to most stories. I wanted to read this story because it had something that interested me greatly, on the back Lucy stated that “to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly to be perfect” I found this quote quite unique in contrast to other books in this genre which intrigued me greatly.

The bullies scarred Nabozny physically and emotionally when they said, “If you say anything I will kill you”. (Elaboration) Similarly, many students who are bullied lose the will to live and do not want to attend school anymore. These frightened students are worried to talk about their encounters; despite the fact that, help might be given to them. The bully victim’s perseverance to have a better life leads him to a community health center in Minneapolis. Nabozny refused to give in to the tormentation of the bullies and wanted to have a better bully-free life. He gained the knowledge to make a lawsuit against the district. (Explanation) Sometimes people in high positions do not always do what it right; however, their job entitles it. In the introduction, Emdin includes a tragedy that occurred to a victim of bullying; “...the death of Jamey Rodemeyer, a teenager from Buffalo, NY who committed suicide after being bullied by classmates, the nation has once again become re-awakened to the fact that this issue, which flooded the media a year ago with the death of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, is not going away anytime soon” (Emdin). By including this in his article, Emdin captures the audience’s attention by showing just how big of a problem bullying is. Children are taking their own lives because they can’t handle the bullying. Bullying has become a major issue in the United States and around the world. What brought the attention to people about bullying is the number of suicides that are committed by adolescents and the stories they share online or live television. Bullying is categorized to be direct verbal, direct physical, and indirect forms. Not every person has an idea how terrible bullying can be and how harmful it is to the victim. Bullying has driven students to commit actions they have never done before such as cutting themselves, suicidal thoughts, health disorders, and bad behavior. Bullying must be taken seriously, because it results in negative effects on its victims and may drive students to commit horrific actions. Lawmakers should draft anti-bullying legislation, students should stand up for one another, and society should work out what can be done to combat this problem.
