If there were a way of predicting the future, through the use of oracles like in Minority Report or potentially through the use of some other form of technology, and subsequently use this information to prevent acts of crime, such as murder, before they happen, than overall this would be beneficial to society.
The first, and crucial, point is that it will keep people safer. Some murders are premeditated acts of violence, out of revenge, spite or simply by psychopaths. Some are crimes of passion, where people suddenly become enraged and aggressive, and others, such as muggings or robberies gone bad, can be attributed to people being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Whether you are talking about a husband stabbing his wife to death for cheating on him, or a hitman hired to kill in cold blood, if a system existed, whereby you could 'see' these events taking place, then they could both be prevented from happening. With a pre crime system in place, capable of seeing these events before they happen, many helpless victims would not have to suffer the cruel injustice of having their lives cut short by someone else.
Not only would the system work to prevent murders once they have been detected, but, once established would also act as a

Corruption is already rampant in law enforcement today. People are susceptible to bribes and threats from criminals looking to get let off, and that will probably never change. But the system must be considered on its overall merits. No matter what we do, they flaws that make us all inherently human, and separate us from robots will always be apparent. Yet as the system becomes more reliable these flaws become less and less relevant. I have already outlined the vast benefits of a Pre-crime system and overall, the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages, especially when those same disadvantages are already present in the current
Criminals are roaming America, trying to prey the innocent for their selfish desires. In an effort to lower crime rate and protect society, various people have attempted to find ways to stop criminals before they act. One of these examples is given by Henrick Karoliszyn in his article “Precognitive Police.” Karoliszyn elaborates on a system that could equip police to stop wrongdoers before they go through with their plan. The majority of criminal acts are thoroughly planned through the course of several months. With thoughtful planning and no opposing forces, criminals can perform a horrible crime in the blink of an eye. According to the system proposed by Karoliszyn, police could use suspicious activity, data, and other resources in an effort
Corruption and its effects on crime rates can be a very debatable topic to many individuals, but in reality there are many factors that support its belief. Many don't realize the seriousness and influences the can be brought up when a law enforcement official steps into the world of crime. There are many that argue that the act of corruption has no negative impacts to the current
Said to be inspired by the curiosity of our future and impacts our rapid advancement in technology on future society, the 2002 film minority report, by Steven Spielberg is set in the futuristic setting of America in 2054. The film has a theme of free vs determinism and can be seen thought out the film. A world without murder “Utopia” and a system called pre-crime is able to stop murder from happening by seeing it before the event takes place. John Anderton a father of one is a leader of the system, Anderton runs away because he sees himself commit a murder and finds out a different side to the pre crime and his boss Lamar Burgess. Throughout, the film he was given multiple choice to change his fate which he did proving the system wrong. Spielberg’s
Frank Serpico once said, "The mentality today is just the same, it's okay to be corrupt. Just don't get caught. We must create an atmosphere where the crooked cop fears the honest cop, and not the other way around. This is not time for complacent."
The criminal justice system is forever adjusting to protect and serve a changing society. The paper evaluates, identifies and assesses recent future and current trends affecting the criminal justice system. Lastly, it defines the values of the system in a changing society.
BODY 1- We can prevent disgraceful crimes from happening by bringing back the death penalty; by following this adjustment there will be minor crimes being committed. Recent research shows that each execution carried out is correlated with approximately 74 fewer murders each following year. Death penalty serves a definite purpose of reducing crime as well as bringing justice
The film ‘Minority Report’ demonstrated that despite using the system of having pre-cogs topredict futurecrimes was thought to be perfect, it is still proven in the end that the system is flawed, where someone was able to fool the system in order to
One of the issues that are affecting the future of policing is corruption. Corruption is generally defined as fraudulent and dishonest actions by public officials with power. This is the same for law enforcement as their corruption is an abuse of their authority for private gain while under duty. This improper conduct usually begins as police deviance. Law enforcement officers with such behaviors are not socially accepted yet has led other officers, especially rookies, into engaging in criminal activities.
Corruption has always been a danger to law enforcement, just as it has been a danger to all of mankind since the beginning of time. Since the very first police agency was formed in the 1800s, corruption has been widespread. The 19th century was an era in which politics played a very large role in police forces. Various political parties essentially had some police departments in their pockets, and as long as officers served to further those political parties’ agendas, the officers’ continued employment was guaranteed. Since politicians have not always been known for being straight-laced, one can easily see how corruption within police departments became prevalent. Since officers were not serving the people, but rather the political elite, their motives were constantly in question. It was not long before politicians began employing police officers to overlook and even protect their illicit activities. Through this practice, officers began to see the potential monetary and political benefits of allowing and participating in certain illegal actions. Even after the establishment of countermeasures such as police commissions, civil service exams, and legislative changes, corruption remained rampant. This corruption was perhaps best exemplified by none other than the actions of many officers within the Rampart Division of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Safety is the overall goal for laws for things to run smoothly as they can to prevent crime because without them there would be chaos. That is why general deterrence is a positive outcome for the most. This concept is mentioned in the chapter “The nature and aims of criminal law” that mentions general deterrence, and special deterrence. In our criminal justice system general deterrence is helpful to a certain extent. Unfortunately general deterrence is not as helpful as it should be. General deterrence is helpful for example when an individual is acknowledged of a caution or warning sign when finding a parking downtown. The individual will be aware that there will be consequences (ticket) if parked in an area they are not allowed. In this film, however, the pre -crime team prevents crimes from happening , and catch the perpetrator in the act before committing the crime that they were originally going to commit. The reason it is reduced so much is because people understand their concept of law. In this film general deterrence, and special deterrence is a great example because perpetrators can’t get away with their illegal actions because their crime is predicted through their “perfect” unique
Over the course of the past fifty years there have been countless homicides across the entirety of the United States, all with their own purpose and methods of commission. While it is impossible to completely prevent homicides from happening in our current society by looking at the data as a whole and analyzing the various patterns and trends it follows we might be better able to explain and understand it. With understanding comes new ways of prevention and deterrence that should allow us to significantly decrease the rate of homicides in our nation for future generations to come. To demonstrate this, we will be looking at two datasets one of the National homicide rates of 1950-2010 and another dataset of homicide and Non-Negligent Manslaughter
Since the beginning of time, the United States’ Criminal Justice System (CJS) has been scrutinized and will continue to be. If significant changes were to occur within the CJS it could potentially take decades. Different persons, institutions, governments, and even departments within governments have different views; it is a natural occurrence. Thus, as with any subject matter, there are always controversies that cause disruption within society. Often, the controversies stem from the lack of understanding and the historical patterns of unsupported data.
With the past and current issues our country is having with law enforcement officials the ethical deliberations about corruptions is constantly examining the foundations of police ethics. The reasoning following public corruption indicates an underlying social institutional structure that our country has created. In 2006, Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa were convicted of racketeering, extortion, obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and murder charges. Louis and Stephen worked in the NYPD police department; however, they were actually working for the Lucchese crime family mafia. In 2001, Joseph Miedzianowski worked as both a police officer and a drug kingpin; therefore, he used his knowledge from both sides of his work to shake down drug dealers. From 1972 until 1991, Jon Burge oversaw the torture of hundreds of African American men with radiators, cigarettes, and electrocuted their testicles; therefore, in order to assure Chicago police department could get their confessions. During Hurricane Katrina Robert Gisevius, Kenneth Bowen, and Anthony Villavaso members of the New Orleans police department murdered an innocent sixteen-year-old James Brissette under a bridge. Situations like these are highly publicized and often lead the public to doubt our countries police department members. Corruption of ethics and morals within a police department is destructive, and can have a crippling effect on the police department’s organization. When an organization experiences a
From the first police station built in Boston to what is today's modern police force there has always been corruption inside the criminal justice system, whether it be something as little as a small bribe to look the other way, or something more serious like getting away with a major offense. The department of justice has had trouble from top to bottom with corruption and it has proven to be a difficult problem to fix. When policing in the U. S. were just starting out corruption and law bending was more prevalent but harder to see which Police officers who were following the rules and who was bending the law in their own favor to gain an advantage for themselves rather than looking out for the community as a whole. This is because when policing first started out there were limited officers, which meant less word of mouth and less people to respond to and
The movie Minority Report was a book before the movie. The movie is where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crime. Tom Cruise is head of the precrime unit and was accused of killing someone he hasn't even meat. In 50 years it think technology is going to take over most of the stuff. I think the teachers will be using a lot more technology with teaching kids. I also think kids will start using technology at a young age than we all did because there already starting to do that. Cell phones will for sure be more advanced than they already our hopefully. The technology presented in minority report represents what the united states will likely experience in 50 years.
