Scrooge is a rude, dismal man who hates mankind, and Christmas. During Christmastime there is a lot of charity and for being such a wealthy man that Scrooge is, he hates to give money to charity. He also thinks that Christmas is waste of time, and it could be used for
Dickens indirectly characterizes Scrooge in many ways in A Christmas Carol. He does this by showing how greedy, hateful, and cold hearted scrooge is. The first way he characterizes Scrooge is by showing how cold hearted he is. In A Christmas Carol dicken describes how scrooge's heart has froze. Dicken states “The cold within him froze”(621). Scrooge's heart cold he is to everyone and everything. Scrooge is so cold that his heart has froze.Scrooge is so cold towards everyone and thinks there is no reason to be happy. Making christmas especially not important to Scrooge. Since christmas is a holiday to be happy Scrooge thinks christmas is a waste of time and their is no reason to be marry. This is indirect characterizes towards scrooge because he is cold hearted.
In the beginning of the book, “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is a cold, selfish and greedy man. He owns a business and is rich, but never does anything good with his money and keeps it to himself. He thinks of Christmas as a useless holiday and does not care to talk or smile to anybody he sees. However, as the spirits of the past, present and future visit him, Scrooge becomes much kinder and wants to become a better person. He learns to care for others and becomes more engaged in his community.
Titus H Xiong A Christmas Carol Date - 03-28-24 Class - Hour 2A. In the text, “A Christmas Carol,” Scrooge was a negative, grumpy, malcontent, selfish, and greedy type of person, but after the meeting of three spirits throughout the next few nights, he was able to alter his fate. Throughout the early scenes of the book, Scrooge tends to be a very greedy and rude man. He told the people that homeless people can go to prison for shelter during the winter, he told his nephew being in love was the most ridiculous thing he's ever heard, and he just didn’t change his point of view no matter what. He was extremely stubborn!
Scrooge doesn’t like Christmas because he has negative memories associated with Christmas time. He also doesn’t like Christmas because he feels like money gets taken from his pocket with no work because his employees don’t have to work. Scrooge is very wealthy and didn’t like sharing to the poor not even the littlest of amount. Scrooge didn’t like that poor people to be grateful for what they got. He loved himself only and didn’t care about anyone, but himself.
Scrooge, for once is beginning to care for people, asking the spirit “....if Tiny Tim will live”. The emotions that Ebenezer Scrooge expresses indicates that he is starting to care for people and not just his property. Scrooge hopes that “....the child will be spared”, from the death that awaited him. Meaning Scrooge cares about whether Tiny Tim was going to die. He “hung his head to her his own words quoted by the Spirit”, and grieves when the Spirit reminds him of the decrease of surplus population. Dickens here tries to explain that Ebenezer does feel the same as he did before about his views of the population. At this moment, Ebenezer Scrooge begins to feel compassion towards
Eventually, Scrooge becomes a better person because of how these spirits help him see life. In the story of “A Christmas Carol” by Israel Horovitz, Scrooge had many changes, his life changed from a cold, cruel person into a kind, caring person. After meeting the Ghost Christmas Past, Scrooge remembered many things about his childhood which brought out his emotions. Scrooge was heartless and emotionless with no humanity and didn't care about family,
From the reading, I know that Scrooge is a dolorous and crabby man who is identified as all head no heart. A tight-fisted hand at the grindstone kind of man is he accounting for every sterling. I know he hates Christmas by the response he gave to his nephew when he came to ask Scrooge to join his family for dinner. Fred, his nephew, says to Scrooge, “Christmas a humbug, you don’t mean that , I am sure.” Scrooge replies, “I do.” “Merry Christmas! What right do you have to be merry?” Fred ignores Scrooge’s negative response and continues to spread his joy by asking his uncle to join his family for dinner. On page six when carolers visited at his door, “Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the fog and even more congenial frost.” The foggy frozen mist outside his office crept through the door to freeze his old features as it did his heart. That one of a kind man is very greedy and selfish. The text claims he is a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! Scrooge’s business partner Marley is “dead as a doornail!” Marley’s ghost appears within Scrooge’s door knocker one day. Scrooge is slightly freaked out by the fact that Marley’s ghost is at his house! He then asks the ghost who he is. The ghost immediately responds telling him to ask who he was. Marley’s ghost continuously asks Scrooge if he believes in him. Scrooge responds as if he does, but does not.
At first glance, you might think scrooge is and ordinary senior who owns a business and has quite a fortune, but once you look into his eyes you see how his soul is dark, small, crooked, shattered and beyond repair and clearly from a lost love. Might be the reason why he is so inconsiderate and he only cares about
Have you ever met someone who hated Christmas. Well in a “Christmas Carol”is about a man who hates Christmas. The story takes place eve until the day after Christmas. The three spirits visits Scrooge to teach him about the meaning of Christmas. Scrooge transformers over the course of the play because of what the spirits show him: he changes from a miser to a philanthropist.
Throughout the novel “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens shows that the business of being human is more about money, and work than having relationships with others. In the novel, Scrooge is a man that means business, he only focuses on money and work and doesn’t take the time to have relationships with others like he should. There are many examples that Scrooge values money more than relationships in the novel “A Christmas Carol,” but I am only going to talk about some of them.
Scrooge is a symbol of the Victorian aristocracy who viewed the poor as a scourge upon the earth and thought the world would better if they died, as Scrooge alludes to in the Carol
Scrooge is very inconsiderate of others, and accordingly to the text on page one, stave one it said that “ No wind blew was bitterer than he”, and he was a person who did not believe in the Christmas spirit until a trio of ghosts shows him his past, present, and future. According to the text the
The text explicitly states Scrooge, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, clutching, covetous, old sinner has passed away. According to the text, he despises many things such as happiness, humor, and even Christmas. From the reading, I know that he is depressed all the time, consequently his mental state has led him to call other people stupid, dumb, and idiots. On page three, in the conversation with his nephew Fred, Scrooge insults his nephew about marrying and loving his wife. The text states, that he also “seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to the frost and even more congenial frost.” From the reading I know that Scrooge isn’t a people person and is very down about life. Based on the text he doesn’t really like being around them. For example Scrooge didn’t donate any money to the poor, and blew off his nephew about spending Christmas with them. In the text it states that there is no wind as bare as Scrooge, this means he doesn't really care or doesn't have many feelings.
Christmas is the time of year where everyone seems to be happy no matter what is going on currently in the world around them. But not for Ebenezer Scrooge. Everyone makes mistakes, but some that Scrooge had made, made a big impact on his life. Because of his lack to spread kindness and charity, Scrooge’s consequences were three lovely visits from the Spirit of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come that made Scrooge reflect on his previous decisions so he can have an even greater future. When Scrooge’s partner, Marley, passes away, he lives an even more greedy and selfish life, finding another reason to strongly hate Christmas. Thus one part of why his poor action will provide a future consequence. Secondly, since Scrooge had been so selfish to everyone, including the whole town of London, it is pretty certain that all of London dislikes Scrooge. Although the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come shows Scrooge that if he does indeed stay selfish, he most certainly will not be missed when he passes away. Lastly, his mistake in life was from his past when he decides to worry and obsess over making money and being successful rather than making sure he and his fiance’s future was more secure rather than secure finances. A Christmas Carol displays actions and consequences depend on one's own actions and decisions whether good or bad.
