Mary as a Disciple (Mariology)
Mary was the mother to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and has been a focus of theological discussion since about the second century. Mary comes from a long line of women in the bible. Prototypes, if you will. These women throughout the Old Testament were chosen by God. This gave way to Mary becoming the “God bearer.” A title that was given to her by the Council of Ephesus in 431 C.E. This is obviously where all theological debate dealing with Mariology comes from. To Catholics, Mary is a sign of hope in this fading world. To protestant Christians, Mary is also known as the mother of God. However, many protestant theologians believe that Mary should be honored but within certain limits. The Old Testament in the Holy Bible specifically says in Exodus 34:14, “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” . In the New Testament it says in 1 John 5:21, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols”. Martin Luther (a German professor of Theology, and founder of the Lutheran Church) was quick to say that Mary should be honored but to only what is fitting. Karl Barth (a reformed protestant theologian) explained that through Mary, Jesus was human, and through Jesus, she is the divine mother of God, and is full of grace that was still given to her by God the Father. Avery Dulles talks of models that churches should strive to uphold, and Mary (mother of God) resembles the church of Servant, Community,
Throughout history, people have used paintings and art as a tool to express their religious beliefs and values. Illustrations depicting the Virgin Mary and child, often referred to as Madonna and Child, are one of the most recurring images in Christian and European Art through the ages. Though these paintings and sculptures may have similarities in their iconography and style each work of art varies based on the different artists’ and time periods. Two paintings that portray these features currently reside in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The first, Virgin and Child by Rogier van der Wyden, was originally painted after 1454. In the painting, the Virgin Mary is holding Christ against her shoulder as he twists around to face toward the viewers. The second painting is Virgin and Child with a Donor, painted by Antoniazzo Romano and originally painted c. 1480. In this painting, Virgin Mary is supporting Christ who seems to be standing and includes a figure of a man with his hands crossed in prayer. While both paintings depict the mother and child, there are both similarities and differences in style and portrayal. In this paper, I will thoroughly examine these traits, as well as address the similarities and differences associated with the two paintings. This analysis will be done by using information gained from reading Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, in class lectures from ARTH 1381 Art and Society Renaissance to Modern and ARTH 1300 Ways of Seeing Art, and close visual
Her undying passion and faith in God contributed towards her vocation which inspired others. From birth till death Mary has been a significant figure in the church’s history.
When discussing the Bible’s New Testament, there are several individuals aside from Jesus that gander a lot of attention. It is not uncommon to hear pastors and priest preaching about the disciples that walked with the messiah during his time of great works during a Sunday service. There are many lessons to be learned from the experiences of and trails faced by the men that knew best. However, even though the Bible is considerable a masculine text, there are many notable women sprinkled throughout it. Most notable, of course, would be the mother of Jesus, Mary. She made several appearances throughout the Gospel from the moment the angel came to her and said “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28) to let her know that she was going to be the mother of the “Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:32) to the moment she stood witness to the crucifixion of that Son. Today, after Jesus, Mary – sometimes also called The Virgin Mary – is among those most revered in the Bible. However, she is not the only Mary to have close ties to the Biblical savior. There are actually at least three other Marys to walk along side with Jesus at some point, but none more conversational than Mary Magdalene.
Later, in 1888 Mary received a scholarship to attend Scotia Seminary, a school for African American girls in Concord, North Carolina. She was strongly impacted by both black and white teachers there and met some of the people in which she would work closely later. Mary values her studies, however, it did not hinder her from developing into a lovely dancer and a lasting love of music. She was very energetic and alert. From here she began to grow very popular. Her classmates admired her leadership and took her as their role model. Mary graduated in 1893, she proceeded her studies at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago,
For this discussion, you will apply either psychoanalytic or Adlerian theory to the client Mary (see the case study narrative The Case of Mary in the Resources). Specify how the theory conceptualizes Mary's problem, identify key concepts that can be applied, and discuss two specific interventions you would use with Mary. Identify a limitation of applying the theory to this case. According to psychoanalytical theory, human behavior is determined by irrational forces, which evolve during the first 6 years of life (Corey, 2013).
Mary, whose husband owns their farm, is one of the better-off people in colonial Long Island. How good is her life compared to the average working American’s today?
The ghostlike, unfinished portrait of a girl believed to be Mary, Queen of Scots has been found beneath the 16th-century portrait of a person wearing a black jacket, per new analysis.
When Mary and I met up this week the first thing she said was she wanted to talk about her work with the ERA some more. She told me that after reading the adamant it really ignited something within her and that she couldn’t understand why it was so difficult for women to be treated the equally as everyone else. She work only green and white for five years and for two years she picketed at a mormon temple in Bellevue, Washington. She also when to Utah as an ERA missionary to talk with women about equal rights. She said she continued on with her Civil Disobedience and modeled her behavior after Alice Paul one of the founders of the National Woman’s Party.
Mary would do anything to become Queen or be recognized. Queen Mary was illegitimate by her father Henry VII.
If Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
People are raised into religion based on culture and family. I believed the Virgin Mary was a God able to answer prayers and have the same powers as God. In the past, I was a Catholic and viewed Virgin Mary to be the Queen of Heavens. She was very special in the religious life of my Mexican heritage. Her image is an important symbol to Mexico, so I grew up to worship her. I was told by my family she has the compassion, the sympathy, and the loving kindness of God. Therefore, I did many things to receive this feeling. I used to pray to both Mary and God to help me through my difficulties and I wore a rosary to honor her. Everything told as
“The Company of Wolves” by Angela Carter, “The Outsider” by H.P. Lovecraft, and “Mary’s Child” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm deal with protagonists who experience a loss of innocence because of a surrender to their sources of temptation. The stories begin with the characters as sheltered beings who are given experiences in which they face conflicts regarding attaining something they desire. Red Riding Hood is a virgin, which is as explicitly innocent as a character can be described. The narrator of “The Outsider” has never left his castle or interacted with another human being, so he is naive to what the outside world is like. Also, the protagonist in “Mary’s Child” lives in Heaven, which is the epitome of paradise, so she too only knows of a pure and sheltered life before her conflict.
Her accomplishments were achieved by writing her books about women's rights and how women are being treated unfairly because of their gender. She also wanted woman to receive education too. I think this person is considered an important historical figure because she spoke out about the unfair treatment of women and how education is important to women too. She wrote many popular books, including A Vindication of the rights of Woman showcasing her opinion on society. Mary is considered the “Mother of feminism” because she was one of the first women to speak out against the unfair treatment of woman.
Mary has appeared 9 major approved times by the Catholic Church. She appears in times of trouble to urge people to recommit themselves to the church and inspire the conversion of sinners to Christianity.
Mary, also known as St. Mary the Virgin, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Mary, Mary Mother of God or the Virgin Mary is believed by many to be the greatest of all Christian saints. The Virgin Mother "was, after her Son, exalted by divine grace above all angels and men."
