Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Struggles for the Fight to Equality
The morning of January 15, 1929 marks the birth of one of the most influential and inspiring leaders in history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had lost his life while trying to get rid of racism and achieve equality. He was a Baptist minister and a social activist that led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Dr. King was born in Atlanta, Georgia and was brought up in a middle-class family. Michael King Jr. followed the lead of his father and adopted the name Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was the middle child of Michael King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had an older sister, Willie Christine and a younger brother, Alfred Daniel Williams King. Dr. King married Coretta Scott, an aspiring singer and musician. Martin Luther King Jr. is persistent because he continued to fight for his and his people to obtain racial equality. Although, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. went to jail numerous times he did not give up on all those people who had high hopes on him. The author states, "King and the other leaders were tried the last week of April and sentenced to five days in jail..." (Shuker 84). By being persistent Dr. King showed us that we can attain even the toughest goals. These activists had won some significant victories; among the most notable was the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education, which held that state laws requiring black students and white students to attend different schools were unconstitutional. The city of Montgomery lifted the law mandating segregated public transportation. In 1996 Samuel Mohammed, a resident of West Palm Beach community, kicked down the door of an abandoned house within his neighborhood, that was used as a drug house, spread lighter fluid and started a fire. The night he set the fire he was never far away from the scene. He stood by and watched as the fire and at the time he deemed appropriate he called the police and the fire station. In response for setting the fire he was arrested on the charge of arson.
