Mark Strand's Eating Poetry

Mark Strand is an American poet who was born in Canada. His favorite expression was "eat poetry, not meat loaf." (Kushner). His poem "Eating Poetry" (1968) is very unusual and even surrealistic in some way. Mark Strand expresses his love to a poetry by comparing poetry to the cooking and eating food. He uses culinary and food related words to describe his joy from reading the poetry - “Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.” "Eating Poetry" is part of the very first book of Mark Strand. He also tries to interest the reader and show how it can be amazing to read the poetry. And Mark Strand chooses a very interesting and unusual ways to do that.

Mark Strand looks at the reading the poetry as food consumption process. Also, from the very first line we can see, that the poem is not going to be literal. In the next line – “There is no happiness like mine.” He talks about joy from consuming the poetry. In the third line after all our guesses and images in the head he tells us what he was doing - “I have been eating poetry.” Next line – “The librarian does not believe what she sees.” – author points out that “this is a forbidden joy, since these poems belong in the library.” (Kushner). The librarian is not sharing the joy of the speaker. “Her eyes are sad” – the librarian does not experience satisfaction from eating the poetry, she is sad. “and she walks with her hands in her dress.” – she has a closed position “with her hands in in her dress”. As all the poem to this point assumed open minded attitude to understand and experience the poem, but the librarian does not want to accept it. “The poems are gone.” – is an example of the standard strand. “Strand is a poet who likes to think about absence, whether of other people or objects, or of himself” (Kushner). “The light is dim. The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.” – here
