The temperature plummets, the hair on your skin rises, you feel movement behind you. As you turn around to see what is there a figure emerges and you see a women with a knife in her back. Renowned Childhood Psychologist, Malcolm Crowe(Bruce Willis) is trying to make up for a past patient who despite his efforts remained mentally ill. He meets a boy labeled a “freak”, Cole Sear(Haley Joel Osment), who seems to be in an identical situation as the past patient. As Malcolm(Willis) tries to help Cole(Osment) his marriage becomes compromised and his life aside from Cole seems to be one foot in the grave. Throughout the film Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) along with many other characters, are shadowed along with the surroundings in the scene. Shyamalan ensures the fated situation by hanging a dark cloud casting a shadow over the deceased characters head. However, once they have fulfilled their destiny the scene as well as their ‘physical’ bodies is casted a new light that is brighter and more clam. Shyamalan uses many different lighting techniques that allow the viewer to pick up on subtle hints that progress the evolvement of the storyline and theme. One example of this is when a new light is shed on Malcolm's situation that shows the personal battles he is fighting along with the battle of keeping his marriage intact. In the shot Malcolm’s face is only lite by a candle, however his wife Ana(Olivia Williams) is fully lite. While Malcolm carries on with his monologue about his new patient,Cole, his figure remains poorly lit and you are never able to see his eye color, like you could Ana’s,(Shyamalan,28:30). This scene is crucial because of the lighting, it shows the fulfillment of each character’s life. Once the person's job in life is done the negative light seems to vanish and they are covered in a bright light that is warm and calming versus the one that suffocates
