The non-fictional book, “The Lost Children of Wilder; The Epic Struggle to Change Foster Care” written by a reporter of The New York Times Nina Berstein, is an inspiring story about the lack of proper funding and placement of children in the foster care system in New York City from before 1972 to today. This book in specifics focus ' on an attorney and child advocate Marcia Lowery who respectfully stood up to the entire foster care system of New York City using the face of then, thirteen year old Shirley Wilder and her soon born son Lamont Wilder.

The author, Nina Biehal, tells of the treatment in foster care and the need for correction in her article, "Maltreatment in Foster Care: A review of the evidence." The author gives many facts about how the government needs to change the level of care provided for the children. This article is more of a constant reminder of how much still needs to change and the level of care offered to children of abuse today. Unlike the article by authors Kristen Turney and Christopher Wilderman, which bases their article on the number of children in foster care receiving mental health care, Biehal gives evidence to support the problems that result from being in foster care. My essay can use this article to paint a picture of the number of children in detrimental conditions and how foster care developed problems with their system to support my argument.

Over 600,000 children in the United States are in the foster care system. Reasons include, abuse, neglect and abandonment. These children lack nurturing environments and stable homes. Children within the foster care system have more mental, physical and developmental problems. It is imperative to understand the challenges children entering the foster care system are exposed to. The system works best when children are provided nurturing, and short-term care until they can be placed back home safely or a permanent adoptive family. For many children, however, the stay is longer, with 30% remaining in temporary care for over two years. Staying in the system is detrimental to the child’s well-being. The foster care system is an unsuccessful intervention for children that cultivates development, health and mental issues.

In todays’ society many Americans never think about our foster care system. Foster care is when a child is temporarily placed with another family. This child may have been abused, neglected, or may be a child who is dependent and can survive on their own but needs a place to stay. Normally the child parents are sick, alcohol or drug abusers, or may even be homeless themselves. We have forgotten about the thousands of children who are without families and living in foster homes. Many do not even know how foster care came about. The Foster Care System with the kids who are in it is a massive social issue that America is facing today. There are more than 640,000 foster children in the United States every year. There are 23,000 foster children living in group homes at one time. There are 32,000 who live in institutions, and twenty-seven states do not meet federal abuse and neglect standards. The Fosters is a T.V. show on ABC Family that brings up the topics of parenthood, divorce, stepfamilies, and sexuality. The Fosters isn’t your normal family T.V. show. It’s about a lesbian couple name Lena and Stef, that are raising five teenage children. One of the kids is Stef’s real son Brandon, and Jesus & Mariana, Jude are adopted by Stef and Lena, and Callie is a foster child living with them. Throughout the show we see the family go through everyday struggles of a real family, but at the end of the day everyone is there for each other.

The children are often moved around to multiple foster chimes in a short amount of time, unable to feel as if they are wanted. Kaylee a foster kid said “It is hard to be moved around all the time. Permanence is important because then we can feel like we belong and settle, rather than get moved around and fell worthless because we feel that no one wants us.” She shows that foster children don't get the emotional support they need from having a long term, stable family. Without a long term family many who age out of the system don't get the financial support to substance themselves.

Typically, a person gets placed in foster care because they come from an unsafe home environment and are unable to care for themselves on their own (Cutler). The experiences of every child in foster care are different because there are so many variables that contribute to whether or not a particular foster home is a good fit for the child: the biological parents, the foster parents, the circumstances of the placement, and the foster child themselves.
