Negi’s experience growing up in Puerto Rico and living in Brooklyn made her an independent and outspoken person. It also made her realize that she could be anything she wanted as long as she worked hard and got a good education. Negi was never a very independent person but towards the end of the book she learned that she needed to be independent, self sufficient and hard working to get ahead in life. Moving to New York really enabled her to do this because no one knew her, she didn’t have a reputation and she could make a new identity. In the book Santiago uses a happy and cheerful tone to describe Puerto Rico and a more confused and wondering tone to describe Brooklyn. Living in Macun, Negi was very isolated from the rest of the world she …show more content…
Moving to New York really enabled her to do this because no one knew her, she didn't have a reputation and she could make a new identity. After Negi and Mami had a fight about their lives in Brooklyn Mami said “ I’m not working this hard so that you kids can end up working in factories all your lives. you study, get good grades, and graduate from High school so you can have a profession, not just a job” (Santiago 246) This quote is very powerful because it shows that there are so many opportunities in this country and Negi should take them before it is too late. This is shown in the book very vividly, when Mami is saying this the tone of the passage is very urgent and a little sad, this is the way Santiago describes Brooklyn. This is the point where Negi realizes if she wants to get out of Brooklyn and do something with her life she is going to have to take those opportunities, it is going to be hard but with a lot of work and dedication she can eventually do it she is going to try to prove everyone wrong and get a good job and make a good life for herself. She is not going to be held back by the traditional roles that were forced upon her that women should not get jobs. After their last conversation about achieving a better life and working hard Mami encouraged Negi and said “That’s what you have to do in this country anyone willing to work hard can get ahead.” (Santiago 246) this quote shows a major transition and important transition. Negi went from working hard just to be a good kid and making her mom happy, to working hard so she can make a good life for herself and her
In the beginning of the story Nea saw the world differently from how her mother and her sister see it. Nea didn't know much of the world but the one she knows of where she had grown up in. During the story Nea tries to understand why Sourdi made the choices Nea thought it was wrong. For example in May-Lee Chai story Nea tries to save Sourdi from being harassed, she thought she was doing the right thing by trying to stab the man that was bothering Sourdi, but instead Sourdi and her mother got mad at Nea for trying to save her. In the short story “Saving Sourdi” by May-Lee Chai, the author use Nea’s point of view to show how a bond between sisters can grow farther apart through time and maturity. Nea is the younger sister in short story and Sourdi is the older one “escaping” Nea. By placing the point of view on Nea the reader is given the perspective of the sister that is naïve and sampling does know about life. This way, the author is able to make her readers emotionally connect with Nea because the reader directly knows Nea thoughts and fears, ultimately sympathizing with her through the point of view of Nea. Once the readers connects with Nea, the theme of the story is able to be recognized by the readers.
Puerto Rico's local Taíno population whose hunter and gatherer predecessors settled the island over 1,000 years previously the Spanish arrived called it Borinquén, and referred to themselves as boricua, a term that is as yet utilized today. Amid his second expedition to the Indies in 1493, Christopher Columbus restored a few Taíno prisoners to Borinquén and asserted the island for Spain, calling it San Juan Bautista. In 1508, Juan Ponce de León established the main European settlement, Caparra, close to a bay on the island's northern drift; Caparra was renamed Puerto Rico or "rich port" in 1521.
The commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico), known to most Americans as simply Puerto Rico, exists as one of two territories owned by the United States1. Being a territory of the United States, Puerto Ricans possess common citizenship, currency, and defense. However, even though Puerto Ricans are United States citizens they do not pay any kind of federal income taxes. Therefore, they cannot vote in presidential elections. They have established their own constitution, and have a greater amount of independence than possessions. Although
Napolean Bonaparte once stated, “A leader is a dealer in hope.” Hoover and Roosevelt had very different viewpoints on how to handle the Great Depression. Hoover preferred “rugged individualism,” and FDR preferred “helping hand” philosophies. Hoover believed in assisting business in hope that this support would create a trickle down impact which would lead to investment and more jobs. FDR, on the other hand, wanted to provide people with jobs to increase confidence and correcting failures in certain economic institutions, leading to a bubble up scenario. It is ironic that Hoover knew how it felt to suffer in poverty as a child, yet FDR better handled the job of reassuring citizens that he was the man to get the nation out of its slump.

Puerto Rico is an island that is impacted by not having enough land for cultivation. The Three thousand four hundred and ninety-two square miles of this island is about seventy-five percent hills or mountains (Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States b). With the large amount of land consisting of hill or mountains, Puerto Rico has limited amounts of natural resources. While under Spanish colonial rule, the island was largely neglected because of its limited mineral resources. Following the Spanish-American war in 1898, the U.S. took over control of the island. The U.S. found itself in control of an island that produced small scale amounts of sugar and coffee. The U.S would then expand the sugarcane operations and establish markets to use as a viable trade resource.
Since Puerto Rico was first discovered by Christopher Columbus on November 19, 1493, and Spanish colonization ensued in 1508, Puerto Rico has experienced all of these pressures of identity and culture.
Puerto Rico, whose word meaning is “rich port” in Spanish, is a beautiful Island located in the middle of the Caribbean. Its strategic location made it a must have territory to the Spaniards who colonized it over four hundred years before the United States took a special interest. It all started in the year 1898, with the Treaty of Paris Puerto Rico now is property of the United States. After centuries of being led by Sevilla and Madrid, Puerto Rico was now forced to look upon Washington. The series of events leading the Spanish-American War changed Puerto Rico permanently. From changing the Island’s name from Porto Rico to Puerto Rico to Americanizing the Puerto Rican people in all ways possible, the acquisition of Puerto Rico from the United States had numerous economic, social and political impacts.

I remember the day we arrived there and settled into a hotel to live temporarily. I wasn’t sure why I couldn’t understand my favorite cartoons anymore. A man with a daughter my age took me to school during the first week and I couldn’t understand that man either. My parents explained to me that they spoke Spanish and soon enough in school, I was learning the language.
