The History of Life Coaching and Why You Should Care
Life coaching does not have a precise date marking its beginnings since humans developed the innate ability to gain knowledge and enlightenment back at the beginning of civilization. However, the theoretical origins of life coaching can be traced to a number of disciplines including business management, sports psychology and targeted individual development techniques such as primal therapy and sensitivity training. The idea took off as recent as the 90’s with the entrenchment of social imagination as one of the core values defining the science and art of coaching. This development is attributed to the advances made in the 70’s and 80’s, when this form of coaching took the self help and business dimension.
The term life coaching is currently unregulated; this means people can use the term at their discretion. However, there have been attempts by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council and the International Coach Federation to come up with an operative code of conduct. Coaching is a useful way to develop people’s skills and abilities, and of boosting performance. It can also help deal with issues and challenges before they become major problems. Coaching typically begins with a personal interview with the employee to assess the situation, review current opportunities and challenges. After the interview, priorities for action are established along with specific desired outcomes. Individuals may also be asked to complete specific action items in a certain period of time that support the achievement of desired goals. Resources may also be provided such as articles, checklists and assessments.

Mayella Ewell is a very lonely and shameful woman who uses the hatred of her father and abuse to wrongfully accuse a black man of rape. Her race, class, and gender gives her an ultimate advantage over Tom Robinson.
Since the beginning of time people have changed the world. They influence people to do the right thing and stand up for what they believe in. Frederick Douglass was a man who helped abolish slavery by informing others about the truth behind slavery and inspiring them to demand its end. The challenges he faced from growing up as a slave gave him the courage and strength to do the amazing things he has done in his lifetime. Frederick Douglass was the most influential African American in the 19th century because his moving speeches and prominent writing opened people’s eyes to the inhumanity in the world.
I find this an excellent definition & explanation of what coaching is because to me coaching is about facilitating others to find their own paths through life, assisting them to reach their own answers & way forward by using open questioning, active listening & feeding back,

Coaching is the art of facilitating another person’s learning, development and performance. Through coaching people are able to find their own solutions, develop their own skills and change their own behaviors and attitudes.
While conducting a research on the need for life mentorship, CFO Magazine set out a free online research questionnaire with the question "Does everyone need a life coach?" The questionnaire was emailed to random people from all walks of life to state whether they felt the need to have a life coach in their lives and why. Surprisingly, over 95% of the respondents did state that everyone needs a life coach. However, they were a little bit hesitant in paying their life coaches. Why? “Still Life with flowers” by Vincent Van Gogh was made in 1888. In this artwork, the first thing that I recognized was the flower vase. The flower vase contains many pink flowers and along with its long and sharp leaves. The vase is colored black and white with its top half having green and red decoration on it. Next to the vase are two books laying on top of one another. The book on top is yellow while the one below is tan. These objects are on top of a brown table. The background is plane with only one color being green. After looking at the work carefully, it reminds me of my own childhood.
The goal setting phase of a Life Coaching session is crucial as it determines how one acquires the change and sought out success from the coach. After establishing that change is necessary and doable, the next step is the formation of a realistic plan with attainable goals. Author Gary R. Collins (2009) delineates, “Attainable goals are specific rather than vague. They persist longer if there can be consistent and accurate feedback on one’s progress” (p. 63). The Life Coach ascertains from the client problem areas, challenges, and obstacles that the client and Life Coach perceive and cognize as hindrances to augmentation and rectification. Moreover, one incorporation to the course of action to consider in the goal settings is “baby steps”.
Coaching can take many forms, life coaching, business coaching, performance coaching etc. As with mentoring and counselling it is about helping the individual to gain self awareness, but it is goal focused and action is required so that the individual can move forward. Reflecting daily upon these values will increase my ability to articulate a holistic coaching philosophy. A personal coaching philosophy can be used as a tool itself, enabling a coach to question their practices and develop their own understanding and knowledge (Nash, et al., 2008). Already being interested in Sports Psychology, the reflective learning practice was already something I was aware of and keen to know more about.
Little to no empirical data exist on the impact of life coaching and achieving goals (Grant, A. M.). Goals are critical factor when it comes to building long term success in life. This paper will address explaining the questioning strategy used to determine the goals of clients, describe challenges faced in the application of the skills learned and overcoming those challenges, describing client’s reaction to roadmap for success, and recommended resources and continuation of services for the client.
