Liberal art help the student to have a better understanding of the world around them. It is important for any professional to have broad general knowledge, this will give more critical thinking and creative in the different situation of their professional live (). For example, an engineer will only be in contact the most part of the time with machines or equipments and won’t be interact with other people. The class of job does not matter because in either way it will be end it up with people interactions. This explain the reason why Ungar described liberal arts as “a conservative approach to preparation for life” (). With this statement true, it is more than obvious than the liberal arts should taught with more emphasis and deep in high school
There is not just one study of “liberal arts,” but a broad variety of options and fields, from history to creative writing to philosophy. The entire point of a liberal arts education is to provide a wide knowledge base of education that develops skills needed for almost any career. Communication, analysis, and debate coexist in every field imaginable, from science to social studies, but liberal arts degrees create true polymaths. Those well-versed in many subjects can cross-apply their knowledge to form creative solutions to problems plaguing the Earth. With a world criss-crossed by party lines, tribal lines, and ideological lines, someone has to understand all the sides in order to rejoin the divisions. There is a broad variety of opportunities to mend these tears, from diplomacy to nonprofit activism, from cultural studies to linguistics. All that matters is a willingness to be open and
A liberal arts education in the 21st century is basically referring to college studies that provides general knowledge and helps to develop intellectual ability. Liberal arts education is the type of education to prepare one for many fields in today's workplace. As Jamila Lyiscott stated in the video having a great education is important. Lyiscott stated to have a great education is to be able to be articulate when communicating with people. While obtaining a great education provides people to set their goals in life, no matter if it is short or long term goals. Everybody, not just college students, should plan their life out through short and long term goals.
His heart piercing words elucidate why education is essential to us. Even the low income first generation students, are supposed to have the right to access to liberal education. On page 192, Sanford J. Ungar responded to one of the conventional wisdom, that first generation students are supposed to focus on starting a business not attending a college as it is expensive to afford liberal arts. Besides getting a liberal art degree, college life is also a way to create golden connections that will help in the future. It is a good social experience and networking opportunities that will carry us into the future in terms of starting businesses. In my own opinion, liberal arts offer a platform for students to explore and discover their hidden
A topic in higher education that has gained much attention is whether people should go to college. Many people have misconceptions about college that it is a waste of time, leaves people with debt, leaves people unprepared for work etc. However, while there are people attending college, many don’t value a liberal arts education. A liberal arts education is a form of education where students are educated in the social sciences, the natural sciences and the humanities. The main misperception people have about a liberal arts college is the hard time finding jobs.
When I first heard of liberal arts schools, I thought of institutions like Julliard where students who want to study the arts attend. I pictured students painting on canvas, dancers leaping across stage, and musicians composing beautiful music. Since beginning my college visitations, I have come to realize that is far from what you will see at liberal arts colleges such as Loras. A liberal arts education not only touches on the arts but also the areas of history, science, math, language, and several more. Throughout my first thirteen years of schooling, I have taken classes covering many different subjects. Liberal arts schools continue to encourage one to learn about topics in various areas of study in order to obtain a more rounded education.
The author concludes that the debate of liberal education will continue throughout generations to come. That students should immerse themselves within liberal arts not to just make a living, but to become more complex and diverse, to find creative ways to solve new problems, and develop as a person as a person. (Ugar 196) By incorporating the gained knowledge of the liberal arts, undergraduates can pass it down to the future
I strongly agree with Alan Wildman’s article “We ignore the liberal arts at our peril” about the significance of a liberal art degree as the liberal arts and humanities maintain a crucial role in creating an active society that inspires and advances throughout different academic fields. Graduates of humanities and liberal arts have a better understanding of cultures and history and thus it creates a more open minded society and inspires scholars in other academic fields and prevents the society from repeating previous mistakes. Moreover, the liberal arts influence is the foundation of other fields as it provides the chance of thinking more actively and thus creates more original ideas that can be applied in other careers. For instance, authors write about fascinating gadgets in their fiction novels, which inspires scientists and engineers to create these inventions in real life.
A liberal arts education consists of many things. It can include literature, foreign languages, history, philosophy, religion, mathematics, science, and also psychology. Every area of study benefits each student, regardless of their major. Students learn from every course they take.
Getting a liberal arts degree is going above and beyond normal expectations in today’s society. It is challenging the mind, forcing a person to think in a different way than most people think. It allows the person to see the world in a completely different perspective than the norm, seeing everything with a more open mind. However, a liberal arts degree can only go so far. Knowing liberal arts broadens a person’s knowledge with real world issues, but it will not do much in the occupational field.
The goal of a liberal arts education is to create a well-rounded, educated individual. Expanding and adjusting a liberal arts education to meet the requirements of an ever changing society does in no way hinder this goal. In all actuality, expanding a liberal arts education to require new subjects would simply create more well-rounded individuals. Furthermore, changing the liberal arts curriculum is nothing new. The original curriculum developed by the Greeks only included grammar, rhetoric, and logic and was soon expanded during the medieval times to include four new topics (Haidar). Changing the curriculum becomes necessary when new skill sets are required in society. Since the last time the liberal arts curriculum was adapted, technology has expanded and with it new skills are required of employees. With the gap that exists between what skills are necessary and what is
In my own words, the Liberal arts embraces so many parts of the world and the lives we live that it is one of the most important studies that humanity can embark upon. Liberal arts fits into my life by helping me to look outside of myself and see the world around me. It helps me to treat others well because I often use my humanity to keep in mind that we are just that human. Natural sciences open my eyes to everything from how my food is grown to staying green and keeping the earth
These tough and complex subjects can be an optional subject, and especially brilliant students can choose these at high school level. As a result, the task of getting familiar with liberal art education will be achieved in high school by avoiding four year of college, and high school students will be equipped with critical thinking and analytic skills. Comparing the American high school from Germany high school, Ungar appear to dissatisfy current high school curriculum, which further support Murrays arguments of introducing liberal art education at high school level. Ungar says, “We should recognize, however, that a secondary education in some systems––say, those that follow the model of the German Gymnasium––often includes much that is left
A liberal arts education encourages freedom by allowing students to grow individually and academically. Before I read the summer reading packet, I did not know this. By reading the packet, I understand what it means to be liberally educated at Loras College. The freedom and growth that I will experience through the liberal arts at Loras will allow me to become better-rounded as an individual. Because of this, I will have learned how to be a critical thinker and learner, see the whole picture of why I am learning what I am learning, and connect and use what I have learned to other aspects of life. I believe that through the liberal arts I will learn how see deeper into what I have learned, know the true reason of why I am learning what I am learning, expanding my knowledge by having a well-rounded education, and use that in real-world situations to better myself and society.
Colleges should require students to take liberal arts classes but the students should be able to choose which liberal arts class they would like to take. Whether a student takes a literature, art, history, or even a philosophy class, they will benefit from it in many ways. Students learn a lot from practical and technical training but they could learn so much more with liberal arts classes. Taking liberal arts classes can help a student develop grit, relate to real life situations, and help overall development.
Liberal Arts also nurture other hidden talents that the student might not have realize before attending that said liberal art college.
