The two articles, “ Lasers: The Light Fantastic!” and “ The Steam Engine Powers a Revolution” both provide strong points why these technological advances revolutionized the world. The two articles at hand, although discussing two entirely different advances in technology, both discuss inventions that greatly impacted technology. The laser which was invented in the late 1950s is used today in scientific research, medicine, industry, and daily life. The steam engine which revolutionized the 21st century by providing efficient means of transportation of goods across both land and water. Those are only a few good points of many to come about the technological advances mentioned in the two articles.

Quicker transport is an obvious long term effect as because of the invention many years ago, we now have quicker transport on land for both people and goods. Climate change was a negative as it largely increased levels of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Today, in our society, most people use our abundance of technology without thinking about where any of it came from. For thousands of years man has been creating technology innovations and through the decades, we have made much progress to make our lives easier. For example, the 1910s brought about stainless steel, the 1920s brought Henry Ford´s automobile, the 1930s yielded the jet engine. But, nothing had a more profound effect on the future than the technology brought about in the 1940s.
In the book “ The Scientific Revolution: A Very Short Introduction”, Lawrence Principe discusses the general occurring events of the scientific revolution, and overviews various in-depth details in relation to those events. People at the time highly focused on the meanings and causes of their surrounds, as their motive was to “control, improve and exploit” (Principe 2) the world. In his work, Principe has successfully supported the notion that the Scientific Revolution stood as a period in time where one's innovation would drive improvements towards change and continuity of future innovations, along with changes of tradition. His statement is strongly backed by his detailed and particular order of events throughout the book. Nevertheless, certain details that lead beyond the necessary background are found, as they do not appertain to the general line of the book, but rather for background knowledge.
The steel industry was also revolutionized through the use of the steam engine. Steel, smelted from iron, was beaten, rolled or shaped on steam-powered machines.
