The two articles, “ Lasers: The Light Fantastic!” and “ The Steam Engine Powers a Revolution” both provide strong points why these technological advances revolutionized the world. The two articles at hand, although discussing two entirely different advances in technology, both discuss inventions that greatly impacted technology. The laser which was invented in the late 1950s is used today in scientific research, medicine, industry, and daily life. The steam engine which revolutionized the 21st century by providing efficient means of transportation of goods across both land and water. Those are only a few good points of many to come about the technological advances mentioned in the two articles.
The word laser is an acronym for, “Light Amplified by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation”, this means that all the lights in a laser have the same wavelength. Within a century of the laser being invented it occupied a major role in scientific research, medicine, industry, and even daily life. Lasers are used in the medicine field for procedures such as, laser eye surgery, heart, stomach, and intestinal surgeries. These procedures laser procedures are said to be harmless. These negative effects could be violent or silent but deadly. The negative effects of the laser are extremely violent, there have been discoveries of laser guided bombs and missiles too. The steam engine negatively affects the world in a more silent way. The steam engine release harmful amounts of smoke that is horrible for the environment. There have been reports of so mch smoke in london that a new word had been created, smog.
