Kids will be kids” is a famous saying suggesting that bullying is a normal part of growing up. I was bullied as a kid and a primary school student. Being bullied left a negative impact on my stay in school. For example, it had an impact on my mental health, put fear in me and also affected my academic experience. These are some of the negative impacts of the bullying and as a result of that school authorities should find ways to reduce bullying in schools. The methods that should be used include rewarding positive behavior, giving students the opportunity to feel free voicing their concerns when being bullied and having a clear definition of bullying in high schools and college. Communication is the key to effective solution, when teachers have effective communication with their students they will more open to talk to them about their problems including bullying. As started by Stacie, (2007) the present study focuses on the effectiveness of group social skills interventions in reducing bullying and victimization in the middle school setting. The main objective was to determine if this was an effective method for reducing these behaviors within the middle school population. School officials referred students to social skills groups. Students were placed into groups by grade, and were assessed at pre-test and post-test. Students rated their level of social skills by completing the Social Skills Rating System and their bullying behaviors by completing the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire. School officials were asked to complete the Social Skills Rating System to rate students’ levels of social skills. While students did not report significant changes in their social skills, they did report a significant decrease in bullying behavior. Results revealed there were no statistically significant differences for gender or grade. having a classroom meeting is another way to build that communication it provide a way for students to talk about school-related issues beyond academics. These meetings can help teachers and parents stay informed about what’s going on at the school and in the child’s life, Students want to know that they’re truly being listened to. The reason bullying is such a wide spread epidemic is because the bullying is never handled properly even though there are many ways to intervene the situation. These skills and behaviors can be introduced to students in lessons and classroom discussions. Some of the intensive interventions consist of support to both victims and bullies through group therapy and individual counseling. Obtaining parent support for these children is a important component of intervention initiatives. The goals of these programs are to empower adults and children to take the appropriate steps to stop bulling when and where it occurs and to teach children positive behaviors and interpersonal skills. “Effective prevention efforts mobilize a school’s most vital resource- the students- to be a school’s most powerful force in fostering a caring culture in which all students can grow and learn”( Feinberg,2003).
Bullying is a problem that is on the rise in society; however, many individuals have a distorted view of what bullying entails. Usually when someone thinks of bullying, they assume that it is a standard part of a child’s life. This view, on the contrary, is erroneous. Bullying is actually abnormal behavior, many times, leaving victims with a dismantled self identity. Since some people do not understand the consequences of bullying, the actions of the bully often go unnoticed and are perceived as “kids being kids”. The issue of bullying goes deeper than that nevertheless. Despite the erroneous views that many individuals hold towards bullying, it is still a distortion of normal behavior in children.
One of the easiest ways in order to eliminate the frequency of bullying would be to implement very strong anti-bullying programs in schools, this is the place where many children spend most of their days aside from home, these programs should be effective on a various amount of cases. Michael Morrow did research on elementary school anti-bullying programs and wrote the article “Consultation in Bullying Prevention: An Elementary School Case Study.” This article looked at the various research that has been done on anti-bullying programs and the papers that have been written about it. “Multiple prevention programs have been developed and utilized around the world to address bullying in schools and many employ a schoolwide or whole-community approach. The Method of Shared Concern and the Support Group Approach are two similar school preventions that have had success. The Method of Shared Concern focuses on children being bullied and acting as bullies. The children being bullied can share their experiences in a comfortable and safe environment while the children who act as bullies are encouraged to recognize the suffering that they have inflicted upon their victims. Similar is the Support Group Approach, which focuses on bystanders and children involved in bullying. The purpose of this group is to work together to examine and determine a solution to end the victimization of an individual. A progress report, conducted within two years, concluded that almost 80 percent had immediate success and 14 percent had later success (Smith, Ananiadou, and Cowie 592). By using supportive approaches such as these, bullying can be reduced, and the effects of bullying limited. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. The purpose of this study is to identify the most prevalent forms of bullying on a high school campus and identify which strategies are most effective to prevent or respond to bullying. The study will also identify the most effective strategies to improve student achievement and attendance for those students who have experienced bullying. Students must feel safe to learn. Students who are bullied have a propensity to avoid the bullies; therefore, they choose not to attend school. Poor attendance often will result in poor grades and even dropping out of school.
