Bullying is a problem that is on the rise in society; however, many individuals have a distorted view of what bullying entails. Usually when someone thinks of bullying, they assume that it is a standard part of a child’s life. This view, on the contrary, is erroneous. Bullying is actually abnormal behavior, many times, leaving victims with a dismantled self identity. Since some people do not understand the consequences of bullying, the actions of the bully often go unnoticed and are perceived as “kids being kids”. The issue of bullying goes deeper than that nevertheless. Despite the erroneous views that many individuals hold towards bullying, it is still a distortion of normal behavior in children. There are many definitions that adequately define bullying; however, a simple definition is given by Kas Dekker, “Bullying is defined as a person being repeatedly exposed to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons and has difficulty defending him or herself.” (Dekker, 2013 pg 228) In this quote, Dekker is describing a power imbalance between the bully and the victim. In a power imbalance, the bully misuses their skills – whether strength, verbal, gestural, or relational – in order to either acquire their yearnings, or put another individual down. School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.

It comprises repeated acts over time and that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power with the more powerful individual or group abusing those who are less powerful. The power imbalance may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a target.

One report shows that one of three children were victims of bullying during some point in their life, and that 10-14% of all adolescents were victims of chronic bullying for at least six months prior to participating in the survey. Children who were victims of bullying are also found to be at a higher risk of diagnoses for anxiety disorders and depression during young and middle adulthood. These victims are reported to be more likely to have lower levels of general/physical health, and lower educational acquirements than young and middle-aged adults who were not bullied (Wolke & Lereya, 2015). Because bullying is such a prominent problem, citizens, policymakers, and social scientists alike, should feel or have some social and moral obligation to address, and hopefully avert bullying. The state of bullying, and how it is enacted, is constantly changing and adapting to social frameworks. Because bullies can adapt to social changes and regulations, we, as a society, should be equally adaptive in how we perceive, address, prevent, and punish bullying.

Lynette Mather stated that, “What if the kid you bullied at school grew up, and turned out to be the only surgeon who could save your life?” This quote really spoke to me because it holds a lot of truth in it being that bullying or being bullied sticks with you forever whether or not you apologized for what you did back in your school days or not, those words and actions scar people forever and it is something that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We are often blind to the fact that bullying is continuously a big problem in our society. This topic is important because almost everyone that we know, including ourselves have been affected by bullying in one way or another and we may not think what we do or have done is doing harm, but to other people we are hurting them in various ways and it can be very dangerous and lead to horrible things down the road. I am guilty of being all three at one point of time in my life and most people are whether the results are big or small.
