Jonas Courage In The Giver

Throughout the story, Lois Lowry illustrates how Jonas perseveres to obtain knowledge. We first see this when Jonas is going through training with the Giver: “‘I’m brave. I really am”’(82). This quote exemplifies how Jonas wants

In the novel The Giver, Lois Lowry shows the reader how choices in life are important, and should be made by us, not for us. Lowry uses characters such as Jonas and the giver to illustrate how choices should be made by us. She uses other characters such as Jonas's father to reflect how people are often blinded by the standards of society and do not realize they can actually make their own choices. With these characters, The Giver illustrates how choices are often made for us by figures of authority.

Jonas’ has had a variety of interesting experiences throughout the book. The Giver by Lois Lowry is about Jonas and he goes through many changes in his life with some help from the Giver. Jonas’ experiences develop a theme over the course of The Giver by teaching the reader for every action there is a consequence. Although some readers may believe that there will not be a consequence, Jonas’ experiences show that there are good and bad consequences for everything you do.

Jonas learns about love, he wants everyone else to feel it as well. Jonas feels love for his family, but they don't feel love for him. For this reason, Jonas left his Community to make sure that they feel what love is. If you don’t have feeling or emotions, it gives you a different perspective of society. Feelings of 'love' allows for comfort and a connection with one another.

Jonas starts out with a very low understanding of what it means to be mature. He has no knowledge of pain, love, or any other emotion. He proves this by acting like a normal child. Courage is defined as the following; strength in the face of pain or grief. In The Giver, Jonas shows extreme courage when he expects the position of receiver of memory. “You will be faced, now, with pain of a magnitude that none of us here can comprehend.” ( pg. 62-63) These were the words of the chief elder as she assigned jonas his position.Courage is also portrayed when Jonas escapes the community. Jonas knows that this will be extremely difficult but yet he is courageous and does this anyways, even when the consequences may be deadly. The Giver shows courage when he risks getting in serious trouble for helping Jonas escape. He knows that the community has many rules and that he would be breaking them by helping Jonas. Without Jonas’ courage he would have never been able to escape the community in hopes for a better life.

Jonas makes a journey and breaks the barrier letting all those components back into the society. Jonas goes through a long, dangerous journey to make a better tomorrow for his society. By choosing to save his community, Jonas jeopardized his life because if the Elders caught him he would have been released, which means prosecuted. In his community there is no love and passion. After the Giver gives Jonas the memory of love he is confused about why his community does not have it.

As Jonas leaves the community, he learns being true to oneself takes great courage, knowledge is useless without memories, and love conquers all. In The Giver, readers notice being true to oneself takes great courage. In Jonas’s community, the government tries to control the citizen’s feelings by giving them pills.

E.E Cummings, a famous American poet from the mid-1900s, once said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” In The Giver by Lois Lowry, the main character Jonas makes the right decision by choosing to take Gabriel and running from the community. His courageous act helped Gabriel, benefited himself, and assisted the community. When Jonas makes his brave choice, he transitions from a child to an adult.

Character Analysis when focused on survival Bravery is a hard trait to come by, but many people have this quality even if they don't know it yet. In both The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan and The Giver by Lois Lowry the main characters find their own bravery when focused on their own survival. In The Giver, Jonas’ bravery shined through when he decided to leave his community for the better of others. In The Forest Of Hands and Teeth, the bravery in Mary is evident when decided to leave her community on the risky, forbidden path that she had always been warned of. Both of the characters bravery is shown when their lives are put at risk and they are able to go after their own wildest dreams without restriction.
