Jonas's Society And Community In The Giver By Lois Lowry

If you are given a choice to save a loved one would you? Jonas did. Because Jonas knows what release is so he is able to save Gabe from it. Jonas’ father doesn’t know what release means so he can’t make an informed choice. “We really have to protect people from wrong choices” (pg 99). Jonas is protecting his father. People need knowledge to make informed choices. People may not always make the right choice but they can try to fix their mistakes and they can realize that what they did is wrong and not be ignorant. “He had made the wrong one: the choice to leave. And now he was starving”(pg172). Jonas knew that if he didn’t save Gabe he would die so he only cared about Gabe. Jonas made the decision to leave and now he is facing the consequences. Jonas has to learn more about death and pain than he already has. Death was something that wasn’t talked about in the community. The community “releases” members when they are old or if there is a set of twins or something wrong with a baby. Release is something celebrated within the community. Jonas had no idea that what release really means is to murder someone. He watches the release of a baby boy who was part of a set of twins born into the community. His father is the one performing this release because his father is a nurturer. This knowledge left Jonas devastated and in shock that his father could do something so terrible. He leaves the Giver’s and tells him that he can no longer continue receiving the memories. He takes a few days and collects himself. Fiona, his childhood friend talks him into to going back. Love is another emotion new to Jonas. He falls in love with Fiona. Falling in love is a big step that usually happens in adulthood. Jonas is just another member of his community. He spends his life following the rules that his community has imposed him. In all his life, he has blindly followed the rules and has never questioned them. The feelings Jonas has developed throughout the story has changed Jonas as a person, as a result Jonas develops feelings. One example of Jonas being feelingless is on page 131 in the small book, “... he couldn’t go back to the world of no feelings that he had lived in so long.” This quote show Jonas regrenting living in a world with no feelings and to remember a world with no feeling he has had to livid in a world with no feelings. In my opinion, Jonas left the community because of the memories and the reality presented to him by The Giver. After realizing the truth, he wanted to alter the perspectives of the citizens in the community by releasing his memories, he believed that the way people lived without any knowledge of the world surrounding them was wrong, and wished to live a more meaningful life when he left.

Jonas has an elaborate relationship with his Mom,Dad and his Sister(Lily). In the book The Giver Jonas likes his parents and has been with them for a long time, but when Jonas met the Giver he saw a different perspective of his parents and Lily. The reason Jonas has a new perspective of his parent is because , the Giver showed him how to have feelings and show love. Jonas wanted to live a different life. In his journey, Jonas travels with Gabriel, the child that was being nurtured by his family. He needed to saved him from being “released”. Together they faced danger and fear but it was just the beginning of a new life in the land of Elsewhere.

At the beginning of “The Giver”, the reader is to believe that the community Jonas lives in is a utopia. It’s later revealed that this is quite the opposite of what it really is. A dystopia. Along with Jonas, the reader finds out how in Jonas’s community they they give the elderly and newborns lethal injections, constrict feelings, and prevent any form of decision making. When Jonas discovers these things through memories, he is distraught, and he has the right to be. He wants to show everyone what has been taken away from them, and what they are being lied to about. This is why I believe it was completely justified for Jonas to leave the community.

Jonas’ community appears to be a utopia, but, in reality, it is a dystopia. The people seem perfectly content to live in an isolated wreck—in a government run by a select few—in which a group of Elders enforces the rules. In Jonas’ community, there is no poverty, starvation, unemployment, lack of housing, or discrimination; everything is perfectly planned to eliminate any problems. However, as the book progresses and Jonas gains insight into what the people have willingly given up—their freedoms and individualities—for the so-called common good of the community, it becomes more and more obvious that the community is a horrible place in which to live. You as a reader can relate to the disbelief and horror that Jonas feels when he realizes

What had Jonas change through the novel called The Giver?Throughout The Giver Jonas made made multiple dessions that lead to his change, for example, Jonas forgot to take the medicine and he felt love for fiona and he cared for others.Then Jonas stoped taking the medicine to see if the apple would change again, because of his choice Jonas' life changed.Jonas' life changes as a result of conflict with his dystopian society and had made him understand more about the society and why they were keeping the memories from the society.

Jonas discovers what is really beyond his community, beyond all the rules and policies they have to follow; he decides to leave and give all of his memories to the rest of the community so they would know about what they have not seen or experienced before. Jonas discovers that the community has decided too many things for everyone. He realizes Sameness is not right, that it cannot last any longer. He thinks of all the what-ifs. What if the Elders choose a wrong spouse? What if the Elders choose the wrong job for someone?
