Ignoring Bullies
(Topic Sentence) Bullying can happen to anyone and be completely ignored. (Background Info) Jamie Nabozny from Ashland, Wisconsin was bullied throughout middle school and high school for his sexual orientation. To emphasize, this constant harassment ended up making Nabozny run away from home twice and end up in the hospital from physical attacks of the bullies. His school district ignored this constant harassment until a lawsuit occurred. (Attention Grabber) In the hospital, Jamie recollected the bullies saying “You tell anybody, I’ll kill you.” These words kept Mr. Nabozny from reporting the assault and hiding it away from anyone for a while. Then, he tells someone, despite

(Evidence) He shows this strength to continue when he is beaten badly enough that the injuries take him to the hospital. The bullies scarred Nabozny physically and emotionally when they said, “If you say anything I will kill you”. (Elaboration) Similarly, many students who are bullied lose the will to live and do not want to attend school anymore. These frightened students are worried to talk about their encounters; despite the fact that, help might be given to them. The bully victim’s perseverance to have a better life leads him to a community health center in Minneapolis. Nabozny refused to give in to the tormentation of the bullies and wanted to have a better bully-free life. He gained the knowledge to make a lawsuit against the district. (Explanation) Sometimes people in high positions do not always do what it right; however, their job entitles it. (Significance) This shows that he had perseverance and wanted to give the people a run for their money and stand up for himself. He rose up like a phoenix from the ashes(Figurative Language) and showed that anything is possible and that bullying should not occur and should be stopped
Joshua Franklin, a Hawaiian single openly gay father is suing Hawaii State’s Department of education because they failed to respond after being reported about homophobic bullying his two sons endured at school. Franklin’s sons, 10-year-old Alea Stevens-Alameda and 9-year-old Poha Stevens-Alameda have been discriminated against and called homophobic names such as “fag” and “queer” and even assaulted by students because of their father’s sexual orientation. In April, Franklin’s younger son was choked and slammed to the ground during an after school program. According to the article, Hawaii legislators tried to pass a bill that would create a state definition of what bullying is and even listed some reasons for bullying, such as race, gender,
(Evidence that supports my point) Nabozny was both physically and mentally scarred during his pre-teen and teenage years in which he was harassed, peed on, and severely injured that he had to go to the hospital and get abdominal surgery . (Elaboration of Point and Evidence). Many victims of bullying decided to end their life because of the lack of help; however, Nabozny gave up on trying to commit suicide or run away. He was going to show his bullies and his principals that bullying students and not letting them get a proper education is not allowed. (How Main Idea supports thesis statement) Nabozny has been standing up against bullying even in his adult years; and in doing so, he is making sure that students to go through what he went through . (Significance) He has been giving speeches in schools, funded organizations that help, and created a documentary about his own life. With his help, many students have given up on bullying or have been inspired to stand up for themselves and others, which is strengthening the bonds between classmates. Nabozny’s help also has allowed bullied students to have more support through organizations and has shown the world that bullying is real and is scarring for a child to go
Horrific, unthinkable acts of violence against a young gay man, Matthew Shepard, took his life in 1998. This social problem was thrust into the mainstream media largely by his mother, Judy Shepard. She used her tragedy to create awareness, outrage and support exposing violence based solely on sexual orientation. Her work along with activists that joined her helped create our nation’s first hate crime legislation that included crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. It also made several other important provisions such as tracking hate crimes based on gender identity (transsexuals), funding to investigate and other critical supports. The Matthew Shepard Foundation does significant work on hate prevention programs in communities and continues to work toward tolerance today through its efforts to provide a voice and support for LGBT youth. Although some progress has been made, different forms of violence against gay and transgendered youth remains a troubling condition.
“The Laramie Project” is a production that was created to addressed the cruel murder of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard who lived in a small town of Laramie, Wyoming. Due to this critical situation that occurred, the state of Wyoming suffered from major judgements from other states in the U.S and countries around the world. Laramie, had demonstrated stereotypical actions and discrimination towards the gay community, due to the people who had killed Matthew being homophobic. When the incident occur in 1998, the legislative had not introduced the end to anti- discrimination for the society, but is now introduced this year, 2017(King, 2017). Sexual prejudice includes stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination based on ones’ sexual identity or behavior, in which this term can relate to what occurred in the small town of Laramie, Wyoming (Blaine, pg. 163).
The campaign, #School2Prison was created in order to adopt restorative practices for queer youth who have been charged with a crime while in school. For example, in 2013, Jewlyes Gutierrez, a transgender girl from California was charged with assault for defending herself against bullying in school. As well, in Indiana in 2012, Dynasty Young was expelled for bringing a stun gun to school, which he used in self-defense after enduring months of harassment based on his sexual orientation and gender expression (GSA Network 2009). This campaign demanded that all youth should have equal opportunity to go to school and be themselves, without the fear of victimization. This campaign is important because the ‘School-to-Prison pipeline’ is telling youth
Koyczan is one of many bully victims who has suffered in this world and to survive from its life-changing attacks. The way Koyczan portrayed himself in the beginning was a very shy little boy who was happy and had big hopes for the world. Toward the middle, he started to notice he wasn’t the only one who has been bullied, that he do not have to go through this by himself. only when he found out that he was not alone , but that they all should help each other embrace their scars together. At the end, Koyczan voice turned from having low-self esteem to pride.
The time has come when the common old time thug making a place for themselves has ended and now the devastating effects of the new bully come to life. New bullies don’t just stop with words and maybe a playground fight, now we have severe physical trauma and even death as a result of the negative responses to this type of treatment. Amazingly enough the amount of physical bullying has increased as with the increase of school bullying:
(attention grabbing strategy) How would you feel if you were laying in a hospital bed knowing that you were almost killed for your sexual identity? What would it be like if you would rather kill yourself than knowing you have to go to school tomorrow? This is exactly what happened to Jamie Nabozny. (background information) He was an ordinary child growing up in a small Wisconsin town of Ashland. Everything was fine until his life took a violent turn when his classmates figured out that he was gay. Then, people started teasing him to a point when it was simply unbearable. As a result, he even tried to overdose on drugs, feeling that death was the only escape. (thesis) Bullying is a very serious matter that can lead to misery (craft), depression and even death. (topic) This type of abuse is a traumatic experience that can (craft)impact a child’s life severely.
B One day, Jamie is put to the test. The bullies repeatedly kicked him, leaving Nabozny with severe wounds. By doing so, he has to be hospitalized. However, even after this incident, this moment haunts his memories for the rest of his life. C Many others would bend under the strain of standing up to the injustice, but Jamie didn’t give in. After feeling too horribly abused, Jamie runs away to seek asylum at a community center in the city. Jamie reaches out to people who give him encouragement and valuable advice to seek a lawsuit against the school that had denied to acknowledge or support Nabozny through his horrible school years. D Jamie's experience inspired others to never give in to bullies. Jamies story not only told others of his experience, but to press charges against whomever is bullying you can really aid. Jamie’s actions promoted the message that anyone who are victims of discrimination and injustice must fight to have their voices heard, and take the necessary steps to solve the
We’ve come so far in accepting non-traditional identities, yet we’re still stuck on the idea that you can only be straight or gay, male or female. That a choice must be made. According to bullying expert Dr. Dorothy Espelage, 49% of bisexual teens report having been bullied for their sexuality, the highest percentage of all sexuality groups. When we create false binaries, when we break life into black and white, we are breaking those around us. According to BBC News, Dwayne Jones was a gender non conforming teen from Jamaica. He was known as “Gully Queen” among his friends, and had dreamed of becoming a teacher or a performer. Last July, he attended a house party in female clothing and makeup. When the partygoers found out he was not biologically female, they formed a mob and began to chase him. They fatally beat, stabbed, and shot
His lawsuit portrayed that anyone could fight and win a gruesome (craft) war of abuse despite their sexuality. (Evidence that Supports your Point/Assertion from Documentary) Around the country, people are ashamed because the gender they identify with is uncommon. Everyday, they are debating whether they should fight, but they never do. Despite this, Jami met with a legal advocate for gays and lesbians. Sharing his experiences with someone else was crucial to his happiness. (Elaboration of Point and Evidence) Joni Thome, the legal advocate that met with Jamie, was very encouraging. After hearing his horrendous experience, Joni told Jamie to find an attorney. Seeking out for an attorney was very simple, but many federal courts dismissed them. Until, Lambda Legal came across this critical issue. After looking through his case, an attorney, who was also gay, took up the case. ( (Explain how Main Point and Example(s) Support Thesis Statement) A large law firm taking up a case denied by federal courts about sexual orientation brought light to the lesbian and gay community. This case encouraged other gays and lesbians to stand up for who they are. (Significance) This case gave limelight on sexual orientation. It told that no one should be discriminated against, especially in school. However, if the workers at the district, especially teachers and principals, failed to protect a child, a lawsuit will take place.
Topic sentence:It always happens, it almost never stops, no matter what you do, the bullies will always be around you. Attention grabbers: Did anyone in any school ever get bullied? Do people know how it feels to be alone with no one to help around, or at least be around? Attention grabbers and background: Jamie Nabozny, the kid that suddenly told the secret about his sexual orientation, that decided where he belongs, got bullied and never stopped fighting for his own, personal freedom just because people knew he was gay and thought he was different from the others. He was a great, innocent kid, that never did anything bad to anyone, but the bullies kept coming and Jamie tried everything during Ashland middle and high school. When Jamie came to report the bullies to the principle of his middle school, she said softly without any care at all: “Boys will be boys”. Jamie and his parents were surprised that this is how the principle was reacting when she heard those terrible news. When nothing helped, Jamie was so sad, he escaped away from home after being strongly bullied in school without telling his parents, he was brave by doing that although it is a really dangerous thing to do. Jamie faced many irregular things middle schoolers usually do not face. He is not the only kid who gets bullied because bullying is a worldwide issue that needs to be stopped. It has been estimated that approximately 44% of kids in middle school get bullied each year and schools want to decrease
We’ve all heard our elders say, “what I wouldn’t give to go back,” but I can’t imagine anything that would make me agree to repeat high school. Blessed with a heavy dose of femininity and no athleticism, my enrollment at an all-boys Catholic prep school seemed less like a privilege and more akin to a sick joke. Having bumped into my former classmates over the years, I know most recall me for coming out senior year, but breaking down barriers was not what motivated me; instead, I merely hoped owning my homosexuality would end the incessant need to call me a “faggot.” Under the pain, you can find some good memories peppered in there, like my participation in Speech and Debate, which, alongside glee, band, and the robotics club, the implicit “No Bullies Allowed” rule offered solace. Here I could set aside the fear of ridicule, and develop the confidence necessary for public speaking, which ultimately lead my current work. While prepping for my debates, I discovered my love of data. Following hours of research, I’d commit all the findings to memory and, in keeping true to the original Lincoln-Douglas Debate, use to undermine my opponent 's argument, leaving them little credible evidence for them to stand on. Although facts once offered hope, today the statistics relevant to my cause showcase a society with endemic cruelty and tragic outcomes targeting my vulnerable community.
(Topic) Bullying should not become an accepted part of anyone’s life. (Background info) Jamie Nabozny, a victim, has experienced an exorbitant number of encounters with bullies. Just another student attending Ashland Middle School, in a small Wisconsin town, he was harassed because of his sexual orientation. However, it did not stop at middle school; the oppressing continued throughout high school as well. At first, he could not receive the help he sought, consequently resulting in his depressed state of mind. (Attention Grabbing Strategy) Taken as a whole, he discerned that the only way to escape was, sadly, to kill himself. He swallowed a bottle of pills, along with his life and ”inescapable” depression. Wanting to
In a high school in Wisconsin, a fifteen year old boy named Danny was bullied. Danny was scared to stand up for himself against the bullies. Danny was a normal looking kid, he had blonde hair, blue eyes, and was kind of on the short side.(Looks/Appearance) The bullies started picking on him in 8th grade, first it began with verbal bullying. After a while it began to become both physical and mental. The bullies make him do their homework, and they stuff him in lockers.
