1. Identify and discuss the factors related to inequality and oppression in your topic.
Ageism incorporates prejudice against people based on age rather than due to their personal merits, color of their skin, their religious preference, or their socio-economic status, however it is one of the least contested oppressions in modern society Studies show that the aging population is subject to oppression and inequalities. These may arise in different ways such as; physical oppression; psychological/mental abuse; material/financial oppression; sexual abuse; and neglect (WHO, 2002) Other factors that can trigger inequalities and oppression of the aging population include the differences in socioeconomic statuses, and studies have shown a correlation between the aging population in the lower socioeconomic bracket and higher mortality rates in the old age (Nursing Times, 2015). Capitalism is also seen to relate to inequalities with the aging population, through aspects such as rates of savings, pension rights, unequal incomes, and access to property. Community and societal factors also result in oppression of the aged where they are set aside and denied access to opportunities and resources based on their age.

This involves generally characterizing a certain group with different features that are then used to discriminate against people in that group from accessing opportunities or resources. The oppression is often manifested economically where an age group is restricted economically with regard to participation in activities that affect the economy while within that age
Furthermore, the author integrates historical background and sociological examination to place the phenomenon within broader frameworks of oppression and
Diversity is a complex word with a broad range of definitions, however, it can be summarized by one word, “difference” (CITATION). Moreover, this “difference” can cause several different issues such as institutionalized oppression, internationalized oppression, power and privileged, gender, immigration, race and micro, mezzo, and macro. In this paper, it would be discussed what these issues are as well as how these issues are portrayed in the novel The Other Wes Moore. One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore.
After this week's readings, it definitely helped me understand more about the concept of oppression and how it is connected with discrimination and prejudice. Through reading the chapter in "Is Everyone Really Equal?", it was presented in a way where it was very informative, describing current issues that individuals face in their everyday lives. There was a lot of information to take in, however, it made me realize, without question, how little I know about oppression and how it greatly affects an individual's life. It was also interesting to read about the women's suffrage portion in the chapter. That no matter how much women wanted to be granted the right to vote, only men had the power to vote and also having the power to give women
Given the definition of oppression as a system of interrelated barriers and forces which “mold”, “immobilize”, and “reduce” a certain group of people, and affect their subordination to another group (Frye 4), Frye lists out five premises in order to be considered oppressed. First of all, the group of people must be restricted. In other words, there must be limitations or barriers on them. For example, women make 78 cents for every dollar earned by men (Kessler 1). Second, “those restrictions surely cause harm, which must outweigh any potential benefits oppressed groups experience as a result of those same restrictions” (Gillingham 1). For
Finally, age is another social inequality that is taking place in society. However, certain individuals in society has being restricted from certain opportunities based on their age. According to Nick Triggle from BBC News, he reported that thousands of older people are not getting their support from the state or private sector. However, according to the Age UK, they stated that 800,000 older people has being take off from the system and the figure is going to be increase in the future. Society has been unequal in relation to ageing population, the ministers are looking at making an increase in funding based on the ageing population of older people. However, they are looking at excluding older people whose savings are above £23,250. Beside
Monahan (2011) defines the concept of privilege as "the unearned benefits and advantages that accrue to members of a dominant groups as a result of ongoing exploitation and oppression of members of dominated groups (p.73). " Privilege has focused on explicitly held beliefs and attitudes forsake all other forms of oppression such as gender, class, and heterosexual oppression. Firstly to address the origins of class, the term "privilege" Latin meaning is "private law" that keeps one outside the laws from others like "hereditary" elites. Secondly, birth status (often males) rather than individual merit accounted for the legitimacy of privilege. The relationship between government and religion tie the noble births to these advantages and exclusivity (Monahan, 2011).
In his book and lecture, Abramson (2015) explains the difference in challenges seniors face based on their economic circumstances. Research showed that older adults who resided in poor, socially marginalized neighborhoods did not have the opportunities or access to resources compared to high socioeconomic neighborhoods. Therefore, these lower status neighborhoods produce higher mortality rates earlier in life due to high stress, manual labor, and other forms of deprivation. Abramson explains that inequality scribes itself on the body throughout one’s life course possibly even on a genetic level. The disadvantaged have health problems throughout the course of their lives because social circumstances does affect the extent the body wears out.
This paper is going to define oppression, describe an oppressed group and a framework. Oppression is defined as “unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power or a sense of being weighed down in body or mind” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2010) The oppressed population that I am going to describe is uninsured children with a disability. Typically, children obtain health insurance coverage through their parents. If parents lack health insurance, so will their children. This paper will discuss the social problem of the inability of children with a disability to obtain health insurance.
Another important discrimination practice in health and social care is the age of an individual. Age discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of their age, without justification, or is harassed and victimised because of their age. Age discrimination also happens when someone is denied something because of their age, for example there were controversies regarding giving older people drugs because of their shorter life expectancy, due to their age. Some people have argued that the money would be better spent on drugs for younger people. This is a massive discrimination against older people. An example of age discrimination in a health and social setting is that someone might not be provided a certain service because of their old age for example if they apply for a job as a nurse they might refuse their application because of their old age. This is a type of discrimination in a lot jobs but this was an example from a health and social service.
Monahan (2014), stated privilege is understanding in relation to some corresponding form of oppression. The concept of privilege can be amplify in other areas such as gender, class and heterosexual privilege. For example, when it comes to gender privilege, men may get offered more money than women or get a better position. When it comes to heterosexual privilege, we still have some states that do not recognized same sex marriages and it is difficult to obtain their spouse pension or have issues with health insurances.
The second face of oppression, marginalization, is the exclusion of people of a third world such as racially marked groups, unemployed, disabled, elderly, etc. This kind of act usually assumes that a particular individual does not have certain traits or characteristics that make them equal within society. Individuals who are marginalized are often discriminated and even excluded from social gatherings and activities because some might think they are not qualified to attend. An example of marginalization is how a person with a disability like those who are paraplegic, often are secluded from any type of physical sports because some might think that they are not capable of being good at a physical sport, such as baseball, while you are paraplegic. Another example of marginalization is how women are not expected to be hired in executive or managerial positions because it is seen that the men are more dominant and powerful in order to obtain and withhold positions of such demand and leadership. Because of this assumption, women who might be more qualified in specific areas are often not considered for certain jobs with a higher standing because they are seen as less dominant than a man.
Justene glanced at the sign standing outside of the double doors to the lecture hall of her college’s conference building that read “Oppression and Privilege: A Lecture on the Problems of Oppression and Privilege in Our Society. Guest Speakers Peggy McIntosh, Marilyn Frye, and Allan G. Johnson.” She continued through the door and found her friend Ashley, giving her a brief hug before taking her seat, wondering why she had let Ashley talk her into coming to this lecture in the first place. Ashley was a Philosophy major and dedicated her life to knowing all about current issues and heavily debated topics. Justene on the other hand, was a Human Development and Family Studies major who was way
The aim of this essay is to address the problem of inequality and oppression through three separate texts, The Second Sex, The Death of the Profane and Killing Rage. The Second Sex focuses on the woman and her role compared to man. The Death of the Profane and Killing Rage are both texts that describe experiences about the constant racism felt by blacks. To thoroughly examine these texts and how they are related to oppression and inequality it is important to first define what each mean. Oppression and inequality each have different definitions but they go hand in hand. Oppression is the state of being subject to prolonged unjust treatment. While inequality is defined as lacking equality, equality is the state of being equal especially in status,
In today’s society it is essential to understand the difference between disparity and discrimination. There are numerous people who still believe that the world is prejudice. This paper will compare and contrast disparity and discrimination. The paper will give examples of both and there relation to the criminal justice system.
A world of system designed to keep people in unjust and unequal positions is held in place by several interrelated expression of "power over": political power, economic power, physical force, and ideological power (Bishop, 1994: 36). So, we can say power is defined as a possession of control, authority or influence over others. In terms of power of dominant groups over subordinate groups, we define power as domination of one group of people over another in major important spheres of life. Power inequities have been in existence throughout the history of humanity and the ways of manifestation evolved from extreme overt oppression to subtle, covert oppression. Three major forms of power inequalities discussed in this paper are
