How Do We Understand American Culture? We can learn from the past what we are not supposed to do. By learning history, we can know what will happen before make a decision and avoid same mistake. To better understand American culture, it is important to listen to voices different than our own because it helps us learned from our past mistake. In the article “A flower from the graves,” the author Patterson said “We watched the stage set without staying it” (Patterson 5). Patterson illustrates how the white people were responsible to take care of children. Patterson also illustrates why adults need to pay attention in front of children so they do not act like adults. In “Martin Luther King’s letter,” MLK said “this movement is nourished by the
The Tennessee Department of Corrections is a department that is built on a rank and file model that allows for the flow of leadership to work in two directions from top to bottom and from the bottom to the top (Tornblom, 2017). We can see in this type of organization that the Courageous Follower model can have a significant impact on the day to day operations of this team because of the large number of both followers and leaders and each member of each group having their type of work ethics and work skills (personal communication, October 21, 2017). Every country around the globe has its own unique culture, social belief and structure, and values. American culture is not different in this regard. Two of the most significant values of American culture are a strong work ethic and the competitive spirit. This paper will examine how these values define American culture, how these values affected me personally growing up, and how these values influence my attempts to influence others.

The lessons of our past can me cited in an abounding amount of ways and these lessons have been being passed down from generations to generations. From being told in stories by grandparents who fought the wars and through documents and artifacts left behind and found that give us this greater understanding of our past. Our history has taught us many lessons and these are important to fathom because it has guided us and been the foundation to our world. We don’t want our history to be forgotten and basic American history is already beginning to fade from our knowledge. A basic study about American history was given to 2,500 random citizens from all backgrounds by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. The test was a simple 33 questions on civic
I find myself curious about the past. From ancient civilizations to the technological advancements that have made us who we are today, the past has been instrumental in the development of the present. Much like in essay “America” I too think of the United States when I hear the word America, even if you do an internet search for “America” the first result would be something pertaining to the United States. As an immigrant from Trinidad West Indies at the age of 13 all I knew of the United States was the name America that was associated with it. Knowing nothing more I was introduced to the American culture in the 7th grade. Never having study the history of the United States I have learned the culture and what it means to be an American from
The Imbalance of Appearance and Reality in Macbeth “There are forces in life working for you and against you. One must distinguish the beneficial forces from the malevolent ones and choose correctly between them” -Abdul Kalam. As one may observe, it is revealed that in classic literature as well as modern time, duplicity is an act that one must decide what is appearance and what the appearance is in reality. In the classic battle of Macbeth, it becomes apparent that when characters make inconsistent decisions they fatally affect themselves or other characters in the play. This tragic play demonstrates that once one is consumed by evil, countries of people loose their ability to express the difference between good and evil, fair and foul,
The first reason why every U.S. citizen should learn our past history is that they need to learn of
The federal government is the level of government which governs our nation as a whole. The federal government affects all 50 states, in other words, all Americans. Those in power of the federal government are the branches of the executive (President), legislative (Congress), and judicial systems (Supreme Court). In a society, people adhere to various rules and standards that are created and maintained in culture. On page 50, the definition of culture is shared beliefs, values, and practices that participants must learn. Defining one’s own culture can be quite difficult, much less hard to articulate, but it is often the deciding factor when it comes to making personal and social decisions. Independence is strongly rooted in American culture and helps identify modern society to the general population of American-raised children, and explains how the value of American independence has shaped my individual culture.
Even moving to a new house can be a little nerve racking. Will there be enough space? How will the community be? These are all questions that can go through a person's mind when moving.
Learning about history is imperative in that it can prevent us from making the same mistakes. George Santayana said ¨Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.¨ Therefore, we can use history as a sort of guidebook to avoid reiterating previous mistakes, and even to provide solutions to present problems. Those who do not learn about history won’t be able to improve the future.
As children we quickly learn from our mistakes, when a little kid puts their hand on a hot stove they pull it away quickly because it hurts. As adults, we learn to make informed decisions about politics and our life based on what had happened in the past. The reason why we take a history class is so we can learn from our past mistakes. We look at the way people did things in the past and we have the privilege of seeing how it ended for them, so we can form our own opinions and ideas from it. For example, today we are much more aware of foreign crisis because of the Holocaust. No one wants to see something like the Holocaust happen again so we are doing our best to find a safe way to fight ISIS and other similar groups. People can also make
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This quote comes from a Spanish-born American by the name of George Santayana. In order for America to avoid repeating its own mistakes, it is imperative to study and comprehend history. Many problems that the US dealt with 50, 100, or even 200 years ago are similar to the ones we face as a country today. What have we learned from our past missteps that can aid us in current crises? What can we learn from our past successes? Are we doomed to recreate history in an endless loop no matter what?
Of course, culture has a huge role in how we are brought up. This falls into the nature vs nurture idea that we discussed in previous weeks. I'm completely aware that this is something that has developed in our culture and others similar to it. Although, we can still see some division within our own country. Say you go to the southern United States, the people there aren't going to take as kindly to a woman doing, say a construction job, or any other job that is primary done by men, but if you go to say New York or California there may still be some division, but I don't feel it would be as harsh. The same goes for the entire gay marriage movement, I'd imagine the southern states wouldn't take as kindly to it as they would in some of the more
