For this assignment, we were asked to choose a hip hop song from the 1980s or the 1990s that could be explained using the three step process of the blues or the gospel. When I first read about this assignment I knew I wanted to do Missy Elliott. I decided to use the song The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), sometimes referred as I Can’t Stand the Rain, which was released in 1997. I’ve always been a fan of hers and this her very first single. I analyzed the lyrics and listened to the song a few times, as well as did some research about the background of the song. Also, I reviewed the three step process of the blues, where the blues “can be used by painters, dancers, or writers as well as musicians. The process consists of (1) fingering the jagged grain of your brutal experience; (2) finding a near-tragic, near-comic voice to express that experience; and (3) reaffirming your existence.” (Sanchez 5). In the music video, she wears a trash bag, which shows that her figure shouldn’t matter, only her talent. This is where I see the correlation to the second step of the process, finding a near-comic voice to express her experience. When analyzing the lyrics, I found that “I can’t stand the rain against my window” could mean that she doesn’t like people doubting her or telling her that she can’t do something.
