Mercutio never had to get into the scene, by doing so he made everything more heated and stopped thinking straight. Your judgement was clouded by his pride, to the point where he was foolish enough to fight Tybalt. I believe that Shakespeare had Mercutio die first for a very important key reason. This reason is to show that being foolish and bad, when you are foolish you make bad judgement and in this case it cost Mercutio his own life. It is here to show us and give a lesson on how we should act and think, especially when it concerns others. Furthermore, it shows a sense of thing not being so innocent as they had before, as we had read about Mercutio's thoughts on love and how it was all fake. We had been filled with his oblivious thoughts all the way up to this point, and it takes that sense of innocence away from the story, we learn that death takes anyone, often times death is the result of bad decisions. This goes to show the audience up until this point that love has negative consequences and its rarely ever a perfect love story where everyones happy. Romeo and Juliet's love is coming at a grave cost, death. This makes everything seem so much more real and fine tuned to what life really is like. It starts to open up the reader and Romeo’s eyes to what can happen when you make poor and quick decisions, you think it would want to separate them, but I think it …show more content…
The decision made by Polly Plummer was being too interested and not slowing down. The result was her putting on the wrong ring that would took her into Narnia, and worst of all she went into Narnia without the other ring that would take her back to the real world. The quick and scarce decision made by Polly resulted in so many negative consequences, some greater than others. I think that Polly made this decision out of curiosity but also because she was tricked into doing so by Uncle Andrew. Even though Uncle Andrew had tricked her, I believe that Polly is still the one to blame because if she never had gotten all handsy and searched through everything, this problem never even would’ve came up. From reading and seeing what Polly did, plus the negative effects of her doing something so rash and quick. Quick decisions and actions often times come with consequences as we also saw constantly all throughout Romeo and Juliet.I was able to take away lots, as we often times as people make mistakes out of curiosity and almost always when we make a mistake, we aren't the only ones being affected by it. If I were in Polly Plummer’s shoes, I don't believe that I would’ve made the same mistake. I think that I would’ve been lots more like Digory in this situation where he had sad more in the back as he didn't trust what was going on at all with Uncle Andrew. Me as a person, I am less outgoing than Polly so I wouldn't
3. How does Benvolio compare to Tybalt? ~ Tybalt wants war while Benvolio wants peace. This is concluded by Tybalt's aggressive manner towards anything having to do with the other side of the family. Benvolio, on the other hand has remarkable qualities that allows to see that he is a man of good stacher.
Two characters Mercutio and Tybalt who both had similar and different personalities and both hates eachother following the fact that their families did not like eachother. They are both protective of their families and are loyal. The difference between the both is that Mercutio is a character with a light personality. He is passionate,he gets what he wants, loves to live his life and he is carefree.Tybalt on the other hand is a character with a much darker personality. He is troublesome,he is a hater, quick tempered and takes things too serious. The hatred fighting all started when Tybalt finds out something about Romeo and Juliet and tries to find a way to get rid of Juliet,Mercuito hears of this and is willing to Fight Tybalt for the protection
Mercutio, Benvolio, Romeo, and Tybalt all have attributes that either escalate or de-escalate the violence and killing of two men (3.1). Mercutio’s attribute of not being able to self-examine causes the situation to be escalated between him and Tybalt. His attribute’s effect on the situation is shown when he says, “make it a word and a blow.” (3.1.41,42) and he thinks the fight is Tybalt’s fault. Benvolio, with the attribute of being cool and collected, tries to de-escalate the situation between Tybalt and Mercutio. Benvolio steps between the two and tells them “withdraw unto some private place” (3.1.53). Romeo has strong impulse causing him to think before he acts and also causes him to escalating the violence after Mercutio is dead.
Mercutio, similar to Tybalt is a fiery combatant, onry, and quick to fight. However, Romeo’s own actions to stop the duel between Mercutio and Tybalt would result in Mercutio motivating Romeo’s rage. Without Mercutio’s desire to battle Tybalt, Romeo never would have discovered his vengeful side. On page 868 of Prentice Hall’s Literature, Volume Two, lines 107-113, Romeo realizes his actions, “This gentleman, the Prince’s near ally, My very friend, hath got his mortal hurt In my behalf-my reputation stained With Tybalt’s slander-Tybalt, that an hour Hath been my cousin. O sweet Juliet, Thy beauty hath made me effeminate And in my temper soft’ned valor’s steel!” This shows the boiling anger building within Romeo, ultimately brought on by himself and
In the classic novel “Romeo and Juliet”, Romeo needs to solve several complicated conflicts, and to help him perform these actions he has two close friends, Benvolio and Mercutio. While they both help Romeo to solve his problems, Benvolio and Mercutio are drastically different characters. Benvolio is calm and rational, while Mercutio is hotheaded, impetuous and rash. Consequently, Mercutio and Benvolio are foils for each other, but when acting together, they help Romeo a lot.
Romeo’s dear friend, Mercutio, greatly affects the events that lead up to the death of Romeo and Juliet. Although he is a loyal friend to Romeo,
The feud between the houses contributed to Mercutio’s death because if Mercutio didn’t threaten taking one of Tybalt’s “nine lives.” Another reason he died is Romeo stepped in between Tybalt and Mercutio when they were fighting, he might not have died if Romeo had told he married Juliet or not have threatened him. “A
His efforts to promote peace sharply contrast with Tybalt’s aggressive tendencies. The difference between Tybalt and Benvolio in the play shows the difference between night and day but also emphasizes on the ongoing feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. Which will ultimately lead to the tragic death of Romeo and
The play Romeo & Juliet presents a few specific character foils. The characters Romeo & Mercutio develop a unique foil; Mercutio, the player, and Romeo, the lover. Both characters have unique characteristics that set themselves apart, but all-in-all, bind them together.
In William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Benvolio and Tybalt are portrayed as characters with distinctly opposing personalities that is apparent in many different instances throughout the play. Romeo's best friend, Benvolio is depicted as the classic nice guy, incorporating all the personalities necessary to be one. He is calm, patient, an advocate of peace between the two rival families, and always viewing the cup as half full instead of half empty. During the first quarrel between the Montagues and the Capulets in the play, Benvolio tries to bring peace by saying " I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, / Or manage it to part these men with me " ( , , 62-63). It is apparent that Benvolio has good intentions and that he
In this essay we will discuss the character development of Mercutio, his ambitions, and his motives in the play Romeo and Julie. Mercutio is a middle aged, witty and family bound, dirty blonde haired man. Romeo is running away after the cavalry party when Mercutio exclaims “If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark.” (2.1.34) What Mercutio is leading on to is that Romeo shouldn’t chase Juliet’s love for it would be lust not love..
With Mercutio’s jests towards Benvolio, Shakespeare shows Mercutio is a careless and hotheaded character. Mercutio joked with Benvolio that he, Benvolio, “art like one of these fellows that, when he enters the confines of a tavern, claps me his sword upon the table and says ‘God send me no need of thee’ and , by the operation of the second cup, draws him on the drawer when indeed there is no need” (5-10). Many characters do not enjoy Mercutio’s careless and offensive jokes. When Mercutio finds pleasure in joking about Benvolio, Benvolio does not retaliate. Benvolio doing this causes Mercutio to want a
For all of these reasons, Mercutio is essential to the play. SUMMARY Mercutio and Benvolio are discussing the hot day and the possibility of a quarrel. Tybalt enters looking for Romeo and rudely addresses them.
. Firstly, Tybalt is to blame for Mercutio’s death as he actually gave him the wound that killed him. Also, Tybalt provokes Mercutio by insulting Romeo, ‘Thou art a villain.’ This is one of the biggest insults that Tybalt can give and would usually be followed by a duel. However, Romeo calmly replies by saying ‘Villain I am none / Therefore farewell. I see thou know’st me not.’ Because Romeo is not defending his honour, Mercutio is provoked by Tybalt’s insults and starts insulting Tybalt himself. This is what leads to the two of them fighting and Mercutio getting his fatal wound. So, if Tybalt didn’t insult Romeo or fight Mercutio, Mercutio wouldn’t have been killed.
Mercutio and Tybalt are very different in some ways and in others, they are very alike. Socially they are extremely different, Mercutio is always trying to have fun and crack jokes and enjoy his life while Tybalt, is very straight laced and serious in his manner. From a modern standpoint, we would say that Mercutio is the life and soul of the party and all of his friends like to be around him but when it comes to Tybalt, we see him as the guy nobody likes because he is too serious and is always looking to start a quarrel. Whereas, from an old fashioned religious point of view, Mercutio would be seen as a hell raiser and a trouble maker and
