In William Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is a friend of Romeo and Benvolio. Mercutio is best known for being a party animal. Sometimes he acts without thinking, and he makes impulsive and immature decisions that lead to his death. Some of the things to blame for his death is The Feud, Romeo’s submissiveness, and himself.
One blame of Mercutio’s death is The Feud of the Capulet’s and Montague’s. The feud between the houses contributed to Mercutio’s death because if Mercutio didn’t threaten taking one of Tybalt’s “nine lives.” Another reason he died is Romeo stepped in between Tybalt and Mercutio when they were fighting, he might not have died if Romeo had told he married Juliet or not have threatened him. “A
In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the character Mercutio is a foil for Romeo. They are both young men who enjoy each other's company and meet their death in this tragedy. Romeo is an impulsive, hopelessly dramatic romantic who overreacts to most life events. While Mercutio is more realistic, grounded, carefree and serious, although he can be impulsive. With Mercutio being a foil for Romeo, it is easy to see Romeo's dramatic and tragic life story as compared to the more calmer tragic ending for Mercitio.
I think that one of the biggest causes of Mercutio’s death is the ‘ancient grudge’ between the ‘two households’, the Capulet’s and Montague’s. This is a massive cause because this alone was what started off all the fights. After Mercutio has been mortally wounded, he sees that this is why he is dying, which is why he says ‘a plague o’ both your houses!’ If the Montague’s and Capulet’s weren’t fighting, Tybalt wouldn’t have gone up to Romeo and insulted him. If that never happened, Mercutio would have never fought Tybalt and died. Also, all of the other reasons for Mercutio’s death would have never happened if the Capulet’s and Montague’s weren’t fighting.
He is the one who tries to pick Romeo back up and dust him off. Even though Romeo may not have admitted it, Mercutio was portrayed as his rock. That is why when he dies, this triggers a turning point in the play for the worst, resulting in multiple deaths and even an exile. Romeo and Juliet’s plan was caused by the death of Mercutio, because if he had not fallen, Romeo would not have lost his temper and slain Tybalt in a fit of rage. Romeo feels to blame since Mercutio “…got his mortal hurt in [Romeo’s] behalf;” (III.i.106-107). In turn, Romeo strives for vengeance and achieves it through the death of Tybalt. Although Mercutio is considered to be a subsidiary character, the outcome of the story would have been much
To begin with, Mercutio is a good friend to Romeo in that he stands up for Romeo when in need. In Act III, Scene I, there is a scene in which Tybalt, Mercutio, and Romeo are conversing. In lines 59-60, Tybalt says, “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain.” This
Mercutio’s death works as a catalyst for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. From the moment that Mercutio is stabbed by Tybalt, the actual tragedy aspect of the play begins. Up to Mercutio’s death, the play follows a rather light-hearted, dramatized tone, but once his death plays out, the plot turns to focus on the misfortunes of the rest of the characters. Following Mercutio’s death, Romeo hints at the disasters to come by saying, “This day’s black fate on more days doth depend. This but begins the woe others must end (3.1.124-125)”. Moments after Mercutio’s death, Romeo is already aware of what troubles will arise. As Mercutio is held as Romeo’s stability, Romeo knows that something will begin from the end of Mercutio. As Mercutio’s death plays out, both Mercutio and Romeo are correct in the sense of their knowledge of Mercutio’s death being held as a catalyst, even if no one else does. If Romeo had died in the fight rather than Mercutio, the tragedy would not have happened, as Mercutio is more levelheaded than Romeo, and would have made sure the situation
Mercutio is what his name stands to be, Mercurial. Though known as a joyful and intense character, he is in fact partially to blame for the tragic death of the two young lovers. It is in fact Mercutio who convinces a young Romeo to forget about
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio’s death, although many people believe Tybalt was the only one to blame, many other people played a part in Mercutio’s death as well as Tybalt including Romeo and the Montagues and Capulets. Firstly, Romeo caused Mercutio’s death because he stepped in front of Mercutio, blocking his view allowing him to be stabbed, also because when Tybalt came to fight Romeo, Romeo refused but provoked the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio. The quote said by Mercutio, in act 3c scene 1 “why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm.”
Purpose of the Deaths: Romeo and Juliet In the novel “No Fear Shakespeare; Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare multiple characters may be responsible for the deaths of six characters in the book: Romeo, Juliet, Lady Montague, Paris, Tybalt, and Mercutio. Although Mercutio was one of the characters who was killed in the story, it is evident that Mercutio is primarily responsible for the other five characters’ deaths in the novel. Mercutio is responsible for the deaths of the other characters for two reasons, one being Mercutio is very presumptuous and overconfident. Another reason Mercutio can be blamed for the downfall of the other characters is his incompetence to control is temper or behavior.
Mercutio: “I am hurt. A plague o' both your houses! I am sped” (3.1.58-59). Because Mercutio is in neither of the houses, he says that his death was the result of the family feud, seen in the fight that was sparked between Romeo and Tybalt. Mercutio thinks that the family feud, as seen in Tybalt’s loyalty to the Capulets and Romeo’s loyalty to the Montagues, is a ridiculous reason for his death.
Both families are responsible for the death of Mercutio equally. The Montagues and the Capulets have been having a rivalry of sorts for a long time and that’s the main cause as to what killed Mercutio. Even the servants of each family can’t stand each other even though they are not related by blood. The servants are what start the fight instead of the actual family members. The death of Mercutio inevitably was caused mostly by the Capulets.
The Importance of Mercutio to the Plot and Action of Romeo and Juliet I believe that, although Mercutio is introduced to the play quite late and his death occurs not too long after, much of the play's action, interesting dialogue and comic relief revolves around him, making Mercutio quite a central character. It is Mercutio who inadvertently brings the two lovers together for the first time when he lures Romeo to the gathering at Lord Capulet's residence 'Nay gentle Romeo, we must have you dance' = = =
The timeless, tragic love story Romeo and Juliet is full of important characters that shape and complete the play. Mercutio is just one of the many characters vital for the turnout of the play. The reaction given by Mercutio when he finds out Romeo is in love gives the story a bit of a much needed comical essence. Next Mercutio did not think Romeo should get involved with capulet Juliet, this conflicting viewpoint gives the story a dynamic plot making it more interesting for the reader. Finally the death of Mercutio changed the mood of the play and added Tragedy to the happy theme.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare mixes humor and seriousness through characters like Mercutio, whose personality contrasted with Romeo’s, which helps create a larger impact for tragedies, more intense dramatic irony and can lighten the mood in some instances. Mercutio can be described as larger than life and silly, which brings out a different side of Romeo and impacts the entire play. Throughout the play Mercutio expressed his true opinion on things like love and dreams, which often contrasted with Romeo’s beliefs. These things brought out different sides of each other. Mercutio was an anti romantic and mocked Romeos thoughts often.
The Significance of Mercutio in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is about two lovers whose families are at war and how the two overcome the family feud for their love for each other. Mercutio is one of the central characters in the play; he is one of the prince's kinsmen and is best friend to Romeo of the Montague household. The name Mercutio is derived for the word mercurial which means eloquent, active and changeable; Mercutio is all three because through out the play he changes his mood from a light-hearted joking to fiery insults in a short time. Mercutio is very persistent and is always ready to do things which again show the relevance of his name because of his
Mercutio is a relative of the prince and friend to Romeo. He is an eloquent man and becomes the center of attention whenever he appears in the play. It seems like he dominates Romeo with his teasing and irony. He mocks Romeo as he thinks he is too sentimental and tells him how foolish he is; he turns all of Romeo’s thought about love into sexual metaphors.
