Mercutio is to blame! “A plague on both houses! I am speed” (3.1.90). Let's dive into the mind of the great Mercutio who has no side in the cauldron and montague fight. As we dive into the mind of Mercutio, we will also be exploring all the internal and external personalities about him. In this essay we will discuss the character development of Mercutio, his ambitions, and his motives in the play Romeo and Julie. Mercutio is a middle aged, witty and family bound, dirty blonde haired man. Romeo is running away after the cavalry party when Mercutio exclaims “If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark.” (2.1.34) What Mercutio is leading on to is that Romeo shouldn’t chase Juliet’s love for it would be lust not love.. Benvolio and Mercutio are talking when Tybalt stumbles upon them in the street at Verona. Mercutio, enraged at the sight of Tybalt, says “And but one word with one of us? Couple it with something; make it a word and a blow.” (3.1.38-39) What Mercutio is doing here is trying to make Tybalt strike him at his own will, almost mocking him saying he doesn’t have the heart to stab him. Moreover, Mercutio changes in his demeanor having more of an aggressive attitude towards Tybalt, daring him to strike at him. Mercutio is blinded by his anger and gets what he deserves.
