The 2000s were packed with innovations in every aspect of life. As seen over any decade, there were obvious changes to social norms and society. Advances in technology, music, travel and film just to name a few. Another milestone was the 44th presidential election, where Americans voted the first African American into office in the county's history. The music industry evolved and utilized technology to transform itself into the structure that is modern music. Eminem became the best selling artist in the decade. However, not everything in the decade was favorable. An unprecedented attack on US soil, that lead to a war unlike the others, shook the nation. Use of technology, genre shifts, the use of autotune and emergence of hip hop as the top genre. Technology was implemented in new and exciting ways during the decade. MP3s were a great tool for making music widely available and mobile. The internet was also a means of making music widely available, as well as inexpensive to share. Games such as guitar hero gave ordinary people the feeling of being a musician, leading to increased interest in music. Rise of the internet gave way to music videos and more that made music more of a culture. All these things that are now social norms were made mainstream by the 2000s. Autotune arose from the decade and was heavily used and sometimes relied upon. Autotune is a computer program that takes pitches and changes them to flow and sound better in a song (Song facts 1). Singers love this program as it hides any imperfections in their work, thus making their vocals seem perfect. Before this decade autotune was unused, but in the 2000s there was a dramatic rise in use. The rise can also be attributed to the prevalences of hip hop throughout the decade. Marshall gave himself his stage name of Eminem after playing on his initials, M&M, which spelled phonetically is Eminem (Billboard 1). Born in 1974, he never knew his father. He was raised completely by his mother, which was a rough upbringing in downtown detroit. He moved often and was bullied in school, an abrasive childhood when accompanied with a mother that was abusive and addicted to drugs. After failing the ninth grade three times, Marshall dropped out when he was 17 (Bio 1). Finding rap as a useful form of expression, he began participating in rap battles when he wasn’t working jobs to get by. He was skilled in english despite his failures in high school, going as far as studying the dictionary. This gave him a certain command over the english language when he was rapping. After little success as a rapper, he met Kat and they had a baby, which gave Eminem a drive to be a successful rapper. After winning a competition in Los Angeles a well known rapper Dr. Dre discovered Marshall, listened to his album and signed him to his record label. Eminem then released his first record label album Slim Shady LP (long playing album) in 1999. It was an instant hit and was a new and fascinating sound that the rap scene had not heard. Eminem rapped violently and was unphased by using vulgar language in his music. Finally the 2000s came around and he produced another album, the Marshall Mathers LP
