Professor Portony Engl-152 24 October 2012 The Real Slim Shady Marshall Mathers, widely known as Eminem, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor, who is recognized as one of the most controversial and best-selling artists of the early 21st century (“Eminem”). Marshall writes most of his lyrics through his personal life experiences while adding a comical “I don’t give a S***” vibe to them. He struggled through a rough and lonely childhood, had relationship issues, became a father at a young age, and worked hard with dedication and persistence to get where he is today. His lyrics continue to say that he has made some mistakes but is only human and is man enough to face them today. After numerous falling outs with Kim, one particular time he saw her with another man kissing at a club parking lot and Marshall went into a jealous rage. He pulled a gun out on the other man, and in his song he admits “What I did was stupid, no doubt it was dumb But the smartest shit I did was take the bullets out of that gun Cause I'd a killed them, shit I woulda shot Kim and him both…” (Cleaning Out My Closet Lyrics). Another hit songs that show his emotional side is Mockingbird. It is a personalized heartfelt lullaby that revolves around his daughter Hailie and memories. For the most part the song is specifically for her explaining how he is trying to make her childhood better than his but in doing so it has separated them. Also, Kim had developed a drug habit and had an alcohol problem. Marshall’s lyrics cater to what he perceives as Hailie’s viewpoint of missing her mom and dad being together as a family.
