The thing that separates humans from animals is mankind’s ability to make decisions. One makes many different choices every day. Whether the decision concerns a matter of great importance, like voting for a new president, or just a simple everyday decision, like what one should eat for breakfast, each decision affects one’s own life or another’s life. Making good choices, however, is easier said than done. Over the ages, many people have found themselves in a difficult situation due to unfortunate decision-making. William Shakespeare portrays this theme throughout his play, Romeo and Juliet. As audiences follow the journey of Romeo, one can easily see how his impulsive decisions can lead to deadly consequences. Shakespeare expresses this theme early in Act I when Romeo attends a masquerade ball, hosted by the Capulets, and becomes entranced by Juliet, the daughter of Lord Capulet. Romeo does not know who Juliet is when he first laid eyes on her, but, even after knowing the truth, his love for her does not waver. In fact, he solidifies his decision to marry her when he asks Friar Laurence for help: Then plainly know my heart's dear love is set On the fair daughter of rich Capulet: As mine on hers, so hers is set on mine; And all combin’d, save what thou must combine By holy marriage: when, …show more content…

Our lives are precious, and because of this, we should not allow the opinions of others affect them. In order to live a long and satisfying life, we need to be able to make decisions based on the situations we are living through. Decisions should not solely be emotionally based but logically as well as a balance between the two can impact our life positively. The stories Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and “Popocatepetl and Ixtaccíhuatl” by Juliet Wood, depicts four lovers who heavily depend on others, to pave a path for them to take. The dependence on others ultimately lead to their lives being cut short.
First things first, Romeo and Juliet could have made decisions that would have led to a different outcome. Their whole entire “love” was drastically rushed into. They knew each for a whole day before they decided to get married. There is no way that anybody falls in love that quickly. It's not just the matter of time that could have prevented a few unnecessary events, but also Romeo’s repulsive “player” behavior.
Decisions, Not Fate 9/11, Pearl Harbor, The Black Plague, The Cambodian Genocide, and The Rape of Nanking. What do the things in this list have in common? “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo”(Shakespeare 478). Take a moment to think about this question:Which has a greater impact on the characters in the text: destiny or person choices? In the The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe the characters personal decisions are what caused the greatest impact on them. Personal choices had a greater impact on the characters in these texts. The first reason why personal choices had a greater impact on the stories characters is because if they had never made these decisions then destiny would have not had to take place.
When we think about a tragic love story, we think about Romeo and Juliet. The two were madly in love with each other but due to their households being hostile towards each other, they couldn’t properly be together due to the conflict between their families. However, the two ignored this problem and continue to pursue their undying love for each other. Love is very stubborn when it comes to decisions. Romeo and Juliet’s love is robust but their love has a ruthless future. As we progress through the pursuit of love that Romeo and Juliet were chasing after, love made decisions such as carelessness, recklessness, and unruliness. Romeo falls in love carelessly without getting to know the person he falls in love with. Since Romeo didn’t get to know his lover, he fell into the trap irony. He fell in love with an enemy.
Looking around a high school classroom and studying the faces of the students. Wondering about the choices they have made, universal choices that will permanently affect them and their future, like ripples on the water of a usually still lake. Contemplating where they would be if previous decisions had been decided in a different manner, curious where and who they would be. The decisions that they have previously made will continue to ripple and affect their lives. It truthfully really leaves a person wondering why humans are unable to base decisions off of other people’s mistakes whether fictional or real.

Jocko Willink, a popular author, once stated, “One of the key qualities a leader must possess is the ability to detach from the chaos, mayhem, and emotions in a situation and make good, clear decisions based on what is actually happening” (brainyquotes.com). This explains that if you are not able to control your emotions because of the situation you are in, you will never be able to be a leader because you won't be able to make clear decisions based on what's happening around you. Emotions can cause problems because they cause people to lose their judgment and not think logically. William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, discusses how when two teenagers let their emotions control their lives and don't make logical decisions,
