“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo”(Shakespeare 478). Take a moment to think about this question:Which has a greater impact on the characters in the text: destiny or person choices? In the The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe the characters personal decisions are what caused the greatest impact on them. Personal choices had a greater impact on the characters in these texts. The first reason why personal choices had a greater impact on the stories characters is because if they had never made these decisions then destiny would have not had to take place. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet for example, the choice Juliet made to take the potion caused her death in the end. Romeo thought she was dead so he killed himself with poison, then she found her love dead and stabbed herself so as to join him. “What if it be poison which the friar subtly hath minist’red to have me dead”(Shakespeare 456). What if she had not taken the poison? She could have ended up with Paris as a husband or she could have ran away with Romeo. Another example from Pyramus and Thisbe is “They decided that that very night they would try to slip away”(Ovid 488). If they wouldn’t have snuck out that night maybe they would still both be alive.
