Mark Twain Tons of writers use their pasts to influence their style of writing. Writers have used their past for centuries to write. Mark Twain is known as one of the greatest writers of his time. He uses his sense of humor and irony to captivate readers. Mark Twain’s books give us knowledge of the past and the events of his life. He experienced America’s growth and change and along the way‚ and most of the time had something to say about the changes in his country. His writing has changed the way people write for now and centuries to come. Because of his early life, events around him, and writing style, Mark Twain has been known to be the greatest American writer in his time. Mark Twain’s history is just as important as his writings. Mark Twain was born on November 30‚ 1835 in Florida‚ Missouri‚ the sixth of seven children. At the age of 4‚ Sam and his family moved to the small town of Hannibal‚ Missouri. Missouri was a fairly new state and held part of the country’s western border. He accomplished a ton during his lifetime not including his contributions to American literature. He earned the Master of Arts Degree from Yale University, Doctor of Letters Degree from Yale University, Doctor of Letters Degree from Oxford University, and the fastest typesetter in Missouri (Truslow 1). He was born during a time when the United States was fairly new. His life was filled with ideas of slavery and war. Even though he was a southerner, Twain believed that slavery was wrong. His involvement in river trade was halted because of the Civil war. He wrote the story “Luck” based on a soldier in the Civil War. Twain eventually made his way to Nevada and California. This was during a time called the Gold Rush. At first he went find gold and silver, but he ended up being broke after the first year and had to head back home.
