How Did Greek Culture Influence Western Civilization

The ancient Greeks provided us with the building blocks of Western civilization. Their influences remain with us even in modern times. Western philosophy builds upon the ideas of Greek philosophers, such as Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates. The value we place upon an educated society is an ideal we share with the ancient Greeks. They also brought us the principles of democracy which we employ in our government (Akins). Much of the devices used in our stories and media today were codified by the Greeks, such as the formulas for drama, tragedy and comedy.

Sadly, the Greek's time in the sun didn't last forever. Luckily, they passed much of their knowledge on to the Romans. The Romans expanded upon that knowledge, broadening the fields of warfare and engineering in particular. Even one of the most popular religions today was spread by way of Rome. Christianity, although not a Roman invention, may not have spread as readily throughout Europe were it not for the Roman Empire's adoption of it as a state religion. Greco-Roman influence faltered during this time. The cultures of the Franks and Goths replaced it. The power vacuum left behind by the Romans allowed various lords and the Church to create a feudal system (Akins). The Pope held most of the power at the time, as he held the power to excommunicate kings, weakening the legitimacy of their throne (Wood). The serfs lived in miserable conditions, and were a poorly educated and highly religious population. Illiteracy was important to the church, because it meant that only the clergy could interpret scripture. Eventually the Church decided to retake the Holy Land from the Muslims.
