Heart Soul and Mind Exploration 101
This English class has been an amazing learning experience for me. It made me grow as a writer, I am now more convinced when I write and can express myself more effectively, so readers understand what it is exactly that they’re reading about. Although I didn’t get off to a great a start in this course and if I had to do it over again, there are definitely some things that I could have done better. Interacting with my peers on the discussion board, made me learn a few things about working with others and the Smart thinking was helpful as well. However, above all the things I learned from this course, the most was about myself. The knowledge

When first presented to the whole “Triple Decker Paragraphs” also experienced as the “Jane Shaffer Method” was overwhelming and seemed way too complex. This is because this type of paragraph consists of eleven sentences that include three chunks. I watched the video that was part of our assignment and took notes and viewed the power point on this subject, which helped me better understand the purpose of CD’s and CM’s. In the power point presentation, how they used different colored text to show how the pattern made when writing this type of paragraph was very helpful. Adding the meat and extras to my paragraph was a good format to use if you really want the reader to understand your point of view. In essay three I went through and added concrete detail and commentaries to all of my paragraphs, making sure the 1:2 ratio was applied for each chunk. Although I did well developing “Triple Decker Paragraph”, there were areas and assignments that I did not perform as well and know that I could have performed …show more content…
Posting our outlines and rough draft and proofreading others papers on the discussion board helped me enhance and get a clearer look at my writing. Sometimes when writing an essay, during the process of thinking my mind will go blank, and hours go by with no progress made. That’s why it’s a good idea to get someone to step in and give their opinion this helps me refresh and think clearer. I learned that getting another perspective of my writing is a good way to find what areas need adjustment and what revision to consider for improving the overall strength of my essay. The Writing Center I learned about this semester is a useful resource students' can utilize to assist with writing essays It allows students to submit an essay to Smartthinking, which then a tutor will review the essay and send back a revised copy. Nevertheless, other than learning the advancement my writing acquires from working with others, I learned more about
This course was comprised of many learning activities; each was designed to help me achieve the course learning outcomes. I have taken two college English classes in the past; however, it has been several years since my last college class. I have some experience in writing and this class definitely helped me get back into writing. I often have trouble brainstorming and capturing the subject I need to write about. This class definitely helped me overcome the challenges I faced in writing and being able to effectively express my ideas in a clear and concise manner. Not to mention, it definitely helped build my writing foundation through a step by step approach to each assignment. Therefore, this class bolstered my writing and communication skills.
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
In the course of this spring semester, I have learned so many things that have been beneficial to me when comprehending critical writing as well as writing it. Developing critical thinking skills was one of the most things I personally enjoyed learning from this class such as how to generate my own writing, how to expand yourself and others in your writing with a more complex vocabulary. Another writing strategy that I learned this semester was how to write a persuasive essay in APA formatting. I was already introduced to this way of writing when I was in high school, however we never got the chance to practice using it. This has showed me how to be organized with my writing while collecting the writer´s ideas and information from any type
My Writing Center session gave me ideas to improve my essay, and it helped me gain more confidence in my writing.
From day one I knew I would face some challenges with this class just bases off of past experiences with English classes overall. Not being a native speaker and having dyslexia have been two big hurdles but I can say this class has made me over all a more knowledgeable writer. Each assignment given was something different and something interesting. The one that left the biggest impact on me was the Sister Flowers story by Maya Angelou. I’ve always been a fan of her work and the fact that I got to read something by her in my English class was amazing. Most of the classes I’ve attended have been very euro centric barely deviating from that path but here there was plenty of variety from the racial backgrounds of the authors to the topics themselves. My strengths as a writer have always been in the passion I can channel into my writing. That skill really came to birth as a way to balance out my lack of proper grammar with sheer emotional impact. An example of this I believe was in my essay entitled Glossy “I felt the rage tinged with fear claw at my stomach and wrap around my neck constricting my breathing.” Although my English may not be the best I’ve found ways to convey certain emotions. Although I have some strengths naturally I have weaknesses as well.
This essay will be a self-evaluation of my writing style, and the improvements I have made over the past three months. Before I took this class I had not written a paper since the last time I was in college. That was around 2004, my major was computer software. For that major there isn’t a whole lot of writing involved. This was more of a refresher class than anything. To be honest I was a little intimidated, for the simple reason I had not written anything like this since high school. I will discuss how I discovered my writing process. My development as a writer throughout this semester, and finally I will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of my essays.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe
When I first started the class I was struggling a lot. Since English is my second language, I had many stressful moments that made me think about dropping my classes. But when I thought about my future, I just kept studying even harder, waiting for my performance to improve. As a result, I felt like every time I wrote an essay, it got easier, which tells me that I’m on the right path. In addition, this class has helped me improve my grammar, taught me an important life lesson about sticking on my goal and helped me to enhance my computer skills
I believe that everyone should take at least a few college classes throughout their life. College is for everyone, even for those who did not go to a college right after high school. College might not be a top priority in everyone 's life. Even though it may not be a top priority, going to college is a very selfless act in which the national community benefits from. Even as a parent, a growth and developmental psychology class can help a parents realize why their child are acting a certain way, and even develop methods to boost a child 's confidence. If someone is unhappy with their career choice, college is a great way to learn what career choices are more
Throughout my time in Honors English, I have learned many valuable things. It is hard to learn new concepts in an English class, because it is a class that everyone has since starting school. The group of kids that I attend this class with are not easy to handle, and we often upset teachers with our rude and opinionated comments. Our English class has been geared toward opening up to others and finding ourselves. We have learned a lot about our peers and ourselves throughout this semester, and we have learned about poetry, literature, and other topics. I have learned a lot about my classmates, myself, and I found my new favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird.
Class this semester has been good. It was a well taught and constructed course. The atmosphere was always enjoyable unlike a few of my classes. Professor Airek created an open environment that let me as a student feel as ease communicating and being involved in class. We’ve shared many laughs and I’ve grown as a writer and as a student. I’ve learned that essays need to be turned in on time and stapled together. But most of all, I have learned to “never give up.”
Coming into college as a freshman is not easy. We are on our own in a way for the first time, there are many struggles such as making friends, learning a new schedule and balancing it all. These and many more are the problems that I faced when I first came here. But what I learned that we all have the same problems. Any thing that I might be going through, they were also struggling with the same problem as well. It helped me because I felt like we could all relate to our problems and kind of help one another figure it out. I learned that I wasn't the only one going through these problems, and that they had even more problems than I did.
This class has allowed me to think more openly because I feel that my classmates and professor allowed me to express my opinion regardless of the opinions of others. This has helped me be more involved in discussions because I felt that I could express myself without others being judgmental and it has helped me become more of an optimistic person. I surprised myself at times because I am usually a quite person and rarely express my opinion but, Professor Hall did a fantastic job in designing the course which allowed us to interact with other classmates on a personal level and allowed us to be more open with one another. I felt this course has boosted my confidence level to perceiver at greater level than I initially thought I was capable of. I enjoyed this class overall because, I know that I have changed in areas that I thought I was incapable of changing. I’ve also learned that to be a great writer I must be more open and not stray away from expressing my opinion and it has shaped me into not only a better writer but, a person as well.
This English class has indeed helped me grow over the course load and lectures. For example, I now know how to write about a topic that I am not interested in whatsoever. Many of the English classes before this one, I did not have to apply myself as much which helped me not care about the topic being discussed. However, being in a difficult collegiate class, I must try my best whether I am interested in the assignment or
It is my belief that through this class and the tools provided, that my growth as a writer has grown through leaps and bounds I would never have assumed possible. It is not so much the skill I refer to, although I would think skill has gone up in some levels as well, but more so the appreciation for the craft of writing itself. Intially, at the start of this class my sole goal was to further my understanding and appreciation of the writer's and books that I so love to read. Through further evaluation within the first week, a few other goals came to mind, of which were, making writing a habit, finishing what I start, stop second guess my writing skills and making effective use of detail and description. Through the use of the many articles, various reading materials, whether poems or short stories, and especially through the workshop, I feel I was able to really push myself to accomplishing these goals. I have thus far learned how important it is not to be skilled at writing per say, but to have the will to write, that poetry is as much about it's sound as it is about it's subject, just how important character development is, how the narration and point of view of a story is essential to the way the story is told, and just how much of a difference peer's critiques can make to your writing.
