Harry Potter Hero Journey

In the late 1940’s a man named Joseph Campbell shared his Mythic principal with the world. He explains that there is a three-stage formula that he calls a Hero Journey which is the structure of every story. Though most stories are completely different on the outside, the stories are almost structured around these three stages. Stage 1 is the hero leaves the everyday world and enters another world. While Stage 2 the hero is challenged by opposing forces and must pass a series a test throughout the movie. That will then determine who will be victorious, either the hero or the opposing forces. Stage 3 is tied into Stage 2 because if the hero is victorious, they will return to the ordinary world with a gift for the world.

In this film, Harry Potter experiences the three stages of the rite of passage by Arnold Van Gennep. In the first stage, separation, the participant is identified to be symbolically departed from their old self, “the person is detached from the roles and obligations that have been associated with their lives up until that time” (Nye 2008, 146). This stage begins for Harry when Rubeus Hagrid arrives at Harry’s home and convinces Harry to attend the “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”. Hagrid informs Harry about his family history, and gets Harry to comply when he says “Best be off”. Human beings are like heroes, they have their own journeys to partake on, most of the time this journey is called "life". And just like heroes human beings have their own nemesis, their own sets of trials and challenges to conquer, goals and motives to achieve, as well as a mindset to be able to prove themselves to others that they are capable. In his theory, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" talks about the hero going through a series of process the main ones being the hero's "retreat from the world" meaning the separation or departure of the hero, the hero's "initiation" in other words his triumphs

The American author, teacher, and mythologist, Joseph John Campbell, is universally known for his work in comparative folklore and culture. His studies led him to discover the pattern, journey of the hero. The sequence consists of three stages and exists in many dealings with Greek mythology as well as current popular culture. A modern example of the occurring cycle is the 2001 production, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. In the film, an orphaned young boy named Harry Potter is invited to study at Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is used to describe a layout of events, whether they are mundane or not. These steps can be applied to almost any adventure. The popular movie Back to the Future is a perfect example of just that.

What is a hero? What qualities does he or she have? In our modern lives when we think of a hero we think of nurses and soldiers, but according to the American Heritage Dictionary, a hero in mythology and legend is a man or woman, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.

The Hero’s journey, or in its more correct terminology the Monomyth is an object from the area of comparative mythology. Its definition in the most basic of forms, it is a pattern or outline that is used in storytelling, usually the myth. This pattern is found in many famous pieces from all around the world. In the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces from 1949 by author Joseph Campbell, this pattern is described in detail. Campbell describes that numerous myths from different times and areas of the world seem to share an identical structure in their storytelling. He summarized this with a well-known quote found at the intro of his book:

Although Harry Potter directly connects to Seger’s 10-point analysis of creating a hero’s myth, there are some differences as well. One of which is in Seger’s third point that says the Hero is reluctant to leave their old boring life for the new adventurous life. In Star Wars Luke Skywalker is called to leave his old life twice but is not necessarily ready to go until he returns home and finds his aunt and uncle dead. At this time he almost has no other option but to accept the call to his new exiting but unknown future. This is not the case for Harry. As soon as Harry receives his telegram that states he is accepted into Hogwarts, he is immediately ready to leave the “muggle” life with the Durselysand take on his new life of magic. There was no reluctant behavior from Harry, quite the contrary, Harry is full of big smiles and curiosity for what is to come.

A journey to save his mother from harm and to save the world from disaster from the Gods up above. This is a hero’s journey, a hero’s journey is someone who falls into adventure to slay the dragon and is idealized for his courage. The hero travels to one place to another going through a series of stages that help him complete his quest. It starts off first, the hero lives an ordinary life but is unique in some way that sets him apart from everyone else. At the end of the series, Harry finally defeats Voldemort, ending his terror on the magical world. Nineteen years after the battle that ended it all, Harry now works in the Ministry for Magic along with his best friends, Ron and Hermione (who is now the Minister for Magic, or Prime Minister in our world). From living with his aunt and uncle and sleeping under the stairs to his life being completely changed around to practicing magic and becoming one of the most well-known wizards in history. The character Harry Potter in the well-known book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone” is an astonishing example of how the hero cycle is applied to the protagonist. Harry is living his most ordinary life in the regular world and suddenly the call to adventure approached him when Harry begins to receive mysterious letters. Refusal of the call comes next and after that the meeting of the mentor. Secondly, the crossing of the threshold is used when Harry joins the wizarding world. Tests, Allies and enemies when he arrives at Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardry. Approach when the trio prepare themselves to face Voldemort. Ordeal death and rebirth, reward and seizing the sword. Lastly. The road back when Harry, Ron and Hermione try and face Voldemort. Resurrection and the return of the elixir.
