Harry Houdini once said,“No prison can hold me; no hand or leg irons or steel locks can shackle me. No ropes or chains can keep me from my freedom.” They life Houdini lived was nothing short of extraordinary and he was called by many the greatest showman and magician of all time. Houdini started began his carrer as a trapeze artist then moved on to simple card tricks which eventually evolved into the escape arts that he is known for. He started as nothing and made it all the way to be the leading magician of his time. He drew crowds by the thousand to watch his performances and was entertaining as well as captivating. He put in thousands of hours just performing not to mention practicing and conditioning his body (Houdini Discovery Channel, 2014). It was said as an adult he began to start running and keeping his body in peak performance so that he could better perform his act’s. There were other things that played into him being successful but all-in-all he worked hard and long so that he could become as good as he was (Hooper, 2017). He became a master in his trade due to relentless practice and conditioning for years and because of this he became the extremely successful person that everyone knows today. One reason Harry Houdini became extremely successful due to timing. His timing was especially lucky in the way that he was born into a generation who lived through world war II and afterward were seeking some relief from the hard times. Towards the end of his lifetime he was living in the era of entertainment when the radio and the tv became exceedingly popular and everyone was going out in search of entertainment (BBC, 2014). Theodore helped Harry up until the point when harry married Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner or bess for short and she took over helping Harry perform (Hooper, 2017). He also received some help from Martin Beck a man that told Houdini that he should focus on his escape acts and then proceeded to book him for the Orpheum Vaudeville circuit. Beck was Houdini’s big break(About Us Page). Houdini’s success can at least be partially attributed to the support he received from people in his life.Houdini’s success can also be contributed to the fact that what he did was to him, meaningful work. Houdini fell in love with magic at a young age and picked it up as a way of making money to help support his family (Porter, 2011). The constantly changing and adapting of his work so that he could compete with the best escape artist of his time also made the work challenging and engaging for him.
