The Greatest Showman The passionate, exaggerated; P.T. Barnum is known to the world as the “Greatest Showman” for his impactful role in entertainment. Barnum was one of the most influential showmen of all time because he used his gifts, talents, and skills in order to better the lives of the people around him. Not only was Barnum a fantastic showman, but was also a politician and businessman. Even though Barnum was involved with other professions, he said of himself, “I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me,” (Kunhardt). But, on July 13, 1865 the museum really did burn to the ground. It was one of the most “spectacular” fires New York City had ever seen (P.T. Barnum Wikipedia). The public could see animals jumping from the building, but many were burned to death. Two beluga whales that had been exhibited were boiled to death in their tanks during the fire (P.T. Barnum Wikipedia). This fire did not bring Barnum down, but instead led him to recreate the idea of the circus. After the fire, Barnum needed to turn to a new plan that continued to bring delight to people all over the world. Barnum’s next greatest success was his circus. He called it the “Greatest Show on Earth.” Even though P.T. Barnum’s greatest achievement was his circus, he did not enter into the business until the age of sixty (P.T. Barnum Wikipedia). His job was to put dynamite into a hole, one day he struck some dynamite causing the metal pole to go right through his head. When it went through his head he was conscience through it all. He went to the doctors. They had to remove the metal pole, put their fingers on both sides of the wound and pull out bits of mental, skull, and brain. The doctor’s then had to drain some of the fluid through gages nose. Which is pretty gross. Phineas was alive, he could still walk and talk. His family said his attitude changed and he got more bossy and was so impatient.

The cow kicked over the lantern and the fire spread quickly because Chicago had almost all wood buildings. The Chicago Fire ended on October 10, 1871. The firefighters put out the fire but not before almost everything was destroyed and left almost 100,000 homeless and 300 + dead.
The circus is a wonderful and breathtaking experience and most people dream about going to a circus. The circus is full of exciting, fun activities, bright lights and the smell of crackerjack. Although the circus may seem like a fantastic idea, the circus during the Great Depression behind the closed curtains are not. During the Great Depression there was not much regulation which led to the mistreatment of the circus workers and the animals in the menagerie. Since it is during this time period, food and money were incredibly scarce. Workers were often times left unpaid and hungry, and sometimes even red lighted, which is the act of throwing someone off of a moving train which was done in order to save money in the circus. This is seen in the novel, Water for Elephants, and Sara Gruen highlights the imperfections of the circus. There also was not enough caretakers for the exotic animals in the menagerie and the animals were often times mistreated. Because of the Great Depression nothing was regulated or enforced so the money hungry circus owner operated business as he so desired. In Water for Elephants highlights the theme throughout the entire novel how deceiving the really is, but how the audience continues to perceive

Where he has those who praise him, he also has those that are disgusted by him and the career path he has selected to partake in. No matter the views of the commentators, in the words of many “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”.
