I honestly do not know much about the constellations and am taking this class to learn more. I am choosing Capricornus because it is my zodiac sign and has some interesting mythology behind it. Capricornus is represented by a creature that is half fish/half goat and the name means "goat horn". The constellation itself is made up of three main stars that form a triangle and within that area there are many mysteries. There are star clusters and galaxies that are over 400 million light years away from Earth and even a planet (Neptune) contained within Capricornus.
The Greeks associate the constellation with Pan, the god of nature. Pan helped Zeus fight the Titans to earn his spot in the heavens. He escaped the monster Typhon by jumping into
The constellation was named after Princess Andromeda, also known as "The Chained Woman" - wich is, too, the nickname of the own constellation -. Andromeda was known for her beauty, and her mom one day claimed that she was even more beautiful then the Nereids, a particularly alluring group of sea nymphs. The Nereids were outraged by the affirmation and decided to ask Poseidon, the God of The Seas to give her a lesson. Poseidon then send a monster to destroy Andomedra's father's territory, and Andomedra decided to sacrifice herself to pay for the sins of her mother, and then was given chained to Poseidon to die. The story goes on, and it ends with Perseus - the son of Poseidon - saving her, but that's the bit that named the constellation.
I have chosen the constellation Leo. I have chosen Leo because it is my horoscope sign. The real name of the constellation Leo is leonis which in translation means "the lion". Leo's right ascention is 11 hours, and its declination is 15 degrees. Leo is made up of 11 stars(regulus, denebola, algiebra, zosma, ras elased australius, adhafera, chort, al minliar asad, alterf, ras elesed borialas, subra). There are millions upon millions of stars that light up the night sky. Some of these stars are grouped together in a way that creates a shape or figure; these shapes have been studied for thousands of years by people all around the world. Some civilizations have even dedicated stories to these figures in the sky; most of these shapes or constellations have their origins in Greek and Roman mythology. The constellation I chose as my favorite is Taurus, the bull. While Taurus is one of the constellations featured in the zodiac, my reasons for choosing it as my favorite constellation are not in relation to the story of Zeus and Europa; I chose Taurus because the Pleiades or "Seven Sisters" (a star cluster) are located inside of the constellation.
The constellation that I have chosen is Capricornus. Capricornus is one of the twelve zodiac constellations, and it symbolizes the sea-goat. The best time to see this constellation would be at ten o'clock at night in September and October, especially if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. I chose this constellation because according to Astrology I am a Capricorn and thought it would be interesting to know more about the constellation relating to my zodiac sign. Capricornus has five stars with planets in it's constellation.
The constellation I have chosen is Capricornus (Capricorn), otherwise known as The Goat. This constellation is one of the zodiacs, the dates being Dec 22- Jan 20. Its name is Latin for "horned goat" or "goat horn", and it is commonly represented in the form of a sea-goat: a mythical creature that is half goat, half fish. It was one of the constellations originally catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. Capricornus is the 40th biggest constellation in the sky, occupying an area of 414 square degrees. Capricornus has three stars with known planets and also contains a Messier object, M30 (NGC 7099). The brightest star in the constellation is Deneb Algedi, Delta Capricorni. Capricornus . I chose this constellation because
Mythologists say that the constellation represents Laelaps, a dog so fast that no prey could outrun it. This dog had a long list of owners. The most likely version says that he was given by Zeus to Europa, whose son Minos, gave him to Procris. The dog was given to her along with a javelin that could never miss.

The constellation I have decided to study is Sagittarius, I have chosen this as it is my own zodiac sign, the word Sagittarius comes from the Latin word for archer and is usually shown to be a centaur readying to fire an arrow, it has the appearance of a stick figure firing an arrow at Scorpius, the collection of the constellation's brightest stars are known as The Teapot. The alpha star in Sagittarius is called Rukbat and the brightest star is called Epsilon. Sagittarius is near the centre of the galaxy and so has a large concentration of stars and other celestial bodies.
Greek myths and legends are all about the gods and heroes of the ancient Greek people. The ancient Greeks thought that the constellation Scorpius is a scorpion. It was related to hunter Orions death. There are many stories about Orions death, but according to my favourite one, he wanted to kill all the earth's wild animals. The earth goddess Gaia was not pleased with this. She got mad and sent a giant scorpion after Orion. No matter how hard Orion tried, he could not defeat the scorpion and tried to escape, when the scorpion stung him to death. As a reward, Gaia placed the scorpion's image in the nighttime sky. To this day it looks as if the scorpion is always chasing Orion.
The constellation I have chosen is Cancer. I chose this constellation because it is my zodiac sign. Cancer is Latin for "Crab", The name was chosen because the representation of the the constellation is in fact a crab. The constellation is 506 sq. degrees and made up of faint stars.
Gemini is the constellation I have chosen to use in my essay. The reason for that is my zodiac sign is Gemini, and it's the constellation I am most familiar with. Gemini is composed of several stars, the most popular being Pollux and Casper, the two 'heads' of the constellation. The greek myth where Gemini is orinated from is of two twin brothers -the stars- Pollux and Casper. The constellation is seen between the constellations, Taurus and Cancer.
