1.) Explain with definitions and examples the concept of culture and elaborate on the barriers to becoming culturally competent communicators.
In our textbook, Real Communications by O’Hair, Wiemann, Mullin and Teven, culture is defined as, “a learned system of thought and behavior that belongs to and typifies a large group of people”. In short, culture is the way we do things that is the same as people where we came from. It can vary not only from country to country, but even different parts of the city. It is part of an identity through which we see the world and can affect how we interpret information, especially speeches and body language. Culture includes lots of things such as languages, fashion, music, art, customs, and slang.
In communications, culture can impact the way a speech is delivered. An example of a barrier could be improper language. In my German 202 class we were required to write quite a few essays and every single one I wrote I got points off for using “odd phrases”. I would try to

How does it differ from the time of the ancient Greeks? Specifically focus on the relevance and applicability of ethos, logos, and pathos in today’s world. You can use examples from media as well as personal encounters.
Persuading people can be a tricky thing to do. On one hand you want to sway them to your side with logical reasoning, and on the other hand you want to not overwhelm them or people who already agree with you. You have to find a balance between facts, logic, and emotions while still making sure you can convey your message.
The way we persuade people today differs with internet and easier access to information. For decades we have had a growing number of resources due to the increased amount of published material and the number of works that have been translated. The internet is a way that makes searching through these incredibly faster, which can change how ethos, logos and pathos are
The first of two notable periods of Greek immigration to the United States began in the 1800s and continued until the 1920s. According to chnm.gmu.edu (n.d.), the economic crisis in Greece caused many Greek families to send their sons to the United States to make money to send back home to Greece. The second wave of Greek immigration occurred after World War II with the passage of Immigration and National Origins Act of 1965. This opened the door for many Greeks who had family already living in the United States, to come join them. The second generation of Greek Americans had been established by this time and they had established Greek communities as well as various businesses that were thriving.
Communicators who succeed in a diverse workplace must educate themselves about different cultures and co-cultures. Treating people from different cultural backgrounds with respect is essential. Finally, being willing to acknowledge and discuss cultural differences can help communicators understand and appreciate one another. The impact of culture and listening is very important in everyday life. Think about how many times you have had problems understanding someone from a different culture or even a different sub-culture. Greek Life is a very complex part of college campuses. While many schools have a strong Greek Life presence, others play a very small part on their campus. The same can be said when it comes to whether or not fraternities and sororities have a positive reputation or a negative reputation on campus and in their local media.

Culture is defined as set of customs, beliefs, and arts that differentiate one group of people from other. Humans have constantly traded goods across inordinate distances. Therefore, understanding cultural rules of conduct is a foundation for effective intercultural communication. Learning the culture of business confederates and recognizing what is believed to be rude can help avoid unintentional errors.
Civilizations refer to the cultural and ethical values that sustain a given society. Each civilization is a cultural entity that brings together a more or less conscious sense of unity, and that groups in its bosom several different nations and individuals. In my opinion, living in either civilization (Greek or Roman) as a women would've been quite difficult. However, if I were to choose between both civilizations, it would definitely be Ancient Greece, as it closely resembles our current one.
To persuade someone can be defined as convincing one to have the same outlook on something as oneself. People go about persuading one in several different ways. Persuasion can be as casual as an everyday conversation to as formal as a speech in front of millions of people. When the author states their purpose of persuasion, this is called their call to action. The call to action is usually the author’s final and last comment on their speech.
Mythology is the telling of traditional stories, legends that have been voiced, rewritten, forgotten, and told again over the centuries as these myths have been passed on from one generation to the next. Myths play a critical role in how a culture or religion has been constructed and how the human race looked at the world around them. Love folklore are common among many cultures and similarities can be found in even the most bizarre of stories. The first myth is a Babylonian tale of Ishtar and Tammuz, two lovers who were separated by death, but in their case, death did not do them part. The second myth is an almost identical tale, a Greek version, Orpheus and Eurydice, but their love story takes a tragic turn when death takes both
Another function a myth must meet is in explaining day to day functions. There are so many things that happen daily that people do not question why it happens. Some examples are the sun rising and setting, seasons, fire, games, etc. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Norse had myths that helped explain some of these things. The Egyptians really wanted to figure out how the earth worked. Many of their myths deal with animals or why the earth is the way it is. They also tried to figure out the universe. They had a myth about why the sun revolved around the earth (they believed that the sun revolved around the earth, not that the earth revolves around the sun).
An effective persuasive argument does not happen on it’s own. The topic at hand as well

The culture of Greece has been developed and has evolved over time for thousands of years. They have gone through many different hands. It started with Mycenaean Greece and then continued through the ranks. The Roman Empire held great influence and much of what we know about Greece has come from that time period. Then the hands changed with the Byzantine Empire, the Persian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Each left their mark and changed the culture that was there and added something new each time. Culture is a relative term to understand how people live and breathe, their traditions and religious practices etched forth the path that they are following. Much of what has been learned is from watching and copying, making it their own.
The planet in which we live, Earth, has existed for an estimated 4.5 billion years and humans have only inhabited it for 200,000 years. It is safe to say that Earth has seen many historical civilizations and organisms come and go or in other cases thrive, such as Greece. Despite previously being made up of many independent city-states, Greek citizens realized that their shared culture indeed united them. Ancient Greece was not nearly as united in the sense of community as it is today, but their way of thinking, ideas, and people have not only linked what was once small city-states but also paved the way for many Western regularities. Greek principles are still very much present in Western civilizations through their leading philosophies, a government ahead of its time, and their knowledge
