Environmentalism has become a great concern in all sectors of business, evidenced by the recent jump in energy prices, and empirical data provided by several different environmental and scientific agencies. The Hotel industry is no different, in fact, it would benefit greatly from the recent push for all businesses and business sectors to "Go Green." Yet, the industry has long resisted the changes, and is only recently catching up to other industries that have converted their operations to have greener strategies.
Hotels require meticulous upkeep and cleanliness in order to keep up with guests’ concerns and demand. As a result, cleaning and waste products, and their disposal have become a main issue as hotels attempt to participate in

Additionally, the study found that hotels with a non-financial reporting control system were more likely to adopt an environmental policy. In 1996, when this article was published, green policies were considered stratagems instead of bonafide, widespread business strategies for all hotels to take into consideration to participate in environmentally-responsible business practices. The author concludes that until environmental concerns become strategic issues added into the control system with rewards, the response will remain the same; green policies and practices will be considered stratagems.
Now, in 2008, this issue is of even more importance, and less of a device to attract business from the environmentally-aware demographic.Guest involvement in a more green hotel environment has become more apparent with a recent survey in the New York Times found that 16 percent of hotel guests chose where they will stay based on the environmentally-friendly options available to them and the practices of the hotel. A 2007, New York Times article titled, “Enjoy Your Green Stay,” states that green options for hotels have become widespread so quickly because of the rising cost of energy. It should be no coincidence that
In order to save the environment from pollution, businesses should consider having an environmentally-friendly operation. Protecting the environment is a key factor in going green that is beneficial to businesses and the environment. This topic is discussed in Ava Mohsenin’s article, “Can Businesses Be Environmentally Sustainable And Still Make Money?” Businesses stepping forward to lead a change in sustainability signifies there is profit and other benefits to being environmentally friendly. Additionally, Dupont is committed to “65% reduction and was saving $2.2B a year” through energy efficiency (Mohsenin). Kate L. Harrison, a communications marketing expert, explains in the article “10 Ways to Green Your Business and Save Money” that although some methods will not show profit immediately, business owners that use public transportation or have a fleet of hybrid vehicles can see an increase in profits over time. Furthermore, Mohsenin suggests that companies give their employees Prius’ in order to save money on gas and not pollute the air as much, similar to a brewing company that follows these

Additionally, on a socio-cultural level, many consumers feel that restaurants partaking in green initiatives and operations are doing their part to not only help sustain the earth but also to conserving natural resources (Hu, Parsa & Self, 2010). “Going green” is not simply a trend in the food service industry but around the world and in all forms of business. Corporate companies consider “going green” as a sensible business strategy in building recognition for corporate social responsibility among consumers concerned with environmental conservation efforts. Lastly, technological initiatives such as Energy Star appliances (dishwashers, refrigerators, ice machines, etc.) and faucets that use less water must also be analyzed in their ecological conservation capability and weighed against their financial costs (University of Notre Dame, 2014).

In the present, sustainability is increasingly seen as an important factor in our society, especially in organizations such as accommodation provider or tour company. According to Ullman (2009) Sustainability practice is very important, because all the actions that we make today will affect everything in the future, therefore we need to make flexible decisions at present in order to avoid some negative consequences. By adopting sustainability practices, companies are able to gain competitive edge, increase their market share, and boost shareholder value (Frandsen, Morsing, Vallentin, 2013). Sustainability issues does not always refer to environmental sustainability but also relate to economic and social sustainability. This report will discuss and identify the most important sustainability issues that Four Season Hotel Sydney is facing, then apply an appropriate tourism sustainability criteria and assess how this hotel is addressing sustainability, finally talk about how to improve sustainability practices and recommendations.
The conduct or the operation of any business anywhere in the world brings with it a number of environmental concerns. These range from the emission of harmful gases, such as carbon (VI) oxide, into the environment and contributions to the depletion of the ozone layer, thus furthering global warming. It is however impossible to exist in this modern world without industries and business, as many would be unemployed and further lack various necessities due to a lack of industries and businesses (Forbes, 2011). Therefore, sustainability should be considered with regard for the environment in that actions should not adversely affect the environment to the extent that future generations will find it unlivable . Many of the leading organizations
As we can see , environmental challenges in recent years have increased the trend of “going green” in businesses like never before. There are two main factors that are currently pushing toward environmental-friendly business practices, harsher international and local regulations, and the high fluctuations of fossil-fuel prices.
“To get a sense of what is possible and perhaps even advisable in the sustainability realm requires benchmarking against a set of companies that have taken a leadership position on environmental or social issues—or against an established set of sustainability best practices.” (Esty & Simmons, 2011) Because the LEED certification is the most popular certification amongst IAVM members including convention center facilities, benchmarking and actively working to be certified using these standards has been the San Diego Convention Center’s strategic approach to sustainability. This method provides a foundation for the San Diego Convention Center to understand what is being done by competitors and what the key performance indicators are of sustainability.
In today’s day and age, everyone is concerned about the environment. Our society is increasingly encouraged to “go green,” to do our part in making the world a cleaner, more eco-friendly place. Green marketing is one major strategy being used to promote such efforts, but is it effective? There is some debate about this concept, including the history of green marketing, the problems with green marketing so far, the effectiveness of marketing schemes like Sunchips and Toyota, and the strategies that could be used to increase the ability of green marketing. While protecting our planet is a noble concept, its execution seems to be a little vague. Of all the aspects concerning green marketing, one thing is clear: our planet still has a long
In recent years, environmental issues are being a fundamental topic around the world as the public have been aware of the risks to our planet because of the harmful human being, such as deforestation, over-consumption of energy, different kinds of pollution, over-construction, which are incurring serious climate change and global warming. The replacement on the Millenium Development Goals to 17 sustainable development goals also alerted people to concern about how to make a better environment in a sustainable way under a high density urban city, where there are constructions contributed to this community. Especially in hotel industry, a surge of travelers leaded to the increase of hotel, which required plenty of land, energy and resources to achieve this huge demand. However, there are several factors we need to consider before the launch of the project, which are how to design a sustainable green hotel with a long term vision instead of becoming a ‘stranded asset’ in the future. So, in the following is my location and design of my hotel, considering environmental factors and integrating five sustainable development principles in my concept.
The state of our environment and the increasing consumption of its natural resources have become of growing concern to the earth’s population. This issue is attributed to our contribution towards global warming through the emission of greenhouse gases; our pollution of the environment; and our booming population growth complemented by the increase in per capita consumption (Anderton, 2007; Ehrlich & Ehrlich, 2008). All of the above have had environmental impacts which include, amongst others, the degradation and depletion of natural resources; climate change; natural disasters and even detriment to human health (Khan & Ghouri, 2011).
Many hotels utilize sustainability as a strategy setting for operations, and as a critical success factor (Boerner, 2010). A company become more sustainable by evaluating the positive and negative environmental, economic, and socio cultural impacts on hospitality industry and helps the operation to be in profit and minimize waste or harmful aspects. Environmental certification program for hotels Provides technical guidance. Participating facilities area warded between 1and5 Green Keys depending on loyalty to criteria (LRA Worldwide,
According to Myunget al. (2012), the purpose of green practices is to reduce the impact on the environment by applying environmentally preferred practices by reducing the waste and used sustainable resources and supplies. Therefore, for those owner of green hotel are also advocating the green practices of business activities, “less environmentally
It must make sure that all the employees are aware of the causes behind implementing the eco-friendly practices. So, it must conduct regular seminars, workshops, and employee training sessions. There have been several instances where the economic downturn has greatly affected the goals and objectives of the hotel. As they were focusing on many activities at the same time, they could not manage timely payment of the staffs. They were focusing on increasing the volume of business, so they had to interact with many buyers and sellers.
