Schools in Orange county Florida have began to reduce or cancel recess all together so that students can spend more time in the classroom. But they are not alone administrators across the US are making similar changes. “In a nation of increasingly obese kids, getting rid of recess makes no sense.” (Caplan & Igel, 2015, para. 1) The reason behind all of removing kids from there minutes of free time and adding class time is due to common core examinations. There was not enough time in the day for teachers to be able to teach what the students needed in order to pass the test while still allowing their recess time.
Parents whose child goes to school where recess has been eliminating have now begun to fight for there child’s right to play outside.
Most teachers want good attitudes, but they won’t get any without recess. People are fighting back against this. Moms are mad that their kids get off the bus sad, “ unfair that my 9-year-old was being denied something as basic as a respite from her classroom “. This article wants to tell that their kids are not getting enough recess,
This proposal serves as a detailed description as to why I believe that elementary school students should be required more free recess time. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) highlights the important of recess because it help the children create social skills that can lead to a happy and healthy adult life. Not only would longer or more recesses promote socialization but also promote a healthier life style for the children. Over the past few years we have begun to notice and trend in childhood obesity and through more recess we can promote a more active and for healthy lifestyle. Free play time has been shown to produce higher cognitive performance and better memory. Schools should not be restricting recess time because they see recess
The theme of this reflective account is engaging children in participation, and enabling children to have a voice. The Every child matters documentation (Department for Education 2010) focuses on the important role of the adult in enabling children to make decisions and encouraging them to participate and make a positive contribution. As a result through this account, how children in my setting are encouraged to participate in the outdoor play space will be explored. A small piece of research was carried out which will be reflected on, as will theory relating to children making a positive contribution in the early years.
If we want our children to become more active then we need to find ways to provide areas where they can safely plan and interact with other children. We need to encourage community members to actively participate in opportunities to create a healthier community. A partnership with community members is needed to make the changes necessary to promote and provide access to safe recreational areas for children. In the short term while we are trying to find ways to clean up existing playgrounds and build new ones, we need schools to open gyms and sports fields during non-school hours so children can play safely after school, on the weekend and over summer vacation. Creating affordable after school programs, summer programs and free or low cost summer camps for low-income families is a place to start while working on building more and safer playgrounds. There are challenges regarding cleaning existing playgrounds or creating new ones. Neighborhoods or schools lack the resources to provide playgrounds, parks and after school programs and some neighborhoods are unsafe for children. Parents can become advocates for their children by writing letters to school administrators and board members. Encourage local officials to install park equipment, bike paths and safer
One major reason why people support structured recess is because, “Recently, policy makers and funding organizations have called for more opportunities for daily activity as a means to address childhood obesity.” (Text 1, Lines 4-6). Structured recess lets students be able to play the same activity. This means that there will be less conflict because students often don’t agree with playing the same activity. For example, one group of students would want to play basketball while another group would want to play football. This doesn’t work out too well, and structured recess would fix that issue. “More children can actively participate in regular activity, irrespective of skill level.” (Text 1, Line 22). Structured recess can also be “a time for the child to make a personal choice between sedentary, physical, creative, or social options.” (Text 1, Lines 14-15). By allowing a structured recess, “Older elementary children may benefit from game instruction and encouragement for total class inclusion.” (Text 1, Lines
Ultimately, middle school student should have recess. Although some may say that recess takes away learning time for play time, which they can do during gym class they are wrong. Recess helps student be able to concentrate better in their afternoon classes, so that they can learn things quicker. Which overall they will learn more in the school year if they have recess. It may take away learning time but without recess by the end of the day teens are daydreaming. And will take way longer to learn things that should take them 5 minutes. Recess also gives students a time to make their own decisions and learn how to communicate with others when they get jobs. It also keeps students active and healthy so that they are able to come to school healthy
Gesell Institute states, “With playtime and recess being eliminated from schools in exchange for more test and desk work, children are being denied the ability to engage and expand their social skills and relationships, which not all educators realize” (Gesell Institute). Schools are rushing children’s development by making them do skills that they are not ready to do. A child will learn how to do simple tasks like draw a triangle, but forcing them to do it at a younger age and not letting them experience childhood by putting pressure on the child to learn faster is not inspiring them to learn and be creative (Gesell Institute).
My first reason why I think schools should have recess in middle schools recess increases concentration.
Secondary schools should not have recess. The are many reasons why secondary schools should not have recess. It is harder to keep their regular lesson on schedule. " He says other teachers tell him the recesses make it harder to keep regular lessons on schedule. " This is one reason why secondary schools should not have recess.
Recess is a time for kids to take a break from their class work, it’s typically 15-20 minutes and it helps them release their energy built up from sitting still all day. Many middle schools do not have recess fit into their schedule because it is too much class time wasted. I believe that middle schools should have recess because it allows the students to release energy, it allows the brain to have a break, and it can help the students exercise.
In the fast paced world in which we live one can see the trickle down effect of that pace seaping into our school systems. With the mandates No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) brought to the table in 2002 school districts are finding themselves using every spare minute of the day to prepare students for rigorous standardized tests used to not only determine success of the students but also the school and staff. Schools are trying to squeeze more information in an already busy day. When looking at schedules it is a given that children need to eat, forcing schools to not take lunch away, so the only logical solution is to
The general argument made by Steve Rushin in his work “Give the Kids a Break,” is that shortening or taking away recess all together for young children is hurting their well overall well being deeply. More specifically, he argues that recess which he refers to as “a universal human need” is being taken away in order to prevent bullying and lawsuits. He writes that taking away recess to prevent bullying is “like scalping in an effort to end dandruff.” He also writes of his own time in elementary school saying that all of his recesses would end “like round 8 of a prize fight.” He goes on to tell his own tales of the many injuries and torture from older kids that he endured reminding us that despite the harshness of the playground he turned out
Parents and administrators have been wondering of sports are literally helping, or harming education. Schools have had after-school activities for decades, but this has made too difficult for many students to finish their work. Therefore, sports should be removed to increase the ability to save money, improve grades, and give kids the opportunity to pay more attention in class.
With these long school days children don’t have much time to go out and be a kid. By the time children get home and finish all their homework, there really isn’t much time for sports or spending time with friends and family. Long hours of school put too much pressure on students. According to the state, students are supposed to have three and a half hours of homework a night. Students are assigned about 17 hours of homework a week. There is a total of 168 hours in a week and 64 of those hours are taken from us by school and homework. Out of the 24 hours in a day school, homework, and sleep take 18 hours, which leaves students with just 6 hours to do things. Combine that with sports and after school activities, the average practice for most sports are 2 to 3 hours, which leaves the student with only 3 hours for themselves. If you add dinner into the equation which can take up to an hour ,then students only have two hours a day. Some students also have chores which can take up to an hour or even sometimes more. What can a student do with only 1 hour of time a day for their personal goals.
With the expansion in technology, children are hastily becoming more and more inactive. In the past century, kids would play outside from sunrise to sunset. Little did they realize, that playtime served
