Are School Days Too Long? With these long school days children don’t have much time to go out and be a kid. By the time children get home and finish all their homework, there really isn’t much time for sports or spending time with friends and family. Long hours of school put too much pressure on students. According to the state, students are supposed to have three and a half hours of homework a night. Students are assigned about 17 hours of homework a week. There is a total of 168 hours in a week and 64 of those hours are taken from us by school and homework. Out of the 24 hours in a day school, homework, and sleep take 18 hours, which leaves students with just 6 hours to do things. Combine that with sports and after school activities, the average practice for most sports are 2 to 3 hours, which leaves the student with only 3 hours for themselves. If you add dinner into the equation which can take up to an hour ,then students only have two hours a day. Some students also have chores which can take up to an hour or even sometimes more. What can a student do with only 1 hour of time a day for their personal goals.
After lunch there is still an hour of school before students take the buses home, but that hour is useless. After lunch students are sleepy and mentally exhausted and suffer from post-lunch syndrome. If students are tired after lunch, most of them will fall asleep in class and not learn anything. That is very bad, especially if they have a class after
To begin with, hour lunches will offer tutoring for those who need it, and extra time to work. Also, with the approval of teachers you can study and eat in a classroom. Some students can't stay after school so this is a perfect opportunity. Following, students only have thirty minutes in lunch, therefore they rush to eat. Some student do not even have enough time to finish eating. On the other hand, there will be club meetings where
Most times, after lunch, kids are tired and just want to go home. This puts them in a slacking and mindless kind of mood, and makes them not want to work. If they were permitted to have a 30 of recess time immediately following their lunch, the majority of students would look forward to this intermission every day. It not only would allow time to walk, run, or play games that provide exercises, but it also allow social time for students to interact and this is highly important to middle school students. Emotionally, enjoyable social connections and exercise time with other students can rid stress among students as well. So, if there are some students with stress or anxiety it will help to alleviate such so they are better able to focus academically when returning to class. This exercise also produces chemicals in our body to help make us feel more positive and energetic. Recess would definitely improve the mood and atmosphere of our students, by making them happier and more pleasant
Year long school is it a bad thing or good thing. It can affect a kids state of mind. It can ruin the way that they think. I for one think year long school is a good thing cause kids are able to get a better fit education for them. But it could also be a bad thing depending on how people look at it because kids won’t have a ton of free time for activities like having a job or hobbies. Shorter breaks could also cause behavioral problems if kids aren’t able to spend enough time with their families could cause some issues in the state of mind. In all honesty I for one think it’s a good thing cause it helps kids remember everything, easier to plan vacations, and can improve test scores.
School lunches are a time for the students to get a break from all classes and work. In other countries such as France, Student have a two-hour lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Johnson, 1). Having breaks would not only be allowing the student
Have you ever just wished your school day as shorter? In some schools children have longer school days. In Finland the school day is fifteen percent shorter than the school day in the United States, but their test scores are much higher. People have different points of view on length of the school day in America. Some people think that school days should be longer to improve academics for students.“The US lags behind other countries in core subjects. In 2015, American students came in 24th in reading, 25th in science, and 41st in math out of 72 countries—not the worst, but far from the best,” (pg. 30) Because the U.S.A is behind, many experts believe that students should go to school for an additional 90 minutes a day.U.S.A. Some experts
Every kid will do anything for that life, but when you get into school (American school), your dream is “killed”. On average, the typical US kid receives 50 min of homework per day while the typical Finnish kid receive their very first homework during their teens. But when Finnish students do get homework, they spend 2.8 hours per week “finnishing” it, which greatly contrast to the 6.1 hours of the American student. It is the same concept for recess, ‘Murica students get to have 27 min. Of recess, and Finnish students get 75 min (1 hr. 15 Min.) to play. It's even a law that for every 45 min. of teaching, the students need 15 min. of play. This lack of play for US students may lead to additional anxiety and other mental health
The overwhelming load situated on students by educators is not granting students to focus on their self-development. The large amounts of assignments provided to students are causing individuals to develop unhealthy habits and problems. To begin with, sleep deprivation is too common amongst adolescents, a primary factor of this is the excessive loads of homework. Due to the overwhelming amount of work, students are having anxiety attacks and other mental health issues as they are not able to cope with the stress. Furthermore, the mind-boggling homework load is causing adolescents to resort to unhealthy choices such as drug abuse. With that said homework at school should be limited as it would allow students to be able to
Students usually get home around 3:30 PM-4:00 PM. That gives each student five to six hours to finish homework, papers, projects, catch up with friends, spend time with family, participate in sports, extracurricular activities, and any other activity they wish to pursue. When school takes up such a large portion of a teenager's life, there is hardly anytime for the development of their views and values. Education is important, which has been stated numerous times, but there needs to be a balance between work and play. Social skills are just as important in the work place as is academic
School has always been seen as boring and unexciting by many students, so just the thought of making longer school days is unbelievable for some. Many students, like me, believe that longer school days wouldn’t be the best idea to improve overall student academic success. I believe that creating a longer school day would prevent students participating in sports and other out of school interests. It also would be very expensive for the school to create longer school days.
Every student loves the sound of the bell ringing at the end of the school day. Who decides how long you have to wait for the last bell? Who decides when you go back to school from your fun summer break? Why can’t we just have the bare minimum? Were about to find out.
Children develop naturally and learn things on their own. They learn how to talk, walk, eat and from watching others and experimenting themselves. Teaching children how to multiply at the age of four is not good for them because that is too much for them to handle at that young of an age. Children are not laughing and deeply engaged in what they are learning because they are not entertained by the lesson. Some say that “4 year old programs look like dumbed down 3rd grade lessons” (Sparks3). Children in schools are already stressed from sitting in school for at least 8 hours a day --5 days a week-- And have to come home to do 3 or more hours of homework! “A young girl sits at her desk, reviewing her homework assignments for the evening. English: read three chapters and write a journal response. Math: complete 30 problems, showing all work. Science: do a worksheet, front and back. French: study vocabulary for tomorrow's test. It's going to be a long night.” (Miller1). This quote describes the typical night of most students in the United States. Another quotes states “Education reform now largely equals intensive schooling: early-morning catch-up classes, after-school clubs, longer terms, shorter holidays, more testing, [and] more homework” (Benn1). Student are so worked and stressed out about school that they’re grades are being affected, students show that students who have less homework
So now schools want to keep kids even longer than the already unnecessary length. Or at least unnecessary length of each individual class. The schools have gone too far this time, planning to add over an hour to the school day. Its already long enough as it is, but now they are going to drag it out even longer. Students are human beings, and like every person they can only handle so much in one day. But doing it everyday is even more far fetched.
Extending the school day by an hour would require students to take additional courses to fill the time. At SWHS, we go from 4 classes a day to potentially 5 or 6 classes a day. With more classes, students will now have to prepare for multiple exams per day. In the worst case scenario, students might have as many as 6 tests in one day! These many tests are bound to stress students to the point of exhaustion. For example, Jess Jones might have an AP History test for first period, a geometry test for third period, and a Business Essentials test during 6th period. Jess Jones, being an honors student, will have spent 4-6 hours studying the night before and did not get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep. On test day, Jess Jones is moving sluggisly, has the
-Students work on homework until it is time for bed. -Most kids still have to prepare for the next day after they have finished their homework. -By the time students finally get into bed, accomplishing
If you ever wanted to live forever, don’t go looking for the Fountain of Youth, just go to the nearest school and you will live for the rest of eternity. School has always seemed to drag on like time had slowed and nothing is happening in the world around you. Although most school days last around eight hours on average, they can feel like years. Some teachers are miracle workers and time seems to fly, this is only in short bursts though. Many people say that all they did in school was wait for the bell to ring so that they could be free from the educational prison. From the perspective of two public schooled kids living with this problem, it is clear that public schools are not very efficient with their time. This brings about a very important conclusion, many hours are spent doing unimportant tasks every year in public schools. Although wasted time could be described as many different things, the description that we are giving it is time that people were socializing after work is completed in class, when teachers give extra time in class for the kids that didn’t get their work done by the deadline, excessive review for tests or quizes, or work that is not necessary to anything at all, for example: coloring assignments.
