Genetically Modified Foods Are Not Safe for Human Consumption! How would you feel if harmful, potentially disease causing substances enter your body every time you eat your favorite bag of chips, or when you were eating that tasty bowl of cereal in the morning? Well thanks to genetically modified foods, that is not a made up story, but a reality. Every time you eat a genetically modified food, there is an increasing chance that harmful, disease causing substances will get inside of you and infect you with a disease. These diseases can be as deadly cancer! Many countries have already started to ban genetically modified foods and the United States should be the next country to do so. This essay will explain to you why eating modified foods …show more content…
The increased use of modifying foods like this have opened the door for multiple diseases and other major health concerns to spread around in our country. One of these problems that come from modified foods that affect many Americans today is allergies. Have you ever wondered why so many different allergies are rising in our country, and how they practically are coming out of nowhere? Well you don’t have to wonder any more as the answer is right inside your fridge, genetically modified foods! In a book by Robyn Fryen she states that “almost 75% of processed foods contain neurotoxins, novel proteins, and allergens”. As more and more foods continue to get modified, we are consuming more and more allergens, causing dozens of new allergies to be produced .(LaSalle). An example of one of these allergies that millions of americans face today is gluten. Recently, the Institute for Responsible Technology released a study stating that modified foods can lead to disorders such as intestinal permeability, imbalanced gut bacteria, and impaired digestion, which are disorders that can cause a gluten allergy and other gluten-related diseases (Walia).Gluten is not the only allergy modified foods can cause as dozens more allergies can arise from the allergens in genetically modified foods and some are still being discovered. If you ever wondered where your allergy came from, genetically modified foods are the …show more content…
However, if modifying foods is supposed to reduce the rate of world hunger, then why is the world hunger rate rapidly increasing when more and more farmers are genetically modifying their food each day? The answer to that is because genetically modifying food does not increase yields and can actually be less effective at raising yields than other methods that do not use genetically modified foods. One study once showed that a sustainable non-GMO method increased yields of about 80% in a developing country, whereas methods that did not include modifying foods barely raised yields, and sometimes did not even raise yields at all! The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IIASTD) once conducted a study that contained over 400 scientists to see if genetically modified food actually increase yields. They found out that genetically modifying foods does not increase yields and does not help reduce poverty and hunger at all (Smith). If modifying food can cause disease and does not even raise yields, then why should we modify
Though every major scientific regulatory oversight body in the world has concluded that GMO foods are harmless, the public remains deeply suspicious, fearing that such food may cause cancer or allergies. Caitlin Shetterly, one of the worried public, wrote an article in Elle magazine, claiming that genetically modified foods could cause allergic reactions, and that consumers face unknown and unacceptable risks from new, yet-to-be-identified allergens that our government’s monitoring program,
Many will argue that Genetically Modified Organisms(GMOs) are not safe for human consumption, however they are almost inevitable for our everyday food consumption. Some argue that the recent increase in gluten intolerance is caused by GMO foods (Argument against). Other state that the risk to humans by GMO’s is relatively small (The GMO”). The bottom line is what people put into their bodies is a personal choice and a person should be able to easily tell if a product has been genetically modified or not.
“Eat your vegetables, they're good for you”, The words a kid never wants to hear. People scan food packages for whole grains and fibers, avoid sugar, and don’t even think about buying something with trans fats. Just when people thought they knew how to eat healthy, there's another problem: Genetically Modified Organisms. Some opponents would have you believe these ingredients are the dietary curse of the decade. How concerned should people really be though? This is one of the most debated questions around the world. Many environmental organizations protest against genetic engineering, but numerous companies continue to use it in food production. The issue of Genetically Modified foods has been investigated by many different scientists for many
There are multitudinous studies that prove biotech companies are developing genetically modified foods to prohibit allergies to mainly gluten. First and foremost, as claimed by Chen Zhang, “GMO is defined as follows by WHO (World Health Organization): “organisms (i.e plants, animals, or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination”” (Zhang). It is evident Chen Zhang stems the fact that genetic material is being manipulated from selective breeding, also known as artificial selection. Several people are allergic to gluten, and gluten is made up of rye and barley. Also, it is a main ingredient in wheat. As a compromise, biotech companies have developed gluten-free wheat. As the world-famous scholar Janet Renee explains it, “...biotech companies have received approval to develop gluten-free wheat” (Renee). There have been obvious solutions for the allergy related concerns for GM foods. However, there has been increase in specific allergies, and there has not been any solution to those specific allergens. For example, ¨Of those, only soy is commercially available in genetically modified varieties. But if a person is allergic to conventional soy, s/he will also be allergic to GM soy as it is not different compositionally” (Lim). Later on it also states, The
By the year 2012, over 70 percent of the processed foods in the U.S can be linked to genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Despite this strong dependency on the manipulation of genetic material, there are many questions concerning long-lasting impacts such food could bring. The government of the United States of America should enforce stricter restrictions on the consumption, production, and availability of food products containing genetically modified organisms. Genetically engineered foods have detrimental impacts on the environment, are linked to large, monopolizing industries, and do not reduce world hunger.
I am of two minds about genetic modification. On the one hand, I agree that these modifications can be beneficial to our nutrition because the crops could be genetically modified and enriched with nutrients and proteins. This is
Imagine going to the grocery store and seeing a seedless watermelon, but it is not the typical oval, it is square. Down the produce aisle, there are sweet, juicy strawberries; however, there is a warning label that says, “Do not consume if you have a nut allergy.” The world today is moving forward in the way that society produces our wholefoods. Genetic engineering, bioengineering, or biotechnology is the process of inserting the genetics of different plants and organisms into other plants or organisms to create new, more efficient DNA. However, is it truly beneficial to modify the world’s natural foods? The use of genetic engineering can disrupt the ecosystems that have taken billions of years to develop. Many years of research and work have gone into the subject of genetically modified foods; however, this new food trend could create or enhance food related illnesses and health problems, interfere with nature’s environs, and could even cause specific ethical problems for individuals that practice different faith. People should be aware of genetic engineering, how it works, and how it affects their lives.
There are very clearly many ways that the Party controls their society in George Orwell’s
There are several controversial issues confronting us today; from Universal Healthcare (Obama Care) to Stem Cell research, to vaccinations, to genetically engineered (GE)/genetically modified (GM) foods. However, I shall look at genetically modified foods as the controversial issue for this article. I shall look at an article from the mass media about this controversial public health issue and place emphasis on the message the document wants to convey and address any biases that may be within. In addition, I shall provide additional data or facts from another article to see if it supports or refutes the controversial message. It is my intention that this article will provide some clarity on genetically modified foods confronting us in the United States and the world over.
Last but not least, Whitman (2000) also states genetically modified crops are more economical especially to farmers in third world countries because they have higher crop yields in lesser time enabling them to satisfy the high demand for food. Genetically modified crops also take up very little land to grow improving profits for farmers. Because they grow in such short time, the demand for more food in starving countries is more easily satisfied at a lower cost.
Another crucial way in which humans are harmed from genetically modified foods is obesity. Obesity stems from an abnormal diet with high calorie-dense foods which results in above average body fat. It is associated with increased risk of disease such as cardiovascular failure and liver cancer, disability and incapacitation from excess weight on the joints and bones, and even death from complications arising from the obesity – not the obesity itself. People are consciously ignorant about the foods they eat. “Obesity is the sixth most common disease worldwide. Approximately 1.1 billion adults and 10% of children are considered obese” (Haslam). Obesity is a chronic
From the point of conception, a child’s feelings and thoughts are incredibly malleable. However, the question remains whether the environment changes our perception. This essay will delve into how perceptions are impacted by a North American lifestyle, and a lifestyle within the fictional world of The Chrysalids. Although a person has the ability to forge his or her own destiny, the environment plays a large part in shaping our perceptions everyday.
In the past few years, society has been made more aware of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Because of this, GMOs are being replaced in diets with more natural and organic options. GMOs have been researched and found to cause adverse effects on human health because of the gene splicing, or genetic alterations that are done to create them through genetic engineering. Before this issue became an issue, many people were eating processed and even healthy foods without understanding what chemicals and toxins they were actually putting into their bodies. GMOs are infused into food without awareness because one never really understands what all those unpronounceable words, label GMOs, really are. Due to recent research, it has been found that genetically modified organisms are harmful and can lead to increased risks of disease and cancer.
The human population is growing rapidly. With the growth in the human population, the demand for food is also growing at an unprecedented rate. Arguably, farms are unable to naturally provide the world’s population the food needed by natural means. This may seem like a big issue, but humans came up with an ingenious solution: genetically modified organisms, commonly known as GMO’s. Genetically modified food has been able to offset the worlds growing demand for food, and all our food problems seem to be solved. Or have they? I will use information from: Wendell Berry’s, The Pleasures of Eating, Jon Entine and JoAnna Wendel’s, 2000+ reasons Why GMO’s Are Safe to Eat, Robin Mather’s, The Threats from Genetically Modified Foods, along with references from Food Inc., to explain how genetically modified food is being used in a way that negatively affects the livestock, our health, the ecosystem, and the potential threats genetically modified crops have on our future.
Genetically modified food is a topic of intensive debate that has caused a lot of controversy over the years, basically due to a lack of knowledge about genetic engineering and large amounts of misleading information within mass media. Genetically modified foods have recently gathered more attention since environmental and health organizations have actively rejected genetically modified foods for various reasons. Genetically modified foods have the ability to resolve problem of famine and malnutrition in the world, also produce greater yields, decrease pesticides and herbicides usage, and improve the nutritional value of food. While the benefits of GMOs to our society have been widely discussed, their effect on our health is still a controversial
