When it comes to the topic of whether genetic modification are safe or unsafe for the animals, the environment and for human consumption, some of us will readily agree that they are in fact very dangerous for everyone. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how exactly they affect everyone. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are not safe for anyone, others maintain that they are not a hazard to anyone. I agree that GMOs are not safe because while doing my research I found concrete evidence that proves that they are unsafe for consumption. All production of GMOs should be discontinued immediately since they are a danger for our environment and for ourselves. When the GMOs were introduced back in 1996, doubts …show more content…
Any damage caused in the animal’s organs by the GMOs in the corn can easily cause the same damage to our organs. That is just one way that these GMOs could cause several damage to our health, there are a lot more and different ways that they can hurt us. Furthermore, there are some studies that show that GMOs are also the cause of one of the most lethal and the most feared diseases, millions of people die worldwide from cancer every year. According to Roxanne Palmer’s article “GMO Health Risks: What the scientific evidence says”. She states “A 2012 paper by Seralini and other researchers purportedly found that GM corn diet led to cancer in rats” (Palmer). In other words, what Roxanne is saying is that GMOs do in fact cause cancer. They might not affect everyone who consumes them, but they could be very bad for those who get affected. Cancer is a life threatening disease, it is treatable, but the treatment doesn’t always work for everyone, as I mentioned before cancer is the cause of death of millions of people every year. Although, GMOs have a really bad side, I have to say that there is some good to it, they have some nutritional benefits. I am of two minds about genetic modification. On the one hand, I agree that these modifications can be beneficial to our nutrition because the crops could be genetically modified and enriched with nutrients and proteins. This is
In 1994, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first GMO, Flavr Savr tomato, for sale on grocery store shelves. Uninformed, the people continued buying and consuming the “normal” grocery store products. However, as the number of GMOs in markets increased, the world noticed a higher number of cancers, food allergies, and antibiotic resistances. One reason for creating GM crops is due to the fact that big corporations gain huge profit. In “10 scientific studies proving GMOs can be harmful to human health”, Arjun Walia passionately asserts that genetically modified organisms are extremely detrimental to a person’s health. I agree with Arjun Walia’s claim because a plethora of studies show the negative effects of genetically modified organisms. The world should eliminate the creation of genetically modified organisms because the products ruin the environment, cause economic issues with
As said before, GMOs are genetically modified organisms, and can be dangerous, so experts say. They say that the GMO process causes diseases such as cancer or diabetes, and some also say that GM foods can cause allergic reactions. They are saying this because, as they have discovered, some companies have mixed protein from nuts and inserted into beans, which can be harmful
Genetically modified foods can be good and bad for humans and the economy. For example, if you do not cook an genetically modify foods it can cause us humans to become deathly ill. If the soil is not treated before the genetically modified seed is placed into the ground it can damage the soil and the earth around it.
The American Academy Of Environmental Medicine have found out, Gmos also cause organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders. They also discovered the GMOs leave material behind that leads to long terms problems
GMOs can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers. Anti-GMO organization Center for Food Safety said genetic engineering of plants and animals is, potentially. Lallanilla refers to GMO crops as “Frankenfoods.” The long-term effect of GMOs still remains unknown. They have been linked to toxic allergic reactions, sick, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals.
The human body is not designed to handle all the toxins that are put into GMO products, and as consumers, we should be informed of the potential harm we are putting into our bodies. Helke Ferrie, in his article “Evidence Grows of Harmful Effects of GMOs on Human Health” states, “…all modern human diseases are being caused by environmental toxins of our own making” (12), on the contrary, in the journal “GMOs – A solution or a Problem”, Mark Lynas claims that “… there has never been a single sustained health concern [caused by GMOs]” (132). Ferrie mentions multiple studies where GMOs have proven to “…increase the incidence of cancer, diabetes, hormone disruption, neurological, immunological and other metabolic disorders” (12). After mass amounts of research have been conducted to prove the dangers of GMOs, proof that has been gathered of the detriments genetically modified organisms bring to the human liver; researchers conclude, “… anything that upsets the liver must be… exceedingly
Imagine this, a customer sitting down at a restaurant and ordering their favorite meal. The meal consists of corn, chicken, and a soft drink. All of these foods and drinks have GMOs, but the customer does not know what the repercussions are to themselves. The consumption of GMOs is detrimental to our bodies because of the unintended effects, the immunity to antibiotics, and the harms caused by pesticides.
When it comes to the topic of whether Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO) are safe or not, most of us will readily agree that it has become an issue. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is it really safe to consume them. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are safe and improve the production of crops, others maintain that GMOs are not safe and should be eradicated. I disagree that GMOs are safe for human consumption because as a recent research has shown they can cause severe organ damage and fatal diseases. GMOs should be banned and remove from all food sources until they are proved safe for consumption.
Genetically modified crops are proven to damage human, animal, and plant life. These foods are toxic to all forms of life. Gary Null is an activist with a Ph.D. in human nutrition and public health science. He wrote the article, ’44 Reasons to Ban or Label GMOs’, he says, ‘GMO giant Monsanto [one of the largest producer of GM foods] has a history of producing highly dangerous chemical compounds including DDT, Agent Orange [remember that orange spray from the Vietnam war?], saccharin, and recombinant bovine growth hormone, all of which are known to cause significant health issues’ (Null). Null also says, ‘According to meta-analysis carried out by researchers at Caen University in France, a GMO feed diet contributes to kidney and liver toxicity in rats (Null). If a GMO diet does this to rats, what would happen to the
The good news is that most of the scientific community have found that GMOs are safe to eat. This includes the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and one of the world’s most prestigious scientific groups, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Not only are they safe to eat but in some cases, they are more nutritious. An example of this would be:
In conclusion, GMOs and pesticides are harmful and alarming to producers and consumers. They cause animals pain and harm humans when consumed. Many animals live short and painful lives, while humans now must suffer with long term diseases or damage to their bodies. Although some argue that Genetically modified produce is benefiting producers and consumers, I still argue that genetically modified organisms harm animals and
I believe that GMOs will harm human life over time. GMOs, or genetically modified organism, have many negative effects on people such as creating food allergies. In GMOs specific traits are transmitted from different species to another specie. GMOs pass traits on, such as different allergies, which can allow the spread of deadly traits among a population of humans. GMOs are produced with chemicals which can alter many different genes in a humans body. The chemicals found in GMOs turn certain alleles on due to a variation of genes. The alteration of alleles and genes can possibly create many different food allergies. Food allergies can be created by chemicals used in production of GMOs or by passing them on from other organisms during the
With all the food you have consumed, do you really believe that all the food you eat is natural and completely safe? Well research shows that foods that contains GMOs can actually cause allergic reaction to people because of all the chemicals that are inside the food. Many of the foods sold here in the United States aren’t displayed with a label showing that the product has been genetically modified, so it makes it harder for the consumer to know and understand how they could've gotten the allergic reaction. So do GMOs really sound safe to eat? Knowing that you may get an allergic reaction due to the GMOs in the food. No this is not safe at all, we should watch what GMOs can really do to us, and put an end to GMOs by creating medicine that will help us against things around our environment.
Supporters of this biotechnology believe there is no danger posed from GMO foods. They see only the favorable properties as the way of the future for agriculture and our food supply. Some of these positives might include an improved resistance to stress, such as weather or pests. Other benefits could be longer shelf life or increased yield (Weighing the GMO arguments: For, 2003). Monsanto Company, a top producer of genetically engineered seeds, states, ‘There has not been a single substantiated instance of illness or harm associated with GM crops.’ (Monsanto Company, 2011) It would be important to point out that it’s quite difficult to pinpoint a GMO as the source of an illness due to the lack of labeling on GMO products.
Genetically modified organisms, GMO’s, and their safety are becoming one of the most important topics in the agriculture industry. The fact that scientists are changing the genome of an organism makes people hesitant to accept them as being safe. GMO corn is modified by changing a gene that causes the plant to make Bt toxin. When insects eat the corn, they also eat the toxin which is deadly to the insects. According to Cookson Beecher, a writer for Food Safety News, the Bt toxin forms a crystalline structure that the insect’s gut cannot deal with after digesting it, but it has no effect on humans when we eat it. The insects then die after ingesting the toxin, and the farmer does not have to spray pesticides on the plants. Health agencies
