There are different accounts of slavery in America. I recently read Slave Girl in California and part of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Labor and slavery are central themes that are similar in both Slave Girl in California and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. However, there are very opposing themes such as liberty and government as well.
Labor is a big theme in both titles. In Slave Girl in California, Shyima was forced to work as a made. She cooked, cleaned, and wasn’t allowed to go to school. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, He was placed under the care of an older woman. The women that were to old for field labor took care of the children that were taken from their mothers. All the labor done in both titles went unpaid.
Slavery is also a major theme in both titles. Slavery is when someone is stripped of their rights and forced to work against their will under the harsh treatment of another person. Shyima was forced to do all the housework for her master and wasn’t allowed to go to school. She worked long hours and had to sleep in the garage with no light …show more content…

One of the opposing themes i found was government. In Slave Girl in California, the government was concerned when they got a call from the neighbors of Shyisma’s master saying that something suspicious was going on. The government sent people out to investigate what was going on and took Shyima into their custody. They took Shyima out of that situation because slavery isn’t legal anymore. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, the government was for slavery. The masters and overseers were not punished for treating their slaves terribly or even killing them. In some cases the law would look into a very brutal case,but eventually the case would get dropped. The difference in how the government reacted in the different time periods is
