Taking the Label Off An adult’s psychological development depends on one’s childhood experiences with adults and their capability of providing nurturance, protection, trust, and security to the developing child. Children with current and previous ties to the foster care system were found to have behavioral, emotional, and social well-being issues. The United States averages more than 400,000 children in foster care during the year. Amongst these 400,000 children, as many as 50% have developmental disorders or psychiatric diagnoses (Hutchinson). The shortfalls cited included no follow up from the initial assessment, the prolonged waiting lists, and the insufficient service availability (Hutchinson). This could be linked to the fact that evidence based practices are not being used routinely in foster care settings. Due to the consistent placement changes the concern for foster children being over-medicated with psychotropic medications was discussed in 2009 by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. According to the child behavior checklist, behavior health problems were observed at two and a half time the rate of the non-welfare community (Pecora et al.). Some of the environmental risk factors to consider is the maternal access to prenatal care, homelessness, and limited educational opportunities.
